We have just returned from our holiday at the Sol Stella Maris in Umag Croatia. We were 2 families of 4 and 5 persons and booked the accommodation independently through a Slovenian Tour Company.
Our family had a 2 bed apartment and our friends a 1 bed. The 2 bed apartment was in fact a small bungalow overlooking the marina (approx 20 ft away!). Some of the fittings were a little dated but the apartment had been refurbished and was very comfortable.
Our friends had a 1 bed apartment that was in a block and was very small, they subsequently upgraded to an apartment the same as ours and were very happy. They had a similar view to us overlooking the sea and marina.
This complex is large and well laid out with numerous restaurants and snack bars. There are 2 swimming pools both with salt water (would have preferred fresh!). There are lots of sunbathing areas next to the rocks and on the small pebble beaches.
The whole area is very beautiful and unspoilt. It has not been overrun by British Tourists yet, in fact we rarely heard an English voice.
Food was very inexpensive and very good, we ate out most lunchtimes and evenings as it was so reasonable. Try the restaurant buffet Jezero, best on the complex, superb salads and main meals and cheap drinkable wine! You can take the train into Umag for 10 kunas (approx £1.00). Once again a lovely unspoilt town with a huge choice of restaurants.
We would definitely recommend this complex to families and older couples. It is not for the young at heart as the night life is very laid back. There are lots of activities to do during the day such as football, bike riding, tennis, table tennis, mini golf and loads more.
Croatia is a beautiful country and we will definitely be returning. I only hope that it remains as unspoilt!

We have just had a great family holiday at the Stella Maris, the apartments (we had two 3 person apartment.) were basic and at first I was disappointed, the beds and bedding were new and clean. We were spoilt for choice for things to do on the complex and in Umag.
Umag is an unspoiled beautiful little town that has not been discovered by the British pub and breakfast brigade, long may that last. The food was of very good quality and was incredibly reasonable.
The Stella Maris complex could get busy, you could join in or go find a quiet spot under a tree the choice is yours, we enjoyed the APT tennis and all that entailed and all the live music which was free of charge, we saw the Berlin Chamber Orchestra a marvelous night. I loved Umag and will go back but maybe 4* next time.

Sol Stella Maris is not a nice place to stay. If you can imagine a Haven resort full of German teenagers you have it. The resort is on a stretch from Umag to Katoro which consists of concrete beaches and concrete buildings. Everything in the resort needs to be paid for and it all adds up. Croatia is a beautiful country but this place is not so beautiful. Our holiday was only made good by the expensive trips we went on.

We have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sol Stella Maris Apartments and we had an excellent time. The accommodation was slightly disappointing and we did move from the first apartment that was allocated to us as it was in an unsuitable location but this was dealt with in a good professional manner by the Thompson Rep who was more than helpful.
The resort itself had everything you needed and lots to keep the children entertained at a small cost for each activity. The swimming pools were cold as they were salt water but the sea was clear as crystal and actually warmer than the pools, don’t expect any sandy beaches as the beaches are concrete and rocky which sounds awful but was actually nice. We gave our daughter a net and she was happy all day in the rock pools finding crabs and all sorts of sea-life.
All restaurants on the complex served excellent food and very reasonable and plenty of it. Umag town was a long walk with children but we used the local train/ come tractor at a costs of £2.50 for all of us and it took us right into the town and back to our complex. Umag town is a hidden treasure, you must walk the through the cobbled unspolied streets to the restaurants on the sea wall, with amazing views and excellent local dishes, again at very reasonable costs. The shops are good and some excellent souvenirs can be found.
Umag is an un-spolit town and ideal for families and couples not really recommended for the young looking for clubs and trendy bars. We also did the trip to Venice which is suppose to take 2 hours on boat from Umag but this is more like a 3.5 hour trip and is a very long day with kids, but Venice was breath taking and a must-see.
All in all we had an excellent holiday and would go back, in fact we are already considering re-booking for next year with friends but will be booking a bungalow and not an apartment.
Also take a cardigan or jacket for the evening, as it does go quite chilly. Umag was an enjoyable holiday that can be relaxing or as active as you want it to be, lets hope the Brits don’t ruin this beautiful country and that is stays a beautiful little heaven that it currently is.
