Sunrise Costa Calma Beach Resort Reviews
Went to the Sunrise Costa Calma Beach Resort last February and it was so good we're heading back there tomorrow!
We went in a party of 4 (2 per room) and got rooms next door to each other with sea views as requested. Only niggle about the rooms were that they were on a corner so the balconies were very overlooked by others.
The rooms were very clean and comfortable with an excellent shower and small television. The maids did a brilliant job providing fresh folded towels and bedding (even a bit of "towel origami" which was quite funny!)
I don't know what it is like in peak season but we managed to get 4 sun loungers next to each other every day around the pool although at the beach, it was slightly harder unless you head down early. We didn't spend much time in the pools because they were absolutely freezing!! I imagine they will be a bit warmer in the summer though. They were however, clean and well maintained along with the rest of the grounds.
The food was excellent!! We were all inclusive I couldn't fault it at all! Like other have said, there is so much to choose from. Breakfast: full fry up, fruit, yoghurt, cold meat, cheese, waffles, pancakes (I can't even remember everything!) Poolside snacks in the morning and afternoon were good with cold meats, cheese, hot dogs and more. At dinner, they have a great choice to suit any taste. There was usually grilled chicken, chips, pasta, fish, salads, soup and a carvery with different meats each night (amongst other things) and an array of desserts.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and spoke very good English. The entertainment was lacking at night as other have said although they do try very hard and the team are constantly running about during the day doing different activities such as volleyball, darts, aqua aerobics and keep fit classes (indoors). At night they had a kids hour where they all danced and sang songs. The adult entertainment at night however was sometimes embarrassing and very old fashioned! Also as other have said, the Germans take their dancing very seriously!!(it was quite funny and strange but it's just different cultures!)
The bar does shut quite early (11pm) so we filled up some cups with water to take up to the rooms as there are not a lot of shops in the area and the shops in the hotel itself were expensive. All day though there is water, beer and soft drinks on tap with bar service for cocktails, liquor etc.
I would definitely recommend this hotel! The rep (Jason) was very helpful and we arranged the day trip to Oasis Park Zoo with him with bus pick up to and from the hotel. Can't wait to go back!!

Booked as last minute deal with Thomas Cook 3 weeks prior to departure.
Lovely break; Good value for Money. Staff friendly, hotel clean & tidy, rooms comfortable~ 3rd bed was pull out chair bed but daughter was delighted, stated it was comfortable & slept all night in it! Beach view was lovely. Maid service good. Air conditioning in room good.
All inclusive deal was great ~ plenty of choice for all. Snack bar was ok ~ lacked choice & volume of food on the days we visited it for light lunch but restaurant was fabulous & we returned home a little heavier than when we went! Note that gents do need to wear long trousers in the evening in the restaurant~ this is common in spain.
Plenty of sun loungers never a problem getting 3 together. Pools were great, grounds extensive, own beach with loungers, very short walk across beach to main beach of costa calma that is long sandy beach. Only problem was getting daughter out of pool to go anywhere else. You can hire beach towels if you wish from reception.
Plenty of drinks available throughout the day ~ hot/ cold/ alcoholic, sparkling wine at breakfast if you fancy it!
Entertainment team appeared very good ~ balanced right so you did not have to join in unless you wished to. Evening entertainment was ok ~ typical of spanish all inclusive hotels we have stayed in. Lots of families playing cards/ board games early evening which was good family time.
Yes there were lots of German families, as well as some italian & a few spanish but there were also some other brits & the kids made friends in the pool by day.
There a a few cats in the hotel grounds~ all friendly & loved by the kids & area kept very clean.
To sum up Brilliant Break, we had a fabulous relaxed week ~ would definitely go back.
(Please note that if you hire a car with Hertz you will be expected to put approx £800 euros on a credit card on arrival to cover vehicle damage ~ yes this is refunded after 48hrs of returning the car BUT this was not explained at time of booking over internet. We were not alone in finding this very stressful after a long flight with tired children in tow.)
- Advice: Room with view of beach. All inclusive good deal. Hire beach towels.

