I was here for a stag do in March 07 for 2 nights. The hotel is not far from the train station (about 15mins walk) and has small leisure facilities in the basement. In fact, I've never seen such a small swimming pool and gym but thankfully it was empty when I was there.... more

We stayed at the thistle on Portland Street for 2 nights being Fri and Sat. The location is ideal for all the sights of Manchester. It is a mile from the MEN arena and a taxi rank is outside the hotel for easiness. The hotel itself is lovely, rooms clean and spacious with... more

Contacted them by phone explaining my physical disability and they allocated (larger refurbished) room on 5th floor. Booked in to find room only just fits a standard double bed and a portable heater on floor (no heating) and extremely noisy and vibrating fan or something... more

This hotel never fails to under whelm.
I have been booked in on several occasions and it is poor. If staying in rooms at the back pull your curtains. There is a residential apartment block at the rear.

Atrocious
Where to start?! Room was tiny, mildew on walls and peeling wallpaper. Very stuffy and the air conditioning was non-existent. Got my digital camera stolen from my room, reported to the staff at the desk who promised the Duty Manager would contact me. She never did, and I had to call 2 days later again to speak to the Manager who dismissed my claim, stating that the staff would never take anything. So I must be a liar?! No apology given either. Truly the worst excuse for a 4-star hotel I ever stayed in. DO NOT stay here, not unless you are Paul Daniels trying to make expensive items disappear!
Awful, Dirty, Foul
Certainly not worthy of its star rating. Extremely disappointed. There were stains all over the floor and the bedding. I felt more like I was in a hostel than a hotel. Appalled. Ordered champagne on arrival... but it was not in the room when we got there. In all, bad service, bad hotel. I would not go back. It spoils the "Thistle" name.
never again !! a joke it must be !!???
what a rip off!! £120 !!!!! rooms very small, dirty and dark mold and mildew in bathroom ! burnt breakfast noisey and hot windows don't open !! 4* ha ha ha ha someones having a laugh here ! 2* should be stay at your own risk ! or for the safer and more comfatable option try a park bench !! never will me and the wife come back !!
One night stay Saturday night - enjoyed it.
Stayed for 1 night (Saturday). Room was small, but perfectly suitable and contained everything I needed and the most important thing - it was clean. The Reception and Dining Room areas were very nice . Had a meal Lunch time which was very good. The breakfast was excellent and the staff were exceptional. The only problem was the people in the next room who had obviously had a good night out, they came in very late and had very loud voices! Enjoyed my weekend and would stay there again.
The breakfast was good.....
Very dissapointing for a supposed 4 star hotel, bathroom not very clean and the rooms were so small I couldnt fully open my suitcase on the floor!! The gym was a laugh, Ive seen better in someones house, very small!!! The pool is a joke, more like a large bathtub! On a brighter note, the breakfast is fantastic, and the serving staff are more than helpful, the location is central but that is all threre is positive to staying here. My advice is DONT DO IT!! How on earth is this a 4 star hotel?? I would struggle to give it 2 stars.
Definitely not a 4* hotel
This hotel is very poor value for money and the 110+ pounds per night the Thistle charges is absolutely ridiculous to put it mildly. If you get a good deal at a rockbottom price and have no choice at all - you can just about endure it. The size of the rooms is probably the worst part about the hotel. The rooms are simply TINY! The swimming pool just like the rooms is TINY - it is the smallest pool I have ever seen, the only highlight of the leisure area was the Jacuzzi. The hotel itself looks quite nice from the outside, but you can see the reality as soon as you enter the hotel, the reception area is decorated very poorly and looks highly disorganised. It is definitely not what one would expect from a hotel which claims to be 4*, which is the most shocking part about this hotel! HOW ON EARTH IS THIS HOTEL A 4*??? The real plus point of this hotel is the location. You are truly living in the heart of the city centre and will have no problems as far as transport is concerned, particularly if you are not driving.
Avoid unless you get a bargain price...
Firstly the good points. The location of this hotel is great - very central. If you get the hotel for a rock bottom price and aren't too concered about your surroundings then the Thistle is fine. However, when I first walked into the hotel the reception area was a bit delapidated and looked a bit of a mess. The staff were friendly and checked me in quickly. The hotel corridors were narrow and horribly decorated, with panels missing off the roof. My room was equally small and narrow with a damp stain on the ceiling. The bed was comfortable, although the "climate control" was poor and offers little control over temperature. The bathroom was not nice at all. The bath fixtures were dirty and completely uninviting and I felt a bit uncomfortable there. There was mould and mildiew on the roof. This is aside from the fact that the second time I used my shower it come off the wall and collapsed into the bath, narrowly missing my foot. The staff quickly offered for me to change rooms and while this room was slightly nicer, the bath refused to drain water and I was standing in half a bath of water whilst showering. The leisure facilities were extremely disappointing, the only redemption the nice big jacuzzi. The pool is small and left me feeling ill at ease as it is surrounded by dirty water outlets. The gym is tiny in the extreme, lockers broken for the most part and the sauna small and dirty. As I said - don't stay here unless you're on a budget and get an exceptionally cheap price. I would never return to this hotel which I am astounded, claims to be 4*. It would be a very low 3* at a push.
Travelodges are better
I was forced to stay at the Thistle Manchester in November 2004 after a delayed flight. I managed to get a rate of £105, better than the £170-ish they had on their price list. The corridors were awful. Wallpaper peeling, skirtings hacked off and generally it seemes in dire need of a lick of paint. The room was okay, but a little small for the price and interior decor was only marginally better than in the corridor. I really don't know how they class it as a 4* hotel. It would be pushing it for 3*. Had I known in advance I needed to stay in Manchester, I would have booked something like a Travelodge which is far cheaper, and of a better quality decoration. The main good thing for this hotel is its excellent location. The service is good, but if you want 4* then unfortunately you'll be dissapointed at the Thistle Manchester.
don't do it !
Having been regualry booked in here on business I can confidently say that it never improves. I ventured into the health suite dungeon the last time. I was glad I was not the only guest who left after five minutes. The walls had gungy stuff on them , talc all over the floor and made you feel ill. Always a long wait for food / and your car and I was lucky , my colleagues had no water in their rooms for hours then it came out black sooty. The only thing it has going for it is the location.
2.5 star at best
I stayed at the Thistle Manchester on November 20, 2004. After reading the negative reviews of this hotel I was a bit worried about staying here, but everything was booked solid in Manchester so I was stuck. I managed to find a deal for £52 for a single room on laterooms so I booked it. Good points: - superbly comfortable bed. Nice and firm, and very nice duvet and pillows. - I was given a double bed instead of a single without even asking! Unheard of when you book a discounted single room. - although it was a smoking room it was well aired and didn't reek of stale cigarette smoke - bathroom had a good shower and was well maintained - very nice staff - excellent location Bad points: - the hotel is quite run down and in desperate need of refurbishment. Paint and wallpaper peeling off the walls, stains and scrape marks on the walls in the corridors, old decorations in the rooms. - no hairdryer in the room (?!) - walls are fairly thin so if you've got a noisy neighbour you're in trouble - there are only 2 tiny elevators to service 200 rooms. They take AGES to arrive, and when they do they are jammed with people. They also have a mind of their own and stop at every floor for no reason. Overall, it was an ok hotel for what I paid (£52) but there's no way on earth I would pay the regular price of £110+ per night. Absolutely not! It's a 2 star, maybe a 2.5 star. I have no idea how it gets away with being labelled a 4 star.
