Elegant & refined

The entrance lobby is spectacular, reception and concierge most helpful. Room was very nice with superb bathroom. Didn't use the pool. Breakfast was a bit dissapointing in that while it had all of the usual stuff it had no flair ( a great big breakfast but no real taste). Situated in the heart of town - everywhere within walking distance. I cannot understand the negative comments of other reviewers as I am usually very critical when standards are not upheld. I will definitely stay here again when next in Manchester. But I'll leave the last word to my boss - "John (me), you are picking the hotels in future" (I made the travel arrangements for this trip)

Stayed for one night here, with my other half. The hotel staff were incredibly helpful and polite, nothing was too much trouble for them. Our room was on the 6th floor, with a good view. The room was larger than I expected, and we enjoyed a great breakfast there, brought to us on a big trolley with wheels, wonderful!
Excellent Hotel

Had a two night (Fri/Sat) stay here in Feb. I was a bit concerned - having read some of the other reviews - about the apparent on-going refurbishment, and what we might find but everything reached or exceeded expectations. We didn't book in until 7.00pm-ish on the Friday eveneing and the reception was pretty busy hence we had a short wait but nothing to complain about. The foyer is beautiful, indeed the entire hotel is rather lovely (if you like that sort of grand victorian architecture) and I wished we'd had more time to spend enjoying it. The room was very good, it was a decent size with a kingsize bed, widescreen LCD TV, large bathroom with an excellent shower. Everything about the room was obviously pretty new and first-class quality. Breakfast cost something like £7.50 pp per day which I consider to be excellent value for this standard of hotel. If I had one (minor) quibble it would be that they could have afforded to leave a few more tea bags/coffee sachets out! We'd happily stay here again.
A Great Hotel

I stayed for 2 nights in February as a conference delegate. I must say that I am not a great fan of the more "traditional" type hotels, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. The refurbishment works seem by and large complete - and it shows. A very impressive lobby and public areas greet you on arrival. I found Reception extremely efficient, despite six of us descending all at once. My room - 606 - was much larger than anticipated and with a king-size bed, although there was not much of a view as the window was at a high level. That said, all the "essentials" were there, even a wide screen LCD TV. The refurbished bathroom was immaculate, large and modern - hard to believe you were in a hotel with a 1903 construction date.! All corridors have been decorated very tastefully and to a high standard - the only gripe being the lifts, one of which was continuously out of order during my stay thus causing longish waits at times. My colleagues tell me that the conference lunches and dinners were excellent. For my part, I used room service, which was first class and reasonably priced, although breakfast strangely arrived 20 minutes early one morning... One bone of convention was the application of service charges. Several delegates using the bar complained that they were charged a service charge on drinks without advance warning and despite the drinks already being the usual hotel level prices. That said, I paid a mere £3.10 for a largish pot of coffee in the lounge the next morning, which I found excellent value given the service and opulent surroundings.! All in all a very pleasant stay in a hotel which given its refurbishment now represents very good value. The very central location - next to Bridgewater Hall / GMex Centre etc. - makes it easy to reach most places of interest. The last mention, though, has to go to the hotel staff, who throughout my stay were as welcoming and attentive as any I have ever encountered.

This hotel is truly an enjoyable place to stay. We felt very lucky to stay there at such an excellent price. Our room in comparison to our friends was smaller, however it was beautifully decorated and only thing lacking was a hairdryer. It was lovely to spoil ourselves in the glamourous lobby with cocktails and the location is so central. We loved staying in this hotel and look forward to finding another bargain booking so that we can stay again. TIP: Search lots of different websites for offers as the variation in price is quite remarkable.
Fabulous Hotel
from BigRick
My wife and i have just returned from an overnight stay at The Midland, after making a last minute booking, and i have to say, what a fabulous hotel. It is currently being renovated, but this did not detract from our stay at all. We stayed in room 642, which is on the 6th floor at the front, overlooking the library and town hall, with a view over to The Lancashire Hills. The room itself was huge, with a separate seating area, and a plasma TV. The staff were extremely polite and efficient. Upon checking in, we were asked if we would like a complimentary bottle of wine brought to our room, which was most welcome and unexpected. All in all, we would give the hotel 5 stars, rather than the official 4 that it has.
Nice public face, but room a bit tired
from Suzanne85
Stayed over the new year at the Midland Manchester. The public rooms - bar, restaurant, etc. very nice. The room we were allocated however was very tired. It was marketed as a family room, but had two small double beds. OK for our 11 year old son, but a real squish for hubby and me. Also, although we had specified a non-smoking room on the booking, the room had clearly been used by (heavy) smokers in the past. Unfortunately, it wasn't until we'd completely unpacked before I realised, but once the stale smoke smell had risen, I could smell it all weekend. Not bad enough to move rooms, but yucky just the same. The bathroom was adequate - but certainly not swish. On New Year's Eve, at 8pm there was no hot water left. We'd been to a football match in the afternoon and so were probably getting ready later than the other guests at the hotel. Even so, a 4* hotel shouldn't run out of hot water for goodness sake! All in all, not what I would expect from a 4*. Probably won't stay there again.
Midland - you can do better than this !

Just stayed for a night - for the 4th time in the past 18 months or so, but the first time following the 75% complete re-furb. I've got to say I was disappointed - my expectations were higher ! On check-in we were given the keys to room 318 - erm I don't think so young lady - this room doesn't actually exist - or more accurately is currently in the middle of a building site ! When we finally got our room on the 5th floor - theoretically a superior room, it was very small - and although prettily decorated the bathroom has THE worst, most difficult to use, snake-like shower hose imaginable. Once in the bar area later on - chaos reigned trying to get a drink - not least because this is party season and the bars were swamped with eager young things trying to exchange vouchers for drinks. All in all a bit of a let-down, but I'm booked in again in a fortnight's time, and expect things to have improved (a lot). The sign saying "...sorry for any INCONVINEANCE..(sic)..." on reception - just about summed everything up.
Will be going back to the Midland
from Louisanaw
This was my first time to Manchester, stayed at The Midland Hotel for 2 nights. I will be booking to go back early next year. The central location of the hotel was fantastic. The bedroom was massive and very comfortable. Breakfast was huge and filled you up for the whole day! Staff at the hotel were extremely friendly. I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel and can't wait to go back.

Just returned from a weekend break at the Midland, it was superb. We were on 5th floor in a refurbished room- lovely. Breakfast was a treat, didn't need another thing until our evening meal.Staff were excellent and we will be returning.Agree with other tripadvisor-drinks in the hotel are way over the top. This hotel is also superbly situated for everything.
My husband booked a surprise luxury weekend break at this so-called prestigious hotel for my birthday. The entrance and welcome belied the truth behind the hotel. The room was pretty basic and rather cramped. It was stuffy and no opportunity for fresh air. Our own bedroom... more
