Sunrise Costa Calma Beach Resort Reviews
" Great Holiday with a few gripes! "
Submitted By: BigScotsGuyBe aware of a couple of disappointments though. The bar service although very good does rely on local alcohol brands. I am no drinker, and will get a hangover from a couple of bottles of Magners, so i decided to try out a theory before leaving. I had four Amorettos, two whiskies, a couple of gins, a spakiling wine and a brandy. Enough to blow my head off. Still didn't get drunk at all. So my theory is that these local brands are nothing more than flavouring.
Also, although there are not a lot of shops in the resort, the prices are ridiculous thanks to the lousy exchange rate. Four batteries for my camera.....12 Euro. (Stay away from the little rip off camera store in the nearby shopping centre). Also sanitary towels at 7 Euros.....so watch out! and take plenty of supplies.
Some suggestions....take a couple of bungee cords with you as the towels and mats can get blown away really easily. Its not called the Windy Island for nothing. We took a look at the more expensive Crystal Beach hotel which is lovely inside but does get a lot more wind. The Costa Calma Beach is far better and offers a variety of places to catch the sun, from small beaches to shaded patios and beautiful pools.
All very clean and well manintained, the gardens are beautiful and the hotel offers many great places for photos. We used the little beach to the front near to the Tiki bar, which is very useful. You can help yourself to the beer on tap, coffee (if you want tea take your own bags......you'll thank me really!)
If you are on the 15 Kilo limit take advantage of the towel hire. For a 20 Euro deposit it will save you having to take one in your case.
The in-room safe is useful but expensive it worked out over 40 Euro for the 2 weeks, but it does put your mind at ease.
Look out for the Italian entertainment team especially Paulo, if you can work out what he gets paid to do put your answers on a postcard to.....I reckon they must be related to the owner or something?
The 11 O'Clock cut off is a little strange though. The lights go up, the crowds run off to bed, and the bar closes. It's really strange getting packed off to bed earlier than i do at home?
All in all a good hotel with some strange quirks.

" Fantastic Hotel "
Submitted By: sunraychildWe were allocated ground floor rooms as we had a buggy which was either a coincidence or very considerate! The hotel was spectacular and very clean. The pools were beatiful. Entertainment at night was not as bad as I expected. Very good for children.
Food was excellent even for us very fussy eaters.
Breakfast - was pretty much the same every day. Lots of breads and toast, butter and jams. Full English breakfast of bacon, sausages, beans, scrambled egg, fried egg, tomatoes, fried bread. Continental - croissants, ham, salami, cheese, pancakes. Always lots of fruit, cereal, milk, juices and large bowls of different yoghurts.
Lunch and Tea - Always breads and butters, crackers, cheese, various cold meats, fruits and soup.
Cooked food - fish meat, always chips, pizza, pasta, various spanish style food, spaghetti, potatos loads, vegetables, alsortsof different things to try, and loads and loads.
Salad bowls each full seperately of lettuce, carrot, pickled onions, onion, cheese, beetroot, cucumber etc etc.
Also bowls of mixed dressed salads that were delicious, full of allsorts sometimes meat or tuna in them or pasta.
Always lots of fruit, variety of cakes and desserts, lots of ice cream and sauces , so much.
Anyone that complains about the food on these reviews must be mad, its unbelievable. I could not believe that my fussy family piled their plates so high.
On the bad side we have each put a stone on !
The only bad points about the holiday ...
Germans. 95% guests are german. However those that were English all befriended each other.
The germans charge around at dinner time not looking where they are going, frantic to get their food first. They also go mad on the dance floor doing stupid dancing taking it very seriously. My todler got trampled on twice. so watch out for that. Also could not buy an English newspaper, only German.
Expensive. If you dont go all inclusive, take a lot of spending money. We paid £3.50 for a large bag of crisps. The supermarkets and the airport are such a rip off. so it might be wise to pack a few packets of chocolate hob nobs and crisps!
Very little to do outside the hotel - very few shops and bars.
night time weather - gets a bit chilly take cardigans.
Dinner - Dinner require men to wear full length or nearly full length trousers or they will turn you away. They have a set time slot when you can eat in the evening. you are given either 6 to 7-30 or 8 to 9.30. This can be a bit of a pain in the bottom if the times dont suit you.
All in all a fantastic holiday. would def go again, same hotel. Although would be nice if they built a few more shops and bars.
Advice: Very little to do, but wonderful weather for a chill out holiday.
Activities: beautiful beach, chipmonks and lizards everywhere.
Good for: Beach

Submitted By: Ms Am MillarOn arrival at the hotel reception area seemed ok although a little dated. We got our keys then the horror story began. As we went through the doors just past reception we were greated in my view nothing short of a poorly managed tenament block. The stairways were filthy, lift damaged by vandals an altogether scary place for anyone returning to there room alone at night.
The room was not a disappointment as we had prepared ourselves for the worst. Old furniture, dirty bedding, bathroom covered in mould. The veranda door was damaged therefore would have been insecure. We then headed to reception which was full of people who had arrived around the same time as us asking for other rooms. Keys were being handed out swiftly. Needless to say we waited our turn for keys, then headed for our new room with the hope that it will get better. We were wrong, the new room was in the same state as previously.
We decided we would rather return home than stay in that horrible hotel.
Contacted Thomas Cook Rep who moved us to a nicer 4 star hotel in Jandia. We had to pay the difference in price around 300 euros from one apparantly 4 star hotel to another 4 star hotel????
The Rep discussed our experience and admitted there was a standards issue, said we should fill out a complaints form and we should be compensated. Did what she said, then came Thomas Cook's reply no standards issue and Rep had confirmed the hotel was of a good standard. Rubbish!!!
You have read the good reviews, then mine, do you want to take the chance with your hard earned money?