whatever negatives u read about this hotel, ignore them! great hotel, staff helpful at all times. 4 swiming pools, (2 for kids), its got its own beach, meals in restourant fab, im fussy, but there was so much choice, never had any trouble getting sunbeds! very comfortable beds in the hotel,(slept better here, than anywhere else iv stayed) try and get room on 5th floor,as u get great sea view, its a very quiet resort," (so no rowdy lager louts to spoil the holiday for you) "entertainment at nite basic" but it was ok for us, as we just wanted to chill out and relax, we went all inc, but used to go to snack bar for meal later in the day, instead of go to restourant at lunch time.hotel and grounds kept spotless clean by staff coudnt fault them, only one thing that upset us was the fact someone left a wet nappy in a bin, just near the doors to the glass lifts! why? there are so many bins to dispose of something like that all over the hotel!? we would recomend this hotel and resort to anyone either if you are a couple, or family. dont know what apartments are like, but if you look on website, they look spacious enough. (takes about an hour to transfer from the aiport and not 30mins, as in travel brochures!)
- Advice: dont get up early to put towels on sunbeds , there is no need to !

My wife and i have just returned from hotel after a weeks stay.this was our second time at the resort/hotel with a 5 year gap . nothing had changed much , still good food and excellent time had , hotel is looking a little tired in places, but as there is no spare cash around i can see why .
nice place to stay great staff , i would make sure when you book to ask for a sea veiw as some rooms dont.overall a great holiday and cheaper than when we paid 5 yrs ago.not many english at resort , which is what we like as it is nice to mix with all different nationalities .

My family and i have just returned from a fourteen night stay at the resort on an all inclusive package booked with Thomas Cook . Our party consisted of Mum, Dad, three small kids and Granny. When we booked the holiday we were assured by the travel operator that we would have two rooms next to each other due to the childrens ages and any issues that may have occurred with them . When we arrived at the hotel at 11pm we found out that we had been placed in rooms on opposite sides of the hotel. The next morning we raised the issue with the holiday rep and she was useless in sorting out this issue . The hotel staff however understood the problem and moved granny and two kids close to mum and dad the following day and placed the room booking issue at the foot of Thomas cook and the way that they send through the booking orders ( we booked in March ?? )
The rooms were very clean and the staff extremely friendly and nothing was too much trouble
An issue with this hotel is the fact that due to its large German based guests list all the sun loungers get reserved by 8.00 am . After that time it is impossible to obtain a sunbed and you will find yourself wandering around the pool like a sun seeking nomad. If you want a sun lounger you will sadly have to join the Germans in reserving a sunlounger in the 7.00 am morning stampede .
The kids entertainment was great with a fantastic team mainly geared up for kids from the ages of 4 years to about 10 .Families with older children or people who like a slightly more fast paced night life will find that there is not much to do in the evenings outside of the hotel, as the evening entertainment was on the whole poor, with the main lounge area having the feel of a working mans/British legion club !!!! .
In genral a great holiday in a nice quiet location with great food , fantastic beaches and worth going on the all inclusive package.
A great day out is the oasis park zoo , kids will love it but be warned that the cooling winds of the island appear not to reach this spot and it can get fiercely hot so take water sunscreen and hats for little heads.
I would recommend a holiday at the Sunrise Costa Calma beach and would seriously consider a return trip but don't forget your alarm clock to get those sunbeds!!!.
- Advice: Oasis park zoo great day out with a fantastic sealion show.

