San Zulian Reviews

Nov 2002, Mrs L Cavendish

Terrific location just off St Marks Square - we could see the top of the Campanile. Area is very upmarket and safe - the shop next door is Cartier! Rooms, although small, were beautifully decorated with Murano glass chandeliers. Breakfast was served in the room at no extra... more

Expensive but worth it, spacious and great location
We stayed here for 5 nights for a long holiday weekend May 4-9 2005. I called 30+ hotels in Venice and they were all full. I was getting desperate so I finally called Hotel Zulian which was really out of our budget. They had rooms available. I found a discount through the web and booked online for 205 euros/night instead of 236. Hotels must be judged by the standards of the cities they're in. My wife kept saying it was too expenisve, but all hotels in Venice are expensive in high season. The only other hotel we could find was 150 euros/night and it was very far from the center. We found the hotel staff to be indifferent, not really overly friendly. One older man was not very nice. But if you read other reviews that's just how it is in Venice. Since I had low expectations I wasn't disappointed. The hotel room we had was very nice (again, by Venice standards). The bathroom was huge. When I read reviews of other hotels where people could turn on the shower without getting out of bed, I think our hotel room was pretty big. The breakfast was served in the room which I really enjoyed. It was delicious, containing awesome bread, croissants, jelly, honey, toast, coffee & tea and something they called orange juice but I am sure it was fruit punch (maybe blood oranges I don't know, they were very sweet). We declined the free tour to Murano and went on our own because we wanted to spend the entire day there. I don't know how their tour was but I imagine it had some pressure to buy glass which is really expensive. The hotel is located just a couple minutes from Pl. San Marco which was great because we could stop by the room whenever we wanted to use the bathroom, get a coat, freshen up, etc. It was also about 5-10 minutes from Rialto depending on if you stopped to take pictures and/or shop. The Gondola rides have really increased. My lonely planet said 62 euros for 50 minutes, well we searched all over and bargained for 70 euros for 30 minutes. Yes it's a ripoff but we enjoyed it and hey you're only in Venice once. Overall I highly recommend this hotel if you can afford the price. You won't be disappointed. Note that in low season the price of our room was just 70 euros which would be a good price.
Fantastic little hotel
We stayed at the San Zulian for four days in July 2004 and it could not be faulted. Our spacious room was always clean, tidy and cool; the staff were helpful; and the location (just a few metres from St Mark's Square and Rialto Bridge) was amazing. I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be going back sometime soon.
The Great San Zulian
We stayed at the San Zulian for Valentines Day and Carnivale last February 2004 and I have to give them a good review after reading the bad press they got from the couple from Austrailia. The price is very reasonable. The rooms are small but cozy with newly renovated and up to date bathrooms and showers, hot warmers so your towel is always dry and warm. Very Clean. Our room was nice and quiet, windows have shutters to let in or shut out the church bells and sounds of the city. Location is PERFECT, very close to St. Marks Square and prime shopping opportunities. Food is available in every direction, delicious and fresh, home made pannini's right accross the street and the best lasagna (Del Vecchio Portal) and local wine just a few blocks away. Staff was friendly and VERY helpful, setting up a FREE boat cruise to the island of Murano for a FREE glass exhibit. Breakfast was simple but delicious, FRESH coffee and pastries, all you need for a morning start. Wear comfortable shoes because you will be doing alot of walking wherever you go. Since the euro has taken over the american dollar was not as strong as it was the last time I was there in 6/2000 so everything is more expensive. The gondola ride is expensive but WORTH it if you traveled the world to come to this historic and beautiful city. Great way to see the city. We recommend the San Zulian highly to everyone and would definitely stay there again.
Lovely Ambiance
Venice was everything we ever dreamed of and more, right down to the lovely ambiance of this hotel. The Concierge staff, especially Joseph, showed nothing but class and was always there to address our needs or lend some friendly advice. Some might say the rooms are small, I would call them cozy and quaint. The Continental breakfast was served in our room every morning at the requested time, always by a cheerful staff member. The location is steps away from San Marco Square which seems to be the heart of Venice. We will, undoubtedly, stay here again.
A sweet stay in Venice
We stayed here in early July upon the recommendation of a friend. From the moment we arrived to our departure 4 days later, we were treated to the best of Venetian hospitality. The hotel is the epitome of simple elegance. The staff are gracious and go to great lengths to assist a guest with the most minor query. The breakfast is good, served with sunny, Venetian style. Located near the cathedral of San Zulian, the hourly chimes are a charming addition to the whole gestalt. Rooms were clean, comfortable, sunny and air conditioned! Very nice bathrooms, and responsive housekeeping. We highly recommend this hotel.
Awful - Avoid this hotel
This hotel is terrible. The rooms are tiny, the halls stink of rising damp and the staff are rude, unhelpful and dishonest (e.g. tried to convince us to share a Gondala ride with another couple - at a price well above normal "market"). The breakfast offering is also very poor/limited. Would definitely recommend trying somewhere else
Perfect Hotel to be in venice
Excellent treat by all the personnel of the hotel, the room was very good, the location was amazing. It was a very good experience to be stay on that hotel, highly recommended to everyone.
Great Little Place
Great little place just off San Marco square. Lobby is clean, modern and inviting. Staff was very pleasant. Stayed in the top 'loft-like' room, which comes with a great little breakfast nook that provides a great view over the city. Ask for the room #304- you wont be disappointed.
Great location
Ideally situated for all main attractions and boat service from airport. Rooms small but adequate, staff friendly and helpful.
Jewel of Venice
very close to st mark's, with an accommodating staff, lovely rooms and near a canal when you need a water taxi