Submitted By: Ms S CroweThey were unhelpful when requesting a new room - the reception staff were almost 'put out' at any requests. The Bar staff and restaurant staff however, were very pleasant. Food was awful, and all of us were sick for some point during the stay! It is mostly fish, with a suace, or cold meats and chips.
There are not enough sunbeds in the main season - and the majority are claimed with towels at 6am! Umbrellas are even more scarce, which was annoying as we have young children. The pool area never seemed to be cleaned, and I had to pick fag butts of my sons foot. These fag ends were there for days.
We had to put towels down covering the bottom of the hotel door on both sides of the room to prevent the scores of cockroaches. One couple had them in their pillow case!! The bathroom had lost all the seals around the toilet & the bath, & therefore proividing a welcome route for the cockroaches.
The hotel is not a huge disaster, but our complaint is that we paid for and expected a 4 star standard hotel - this was nto certainly the case. We would never go back.

Submitted By: Mr R KingFirst the few bad bits.... None of the rooms had a double-bed, although we quickly improvised one from the two single ones with no problem. We had to pay for a card to operate the safe in the room, which I thought was a bit cheeky. Other than that it's hard to fault the hotel. The Costa Calma resort itself was rather dated and tacky with very little in the way of bars and restaruants, so we simply stayed in the hotel.
The hotel itself was extremely good. The staff were excellent and friendly and the buildings were well maintained and clean. The maid visited our room every day and did a great job. The pools were clean and big enough for everyone and surrounded by well looked after grounds and plenty of sun loungers.
The evening entertainment was middle-of-the-road. Nothing to write home about.
The food and resteraunt were to a very high standard and it's almost impossible to fault. There was a massive and varied selection of different foods each night, with a theme (American, Italian, etc) most days. From first thing in the morning until late at night we always managed to find food being served in one of the beach bars or restaurant.
We had a great week in the hotel and would go back.

There is not much outside hotel but that doesn't matter. The majority of guests are german but they are very friendly and well mannered. We would certainly go back again
Would recommend a visit to Oasis Park La Lajita. It is a zoo not too far away. A taxi from the hotel to this costs about 8 - 10 euros. well worth a visit.

Submitted By: Mrs J HamiltonWe went on an all inclusive basis - there was everything in the morning that you would normally expect i.e. full breakfasts, fruits, cereals, croissants, pancakes, waffles etc etc - eat as much as you want. We only had lunch in the restaurant once but it was good and a huge selection. The bars out at the pools also provide lunches which is where we ate - there were a few selection of main meals, then salads, chips, burgers, hot dogs. Self service beer taps around the place aswell as self service juice - although you can ask for drinks at the bar if you prefer - you have to wear a wrist band when you are on the AI programme. There were plenty of sun loungers at the pool areas - beach towels are provided by the hotel - you leave a 20 euro deposit and then this is returned to you when you return the towels on your departure. Dinner in the restaurant is either at 6pm or 8pm - you are told what time you have to go at. Entertainment on most nights which starts at 9.30pm - entertainment was varied, musicals, dancing, bingo - provided by in house entertainment team. I would go back to the Sunrise Costa Calma Hotel for a relaxing week - but if you are looking to get out and about the resort there isn't that much round about apart from more hotels, a couple of small shopping centres and a small market on a Sunday.

Submitted By: Mr J HowarthThere are cracks in render and flaking paint all around the complex and some shabby furniture in the seating area just off reception. This aside, the staff could not have been more helpful and all had a quick smile and good attitude. The room we were allocated had a sea view and balcony and was very well cleaned and maintained. We took our 9 year old daughter and 3 year old son, who both loved the pools and beaches. Sun loungers were always available.
Reception take a 7% cut when cashing Travellers Cheques.
Be warned ! The complex is 95 % German. In general they were rude and arrogant.
For self- catering travellers, the choice of bars and restaurants in the area is disappointing and very basic. We tried the hotel restaurant and choice is limited; all rice, pasta salads, lots of tinned veg, very little meat and fish! (The chef must be on a tight budget).
The real plus point of this hotel is the location right next to the beach. Watch out for the cliff edge by the volleyball area, dangerous for kids!
We went on the Catamaran trip which was superb, and well worth a change from the beach or pool. Saw dolphins. Had great food and plentiful drink, and the crew are a great bunch. A top day.
If the local bars and restaurants were better I would return here, no question.
To summarise, Hotel complex good. Location great. Holiday very much enjoyed.