we arrived at the sunrise late on the 7th june 2011.. the hotel was very presentable from outside..(about an hour transfer from airport) single mum with 2 boys aged 11 and 6... they put a cold buffet on for the late arrivals!
first day was partly cloudy well till 12 noon, but cleared up and the weather was perfect from that day forth... as it is know as the windy island, u had to watch the mattresses for flyin off your beds, but it eased off each day we was there.. (never a problem to get a bed) although the second week of our stay was the german school holidays and it was a lot busier than the first week... they can be quite ignorant!!
there isn't much there, only a market on every wed/sun worth a visit.. and a little shoppin center with ruffly about 6 shops!! but in all fairness u don't need to leave the hotel.. the beach is right there the pools are brill we found the littler one at the back better, quiter..
food.... well not one complaint... never ill... the choice's of food everyday varied hence we never got bored... breakfast was from cereal to fry ups to yogurt and fresh fruit... dinners were plentyfull although we tended to eat at the pool bar as we where a little scruffy from the beach and pool.. pizza, hot dogs, chips etc in there... tea time was brill every night they had a fresh meet oven cooked to a tea... chicken, ribs, duck etc all cooked to perfection.. just fell off the bone.. freshly cooked sirloin steaks pork chops, salmon, pasta oh the list is endless....
the entertainment team do there very best and are very friendly... there is a mini club for ages 1-6 (i think) to young for my 6 year old... and the older clubs weren't open due to it not bein the holiday season... but that was the only down fall.. but they let my 2 lads join in in most of the adult games.. entertainment at night could have been better but acceptable!! franci and christina and marek were great... doin there waka waka dance...
we was going to go to the water park but was advised that its a 2 hour coach ride and only 8 slides and a waste of money.. but we did go to the oasis park which i would reccommend...
soooooooo all in all we had a fantastic time and hope this review has helped u!! leah 28, curtis 11, charlie6..xx

We were very satisfied. The staff is very friendly. Short path to the beach. Food very good and varied. Hotel is well maintained and clean. Pleasant is also a heated pool. The hotel can be recommended by us with a clear conscience. We stayed in similar room like this on 3rd photo here: http://www.costa-calma-beach-resort.net/gallery/
We'll be back.

Booked this holiday as a late deal through a major online and high st agent. Did refer to holiday watchdog prior to booking and I was happy that the majority of reports were well above average. I have to say that from start to finish our holiday was fantastic....So much so that my next holiday will be at this resort. The hotel is spotless and the staff were exceptional. Cockroaches??...yeah we so one...about half mile away from the hotel..!!! Our only complaint ( a spring through the mattress was dealt with within 2hrs ( a brand new mattress)....We were unlucky in that only 3 days out of seven were in weather character , sadly we had four very overcast days....This was compensated with the simple fact that the hotel was so good...The food was outstanding so much so that I came home with an extra ten pounds in weight....They even had good chips..!!!....I found myself experimenting with food I would not even normally try as it looked so tempting....Yes there are lots of Germans.....contrary to popular belief they are actually very nice people if you take time to talk to them....The majority speak good English....British people have pre-conceived about Germans as they do about us....This resort offers everything you need for a relaxing holiday (weather is a bonus).....Great food , great staff....attention to detail....I cannot recommend this resort and hotel highly enough....Go there...!!!!!

Just back from a 10 day holiday here. A lovely hotel but nothing in the brochure to warn you about the numerous steps everywhere. If you are not good on your feet it is not suitable. They also mopped the steps down to the dining room in the morning at breakfast time which made them very slippy at a busy time. The hotel was mostly German, very few English and the dining room staff spoke very little english. The bar staff worked very hard but there were not enough of them so waiting to be served took a lot of time especially as the Germans seemed to expect to be served first! and usually were! The food was lovely even though very repetative - fish or pork most days. We were 2 singles and had requested rooms close together. They couldnt have been much further apart. One being way over in the other building again with lots of steps. Would definately not reccomend hotel for people with any walking difficulties. Perhaps Thomas Cooke should mention this in the brochure. Best thing was the Rep Jason, he was lovely and very kind and helful.

my wife and i spent 2 wonderful weeks here over xmas and new year. We had a fantastic time, true there were too many Germans but the hotel and the beautiful made up for this. The food was very good, plenty of variety to suit all tastes. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and the staff were brilliant. We would definitely go back and would especially recommend it to couples.

