Great hotel
A group of 10 of us booked this hotel over a year ago and thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay. We only got back this morning ! From previous reports, I have to agree that there were a lot of germans at the hotel, but this didn't effect our holiday at all. The reception was lavish, staff were friendly and although they spoke better german than english, they communicated with us very well. Rooms were very clean with a maid service every day, which we didn't expect. Swimming pools were very clean and as Sunrise Beach have just taken over the next door Nautilus you could use their pool and snack bar. The beach looked man made and was quite rocky, if you had kids this could be a problem, but we didn't have any children-only oaps who could negotiate the rocks with no problem !! Food was varied every day, with exceptional choice for everyone, no runny beans ! The resort itself was very quiet, but in 10 years it won't be, with a load of developments being built. We will return to this hotel sometime in the future, I would recommend it to anyone. Especially with the weather being around 85 every day. The onlt down point was the lack of staff on bar duty in early evening, that is if you want anyhting different from the help yourself beer pump !
smashing hotel
I booked this hotel for a party of 18 people, only looking at the reviews after i had booked. After reading about the hotel being over run with germans, staff not speaking english, having to get up early for sunbeds, bad food ect, ect, you can imagine my concern. we went on 21st August 2004 and the hotel was mainly english guests rooms was great, food was great, staff could speak english, and you could get a sun bed and any time of day, hotel had lovely views over the bay, the only bad thing was the entainment their wasnt anything for teenagers, ours sat on the beach with their music most nights, but made lots of friends and made the best of it. the entainments team was very friendly. we mainly went down to the beach bar where there was live music most nights. all in all we had a great holiday in a lovely hotel which i would recommend if you didnt have teenagers.
costa calma pros and cons of the hotel
Just a added comment about the hotel. Plus points are the pool is really clean but the pool which is heated is salty water. The second large pool isn't heated and so is quite cold. At dinner times the selection is astonishing ranging from salads and cheeses to beef and fish, also they do chicken, pork, loads of potatoes with different ingredients mixed with them. Breakfast time is also gud, they do everything avaliable including sasuages, bacon, eggs, toast, beans, mushrooms, fried bread, cheeses, crackers all sorts. But however their are a few cons with the hotel, all the hotel staff speak fluent german and spanish, and a bit of english, also luchtimes isn't very good for food becuase its just a tiny buffet like hotdogs and burgers and cakes, and they only do them in 30 minute periods like 2.30 burgers, 3.00 cakes that sort of thing, also the hotel is mainly of germans who eat a rather lot and some of them think their better than you jus becuase their german and they own most of the hotel in terms of population. The beach on the hotel is extremly rocky, also the kids club for english kids is awful and the entertainment at night is in german and is appaling also the germans reserve sunbeds at 5 in the morning and so you will have no umbrella sunbed then you will suffer the sun all day and get burnt. Overall the hotel is good but there are a lot of germans!
STAY AWAY!!
Just a horrible place, rotten buffet food, boring entertainment for teenagers, 90% German speaking, linens not changed for 3 nights, cheap quality beverages. A/C hardly worked. Had to show the manager the moldy and rotten food. Definitly not a 4 star hotel. Clientele obviously not well travelled or requiring the quality they are paying for. With the help of my Madrid travel agency, we got changed to a nice hotel called Elba Sara at Caleta up the coast for the next 5 nights. What a relief, even if I had to pay my own transport to get there.
What an absolutely fantastic holiday
We have just returned, literally, from what I can only say, has been one of the best holidays we have ever taken. After reading some of the previous reviews, I must admit I was very wary about having our holiday at this resort/hotel. Our very first impression was "brilliant" as we entered the reception/foyer. It was beautiful, clean hotel. The staff were very friendly, from the Reception Staff, the Chambermaids, Cleaning Staff and those working in the restaurant/bars. Those who could not speak a word of English would smile and make you feel welcome. Most of the guests were very friendly. We met some lovely German guests, who didn't really speak much English and we did'nt speak much German but somehow or another we made each other laugh and crossed the "language barrier". The food was wonderful. There was so much selection, from salads, rice and pastas thru to fish, chicken, pork, beef. There was alot of choices for desserts as well. We could not find fault at all. All drinks were readily available, from teas, coffees, soft drinks thru to beers and spirits. Most of these you just helped yourself too as little or as often as you liked. The only small minus point to this brilliant holiday was the Entertainment in the Hotel. The "Animation Team" did try, but it showed how the "foreign" sense of humour differs from the English. All the children seemed to enjoy theirselves. We found that the Beach Bar had better entertainment. It was really a waste of time trying to watch the telly, the only Channels we could understand was the News Channel and Euro Sport, all the other channels were in German or Spanish. But "hey" who goes on holiday to watch telly! There is a small supermarket close to the hotel and a small shopping complex within a 5-10 minute walk. The beach is lovely and clean. You can watch small fish thru the clear sea. We can definately recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to have a "brilliant, relaxing holiday in beautiful surroundings".
What an amazing hotel
Well what can i say. I just had t write a note because this place was out of this world. Me and my girlfriend went all inclusive for 1 week. The food was amazing, the drink measures were very large and the staff so nice. The room was spotless and was cleaned every day. the Bar staff were very very goodf and by the end of the week did not even need to ask what we were drinking. We will be coming back to this hotel again in the very near future.
Fantastic holiday
i have just come back from costa calma beach hotel and was fantastic place to stay!!. the hotel was spotlessly clean, the food was out of this world weather was good too. ok there is a quite a few germans there but they don't bite talk to them like i did they are very friendly. i will be going back there it was marvelous!!!!.
Pleasantly suprised after reading the negative reveiws!