Submitted By: Mrs P AndersonAlthough this hotel was a bit isolated it had everything one could wish for, sun beds with nice mattresses which were very comfortable and there were plenty of them.
We went all inclusive and came home without spending any money only on a newspaper here and there, drinks were on tap all day up to 11pm. plus cakes and sandwiches during the afternoon at different times. There are one or two little shops along the road and a bus can take you to Jandia where there are a few more shops but a morning there was enough it is only a small resort.
On leaving the airport it was like travelling on the moon with nothing only mountains and sand until we reached the resort, which is very small and looked as though it had been picked up and just put there, very weird feeling. We would go back as we found the hotel peaceful and a total rest, we were not tempted to walk round shops so settled down and enjoyed the peace and quiet. Evenings were good with entertainment every night.
Cannot fault this hotel.

Submitted By: Mrs L TaylorThere were plenty of loungers available around the pool every day, although we had to stay around the childrens pool as we had our 5yr old with us. Yes, we all know the Germans love this island, probably as much as we do, but if you integrate with everyone instead of being a "Brit abroad" then you may find that they are actually very nice people and just like us. Nudists are a bit annoying on the beach though, we have now learned how to dodge them!
The hotel was spotless, rooms cleaned very well, the staff were all lovely and helpful and the grounds truly beautiful. The food was plentiful, well varied and just fantastic as well as constantly available.
I am now trying to book for my 3rd trip there for next year as it is perfect for us for a quiet break away from our hectic lives and perfect for our 5yr old, she loved the pool, beach and disco... happy kids, happy holiday!
Some Brits should STOP WHINGING and when in Rome.......

Submitted By: Mr D SouthallThe hotel offers fantastic food which is especially good for those who decide to go all inclusive.
Those of which are self catered, there is a small selection of nice restaurants around - but many of these are up to a mile away.
Also please note that there is a nudist resort located down the beach, which did not appear to be signposted! so if you blush easily, you might not want to stroll down!!!
This is a great place, but very quiet and not the place for people who want to have a lively time (although there are a couple of clubs).

Submitted By: Miss C HodgsonThe room was spotless; the food was good and all the staff extremely helpful.
When we first arrived the hotel was 80% German but all spoke English and were all lovely.
I would definitely recommend going to this hotel, and would definitely return! I went with my partner and wanted a quiet peaceful holiday and this is exactly what we got.

Talking to a very nice English couple we found out that there were fridges in the rooms, so upon checking it found it was not working, reported it to reception (unfortunately the stroppy was was on duty), to be told it was not a fridge it was a cabinet which will only keep things in it at the same temperature that it went in at (Eh?), so that if I didn't put cold water in it it wouldn't get it cold! I told her that's because it didn't work, but she wouldn't have any of it, so I gave up! I mentioned it to the other couple when we saw them later and they said theirs had an ice box and all in it, so next morning I reported it to another receptionist, who immediately wrote on a list of maintenance jobs, and sure enough it got fixed the same day!!!!
Same kind of problem when I asked to book a courtesy room for the last afternoon of holiday as we had an evening flight, same stroppy woman told me I couldn't book it until the Friday evening (we left Sat), so first thing Friday morning saw someone else and booked it, no problem; by lunchtime the room was fully booked, just for the hell of it I saw the stroppy woman Friday evening and asked to book the room - she seemed to have great pleasure in telling me it was fully booked and nothing she could do, so imagine her shock when I turned up at the time on Saturday afternoon and asked for the key to the room I had booked!!!! Haha!
Maybe I am over-sensitive but from all angles felt that people thought they could take advantage of us because we did not have a male with us, my single-parent brother says he has the opposite experience when he goes on holiday with his 9-year old daugher - people falling over themselves to be helpful!
Anyway apart from all that, my daughter kept saying we had a better holiday last year in a different resort on the same island, in a lower-grade hotel, it was more friendly, more British there, more shops nearby, and nearer to the airport!!!! From her point of view all she wanted to do was play and swim in the pool all day every day, the look around a few shope in the evening, but there were no English-speaking children to play with at all that week (4 - 11 July), she did manage to find two German girls to play with and they communicated with gestures etc, but she was still lonely. I will be very careful next time to ensure that there are more British people where we go.
There was quite a choice of food in the restaurant but mostly geared towards the majority of hotel guests who seemed to be German, they also didn't like queuing very much, and although there were 5 pools, we had to get a sunbed at 7am each day if we wanted one! Yet I saw sunbeds with towels on and unoccupied until 2pm or 3pm some days!
Would I go back there? Not likely!
Would I book to go with Thomas Cook again - even less likely! I did complain about the coach seats to the Hotel Rep, who said he'd check it out with his boss, then told me the next day it was my own fault for agreeing to it! I told him I thought it was illegal and I shouldn't have even been asked, but he wasn't interested. I complained to the Travel Agent when I got home, they suggest I write and complain to Thomas Cook, although saying I will be fobbed off anyway, so it is worth the effort?