As a single female travelling with 9-yr old daughter I felt we would have less stress on a package holiday rather than going independantly like we did last year! That assumption was my first mistake! Thomas Cook obviously didn't know how many customers they had to take from the airport - they did not have enough seats - and I was asked to put my 9-year old on my lap for the hour journey to the hotel, feeling tired, pressurised and fed up of the delays (had left home 12 hours earlier), I agreed, then wished I hadn't - after all I had paid for 2 adults, and no other adults got asked to sit on someone's lap on the coach! After a very uncomfortable hour on the coach, we finally got to the hotel, and were told we had a "pool view" room, went to it and discovered that the pool view had been before the extention to the hotel's restaurant was built, so couldn't open the curtains without someone in the restaurant being able to look straight in to the room - I didn't want to spend a week in darkness when in the room, likewise I felt I couldn't open the patio door as the room was on the ground floor and anyone could have easily come in, (my daughter didn't feel safe on the ground floor either), so I went straight back to reception to ask for another room, was told that as it was 11.15pm there were no rooms cleaned and available, so to come back at 9am next morning to see manager. Did that and got told it was the Manager's day off by a very stroppy receptionist! Not impressed! That evening someone else from reception rang the room to ask what my problem was! I explained and she was sympathetic, saying she would arrange a change of room next day, this was done although I had to pack up my case and leave it in the luggage room from 9am until 2pm before the new room was available. The new room was on the 6th floor and appeared to be better although the safe in the 1st room had a card with pin number, this room had a barrel and key (for which I had to pay 10euros deposit on top of the safe charge), this was more of a nuisance than anything having to look after a key for the rest of the week!
Talking to a very nice English couple we found out that there were fridges in the rooms, so upon checking it found it was not working, reported it to reception (unfortunately the stroppy was was on duty), to be told it was not a fridge it was a cabinet which will only keep things in it at the same temperature that it went in at (Eh?), so that if I didn't put cold water in it it wouldn't get it cold! I told her that's because it didn't work, but she wouldn't have any of it, so I gave up! I mentioned it to the other couple when we saw them later and they said theirs had an ice box and all in it, so next morning I reported it to another receptionist, who immediately wrote on a list of maintenance jobs, and sure enough it got fixed the same day!!!!
Same kind of problem when I asked to book a courtesy room for the last afternoon of holiday as we had an evening flight, same stroppy woman told me I couldn't book it until the Friday evening (we left Sat), so first thing Friday morning saw someone else and booked it, no problem; by lunchtime the room was fully booked, just for the hell of it I saw the stroppy woman Friday evening and asked to book the room - she seemed to have great pleasure in telling me it was fully booked and nothing she could do, so imagine her shock when I turned up at the time on Saturday afternoon and asked for the key to the room I had booked!!!! Haha!
Maybe I am over-sensitive but from all angles felt that people thought they could take advantage of us because we did not have a male with us, my single-parent brother says he has the opposite experience when he goes on holiday with his 9-year old daugher - people falling over themselves to be helpful!
Anyway apart from all that, my daughter kept saying we had a better holiday last year in a different resort on the same island, in a lower-grade hotel, it was more friendly, more British there, more shops nearby, and nearer to the airport!!!! From her point of view all she wanted to do was play and swim in the pool all day every day, the look around a few shope in the evening, but there were no English-speaking children to play with at all that week (4 - 11 July), she did manage to find two German girls to play with and they communicated with gestures etc, but she was still lonely. I will be very careful next time to ensure that there are more British people where we go.
There was quite a choice of food in the restaurant but mostly geared towards the majority of hotel guests who seemed to be German, they also didn't like queuing very much, and although there were 5 pools, we had to get a sunbed at 7am each day if we wanted one! Yet I saw sunbeds with towels on and unoccupied until 2pm or 3pm some days!
Would I go back there? Not likely!
Would I book to go with Thomas Cook again - even less likely! I did complain about the coach seats to the Hotel Rep, who said he'd check it out with his boss, then told me the next day it was my own fault for agreeing to it! I told him I thought it was illegal and I shouldn't have even been asked, but he wasn't interested. I complained to the Travel Agent when I got home, they suggest I write and complain to Thomas Cook, although saying I will be fobbed off anyway, so it is worth the effort?

Refer to Best Holiday Ever above this review carries the same feedback. This time we did get the short straw with room location with a north facing level 1 balcony ......sitting right next to neighboring hotel this meant we got no sun at all which was a bit of a bummer as we enjoy pre dinner drinks sitting in the sun. Drop in rating score is only because the hotel no longer offers local coffee liqueur in their all inclusive drinks which is a shame as my wife exclusively drinks Tia Maria. That said sadly we will not return to Costa Calma Beach for a third visit. We did raise a concern and we were assured it would be sorted out next day .... didn't happen so it was off to the shops for a weeks supply. Weather was better this year and food was excellent once again. Appeared to be a big increase in German visitors. If you can't handle them stay well away.
