Fabulous holiday at Butterfly Beach - a week was just not long enough
from A TripAdvisor Member
This was our first time in the Caribbean and the Butterfly Beach Hotel did not disappoint us at all. The staff were so friendly and the rooms were immaculately clean. Nothing was too much trouble and they took time out to help with any queries and directions which we needed. The location of Butterfly is brilliant for getting around and Oistins is a short walk away - the fish fry on Friday night is not to be missed. We hired a Moke to get around the island which was fantastic. We are going to return next year to Butterfly and stay for two weeks as one week was just not long enough.
well recomended

A great holiday

We were very impressed with the Butterfly Beach Hotel. From the moment of our arrival, when we were greeted with a long cool drink, to our reluctant departure, everyone in the hotel did their very best to help us. At all times they were attentive and very friendly. The room was spacious and clean (we paid for a room with an ocean view- well worth it) and the decoration was good with a new air conditioning unit which worked very well. Outside the terraces, pool and 3 open air jacuzzis were regularly cleaned to an extremely high standard. We quickly discovered the small convenience store opposite the hotel- only a small range of items but Julie and Alan were extremely friendly and helped advise us of things to do on the island. Our first trip was to Oistins using the local bus service (anywhere for a flat fare of 1.5 Barbados dollars (around £0.30): you need the right money). The fish market sells some of the best really fresh fish you have ever tasted including flying fish, "dolphin" (no, not the real dolphin), king fish, red snapper etc. During our holiday we bought a variety of fresh fish and cooked it in our room with recipes suggested by the locals. However at night they cook fish for you at the fish market and Friday nights are a big event with music etc. As a result we only used the restaurant in the hotel once during our stay. Getting to Bridgetown, the capital, was easy using the buses although the morning rush hours before 09:00 and after 17:00 are best avoided as the roads become very congested. For part of the week we hired a car and went inland and to the East coast. Well worth it with some amazing scenery. There was really so much to see and do. However we really enjoyed the "Roots and Rhythm" cabaret and meal although it was not cheap. We will certainly return to Barbados and to the Butterfly Beach. The flights by Virgin were excellent and uncrowded.
Ideal Place To Explore Barbados

We have just returned from an 8 day holiday at the Butterfly Beach Hotel in Barbados with British Airways & BA Holidays I spent a lot of hours trying to decide between the Silver Sands Hotel and the Butterfly beach hotel and we were thankful that we chose the Butterfly Beach The hotel is only 10 minutes drive from the airport and is located on the main road and the restaurant / sun deck are right on the waters edge. Given that it is self catering I was apprehensive about the quality of the rooms and we managed to upgrade our initial room to an ocean view which was worth the extra £100 for the trip. The rooms a very functional and cleaned daily with fresh towels provided and the beds made. They had a ceiling fan and a good air conditioning unit which was great for the really hot days/ nights we experienced. Overall the rooms were excellent and surpassed my initial fears before booking but they are basic self catering with a fridge, a four ring hob, toaster, kettle and a few pans and cutlery - good for doing the basics. It did have a TV and phone which were an added bonus I was not expecting. The starfish restaurant has a nice selection of food and is reasonably priced and the staff were very good. We only ate at the hotel a couple of times but could not fault the food or service. The location is great for exploring the island and I would recommend hiring a car as it is very easy to get around the island and explore the other beaches and attractions. The beach itself at the hotel was not great for snorkelling due to the waves and the wind but it was great for trying out windsurfing at the Mistral club right next door. If you want to have clear water to see the marine life then you are better driving to some of the public beaches further up the west coast. We did take a trip to the Silver Sands hotel and found that it was quite a way from the main centre and the sea was exceptionally rough for swimming but ideal for surfing and windsurfing. In comparison the Butterfly Beach is 5 minutes drive to St Lawrence Gap and 20 minutes to Bridge town and within walking distance of a super market and Oistens town centre. Overall I would have no problem recommending the Butterfly Beach Hotel and given the low cost I think it was excellent value for money, very clean, central and near some great beaches. There is good security at the hotel and on the island and we never felt unsafe or nervous. A great experience and some great memories!! Compliments to the managers and staff at the hotel and to BA who always seem to do a great job!
!!!FANTASTIC!! We had the time of our lives!

