We stayed at the thistle on Portland Street for 2 nights being Fri and Sat. The location is ideal for all the sights of Manchester. It is a mile from the MEN arena and a taxi rank is outside the hotel for easiness. The hotel itself is lovely, rooms clean and spacious with tea/coffee facilities and iron. The bottom floor has a lovely pool that is as warm as a bath!! The Jacuzzi comes on every 5mins and also there is a same sex sauna. I loved it there because you can watch the sport as you’re relaxing! The bar area is great, again with a big screen for the sport but pricey drinks, £7.95 for a pint and a j20 drink. We never bothered eating in the restaurant because again, too many places to try just on your doorstep. Chinatown is a five min walk, cheap and gorgeous food too. Its five mins from the famous canal st too, a great night out whatever your preference. The only complaint I had, is that the staff don’t speak very good English but this is easy enough to overcome by repeating yourself!! All in all, I would stay there again and I’m sure you will have a fab time in Manchester.

Contacted them by phone explaining my physical disability and they allocated (larger refurbished) room on 5th floor.
Booked in to find room only just fits a standard double bed and a portable heater on floor (no heating) and extremely noisy and vibrating fan or something outside the window.
At the desk the duty manager was very understanding and apologetic and relocated us to a suite on the 7th floor where the heating was switched on.
Hotel classed as 4 star but in my mind the reality was far from 4 star (the rooms were "tired" with mildew around the bath seals, etc).
All in all the weekend turned out ok but it could have been a disaster. Thank you must go to Victor who helps us!!!!!

This hotel never fails to under whelm.
I have been booked in on several occasions and it is poor. If staying in rooms at the back pull your curtains. There is a residential apartment block at the rear.

I was here for a stag do in March 07 for 2 nights.
The hotel is not far from the train station (about 15mins walk) and has small leisure facilities in the basement. In fact, I've never seen such a small swimming pool and gym but thankfully it was empty when I was there. It’s more a plunge pool I was told but there is a sauna and Jacuzzi too - alright to unwind and relax but not with more than three people it’s not.
The buffet breakfast is quite good and plentiful but the bar is a little expensive but open until the early hours when everyone pops in for a nightcap. The bar food is OK but again quite expensive. The staff are miserable and their English very limited - they ruin the impression of the hotel to be honest.
The rooms are clean and tidy with a comfy big bed although not much room to put a suitcase or bag to be honest. I've been in worse though. The view is a warehouse or aircon unit to the rear of the building - noisy all night.
Overall, for the money it is a little dear but location is fine for shops, train station, trams, restaurants, bars, etc. Probably about 15mins walk to the main shopping street (not 5mins as the website states) but plenty of local scenery about to keep everyone happy.