I came back early hours of this morning (09-06-04). I went with my fiance and my son (8). After reading the reveiws on here, I was very worried about my holiday. First impression - Fantastic! Receptionists were very friendly, as were all the staff. The hotel rooms are lovely. Bright, clean and large. Yes, there were Germans - as there are on EVERY holiday!! None of them were rude, none pushed in front of me!! Sunbeds were easy to get, there are SO many. We went to the pool as late as midday, and got our usual sunbed. There were always plenty of spares around us too! There are three pools two heated. Also a pool in the hotel to the side, which was available to us to. The beach is literally 30 seconds away from the pool and is beautiful. the sand is white, and the sea is so clear and blue. It is warm too. We even saw fish swimming! There was always the opportunity to get something to eat or drink, with ice cream available all day too. The food was great, and that is from someone who is usually quite fussy about the food in all-inclusive hotels! There was Chicken, beef, turkey, pork, fish etc plenty of veg and salad and rolls! Breakfast was lovely, I usually stay away from the beans, as one person said in there reveiw that they do appear watered down. But the ones I had weren't, they were lovely, they were exactly the same as a very well known English brand! there are two sittings for tea, where you have your own table number. 6.00 - 7.30 or 8.00 - 9.30. You will be allocated a sitting for your whole stay, but you can swap them around if it's too early, or late. Entertainment was great, and all in English. We had Musicals, a parrot show, a fantastic magician, Grease etc. There was also Bingo 1 Euro per card (They give you sticks to push through, but it is hard so take a pen!!) The weather had been great the week before we went, but it was quite cloudy while we were there so along with the winds, it was chilly at times! The breeze really helps with the tan though as you don't realise how hot you are getting, so wear plenty of sun screen, it is easy to get burnt! At the end of our stay we had to leave the room at 11am. We were given a courtesy room at a time convenient to ourselves to shower and change. This was ideal as our room was not available to keep on for the rest of the day.
A great two week holiday
Having just returned from two weeks at this hotel I can honestly say it was excellent. Upon our arrival the room I was given was not suitable as I had my seventeen month old son with us and we were given a terrace on the ground floor. I went to reception to request a different room and without hesitation I was given a one room apartment. At reception you can also hire towels for ten euros which is refundable if I had known this before hand I would not have taken any towels. The rooms are comfortably furnished and cleaned daily. The all inclusive option was brilliant there was food available throughout the day which was great for us as my daughter could help herself to drinks, food and ice cream whenever she wanted. The food was of a very high standard and the service at all the bars and restaurant was excellent. At the start of the two weeks a new entertainment team had taken over who have obviously started to make improvements to the programme. The team were very friendly and made every effort to keep everybody happy. The kids club is also run by the entertainment team and is open for three hours every day(fab!!!!). At the end of the day the entertainment is what you make of it. Different people from different countries have different ideas about entertainment. The hotel is has a high proportion of German people staying there many of whom do not understand the concept of queing!!! The pool areas are very large and there is a large quantity of sunbeds available. The childrens pool was heated but sitting around it at times felt like a wind tunnel. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Some improvements needed
Arrived on 28/4/04 at 8.45pm. The room was comfortable with a balcony and air con. The room cards that are issued on arrival are also used in a slot in the wall just inside the door. This will control all the electrics in the room including the air con. If you remove it when you go out the air con will not work. We left one card in the slot and kept one on us, although the chambermaid use to remove it when cleaning??? The brochure states satellite TV. There were only about 12 channels available, all in German apart from Eurosport, a travel channel and an edited version of Sky News! The choice and quality of food varied quite a lot. For the first couple of days it was ok but then went downhill until the last day, especially at lunch. The salads were good but the meats were always a sort of German ham and the cheeses were also German in type - never any chicken or roast beef. The breakfasts were ok if you like streaky bacon and undercooked sausages together with watered down baked beans (yes literally watered down!). The scrambled eggs were also dodgy but the fried ones were fine. The entertainment is a joke and not a funny one. The team seems to consist of about half a dozen German people who haven't the first idea about putting an entertainments programme together. The only time there was any dance music was on the day we came home. it was due to start at 9.30pm.......until about 11pm. The rest was just bingo and some games involving the audience - but it was mostly in German. The daytime entertainment wasn't any better with keep fit in or by the pool, darts or french boules. One day the entertainment team were given a rest day. but I don't think anyone noticed. A Butlin's Redcoat team would leave this bunch standing! Maybe we had been spoilt as our previous holiday was on an Airtours Sun Cruise where the food was five star and the entertainment rivalled anything in London's West End. On to positive things. The service at reception and in the restaurant and bars was friendly and efficient - no problems there at all. The pools and gardens were very good and well tended. The hotel seemed fairly busy, but we had no problem getting sun beds regardless of the time of day. There is a gate onto the sand. The beach is then easily reached by walking over a bed of cobble stones. After a further few hundred yards you need to negotiate some larger rocks to continue onto the next much longer expanse of sand. this presents no problem of you go there after lunch when the tide is out. The quality of the sand and water is excellent. Costa Calma itself is a quiet resort, pretty in places but with nowhere to really go in the evenings. There are some shops and supermarkets available during the day. Overall, we would probably return to Costa Calma but at a diferrent hotel which would hopefully provide consistently better food and entertainment. Bear in mind that the guests at the resort and this hotel are about 80 - 90% German and you will feel in a minority. We found however that none of them speak Spanish - we on the other hand made every effort to speak our very limited Spanish whenever we could and the locals really appreciated it - even if some of them say Danke Schon in reply - until they realise that you are British! All very confusing but well meaning.