Me and my boyfriend first started fantasising about going to barbados and how great it would be, then we started looking at the prises and this was definately the best. So we thought why not lets do it. When we got there we were greated by the nice staff and given our keys to our room. The room was lovely but as soon as we saw the view from the top floor and it was amazing it was unreal we couldnt believe we was there. We took a few trips including St Lawrence Gap were you can eat, dance and go on the georgeous beach during the day, we also went on a submarine, on a luxury catamaran cruise which was surprisingly cheap with food on board and then snorkling with the turtles. And finally a bajan roots and rythms show. !!!!!Overall the holiday was out of this world!!!!!! Any question dont hesitate to contact me vaughsar@aol.com
10 days not enough!

We stayed at the Butterfly in March and had a fantastic time. Do not expect a 5* resort as this is basically a self catering hotel. We had a sea view room 314 in the new block that came equipped with a huge bed, bath, shower and kitchenette and brand new satellite TV. As stated in previous reviews the cleanliness of the accomodation is superb. The hotel has a swimming pool (kept very clean) jacuzzi's (good for sipping a pina colada or rum punch or two at happy hour 5-6) and a good standard bar/restaurant (the happy starfish.) If you don't fancy venturing out some evenings you can either socialise around the bar on bbq night or join in when they have a kareoke night. (we gave this a miss as the standard of vocal abilities among some guests was not too pleasing on the ears. We rented a car (a must) from a company that was arranged through reception. It turned out to be a very good deal (about $80 barbados. £22 a day. Best part was driving through the sandy lane residential complex and feeding the green monkeys that habitat the area. You can also find many secluded beaches to laze away the days. Go to Bathsheba and have lunch at the roundhouse on the east coast. If you don't rent a car you can flag down a white minibus (ZR) that will toot you as you walk a long for $1.50 anywhere. Might have to cram in with the locals and listen to the latest Barbados No1's but this is all part of the experience. If you haven't been to the island before you will be surprised at how friendly the locals are. This is probably due to the stress free laid back nature of the island. Get over to the west coast for the calm sea, treat yourself to dinner at the Little Arches Hotel {about 5 min journey from Butterfly) and don't miss the Oistins Friday night fish Fry.And make sure you take a catamaran cruise and snorkel with the turtles. Going back in Dec to stay on the west coast But if this is your first visit start off at the butterfly and get an ocean view room and you won't go far wrong. For the night life get over to St lawrence Gap about 10 min away. Loved It
Great Value

Fantastic value self catering appartment. We had a sea view room, which was lovely, overlooking the decked jacuzzi and sunbathing area as well as the ocean. The room was a good size and was cleaned everyday by the friendly staff. Short distance to St Lawrence gap (by taxi/bus) and easy to get into Bridgetown or other main locations. Not 5* luxury, but definitely excellent value and would recommend to anyone looking for a cheapish caribbean holiday.
Super little hotel

We had two weeks at Butterfly Beach in February 2006, a lovely little hotel, super staff, the rooms are excellent and the food in the restaurant unbeatable. If I returned to Barbados I would certainly stay here again. ++
Fab Holiday!

We just returned from a 10 night stay at Butterfly Beach. This hotel is in a great location as it is literally minutes from all the local attractions such as Oistins and St. Lawrence Gap. The rooms were clean and staff very friendly, although a self-catering holiday we thoroughly enjoyed this hotel. I mostly enjoyed sitting on my balcony in the evenings with a drink, you can find a candle in your cupboard in the kitchenette! The air conditioning is a gift from heaven as the nights can be a little hot and sticky, or if it's that too cold for you, just just use the ceiling fan above the bed. The beaches are stunning and can be easily accessed via the gates. The kitchenettes are fully equipped with everything you need with a good size fridge. This was a great hotel and a fantastic holiday
good value hotel

Stayed at Butterfly Hotel 25th Feb 06 for 1 week and really enjoyed it. Lucky to get 1 of the best rooms (421) at back of hotel with great views across the bay (rooms at the front overlook a busy road which could be noisy at times). Room spacious, a/c, massive bed, maid kept spotlessly clean. All staff very friendly and helpful. Being fussy you could say the food was not very exciting but you are half way between Oistins and St Lawrence gap where you can eat well so not a big deal. Enjoy!
