Sep 2006, Miss C Fletcher

From the minute we pulled up outside 42 The Calls we received outstanding service. Check-in was very efficient and we were offered a complimentary glass of wine as we checked in. Our bags were carried upstairs and we were shown how to use everything in the room. We were... more

What a fantastic break!
Well I've been to the Calls twice now and I am dying to go back! It is right in the city center and so close to all the nice bars and restaurants. The rooms are amazing with massive beds and big feather duvets. There's also the 42inch plasma on the walls which is great to watch in bed. The service was great and the view onto the canal was really nice. I would choose this hotel as my first choice every time!
Quiet and intimate
My wife and I stayed here in July and enjoyed the stay. As a boutique style hotel, it was a refreshing change from the faceless chain hotels. The hotel can be a little difficult to find with the joys of the one way systems around Leeds, but the location is fantastic, being close to the main shopping areas and now linked to the new bar/restaurant developments on the opposite side of the river. (Car parking was limited in the area, but the hotel offers valet parking, which is prompt and secure.) The rooms are spacious and unusual, with a mixture of whitewashed walls, wooden beams and high tech gadgetry. We found the bed very comfortable and suitably overladden with pillows and cushions as seems to be the style of boutique hotels! We chose to eat at Whitebait which is a fish restaurant very close to the hotel, returning to the nearby bars for a late drink. As other reviewers mention, the hotel has a small honesty bar, but we found this not really to our taste and feel the hotel might benefit from a full service bar of a suitable style of decoration to the bedrooms.
Non-Smokers Beware
Had business in Leeds on Monday, so my wife and I decided to enjoy the weekend in Leeds. Booked the "Directors Room" for the full effect. Room was nice (although the bed was showing its age). The problem was that the room reeked of the smell of previous smoking guests. While the hotel made a number of attempts to clean the air, it was to no avail. The hallways also reeked with smoke and no attempt was made to make the walk to the room any more pleasant. Overall, a reasonable room, but I would not return until MONTHS after the hotel became wholly non-smoking.
Uniquely Styled, beautiful hotel, great location
The beds were large and extremely comfortable (with duvets)and the bed linen was wonderfully luxurious. Sweeties and smarties in the room were an amusing touch. Flat screen tv with all the gadets kept the boys happy. Bathroom felt spacious with large bottles of Molton Brown products. Only criticsm the staff at breakfast were a little unhelpful. Breakfast really did finish at 9.30am on the dot with no compromise. Food excellent and a fantastic range of saussages were available. On the whole the hotel did feel friendly and welcoming. We had our own private meeting room (The Blue Room), we were well looked after without staff becoming intrusive. Catering all arrived as ordered. Room was light, airy and spacious (smokers did have to stand out in the street though!). We ate in the hotel restaurant, 44 The Calls, the food was lovely, a great range of local produce. Very small bar, and unusually for a restaurant you were able to smoke at the table. They did stop serving drinks at mindnight and we had to retire to the hotel lounge and 'honesty' bar.
Lived up to expectations
The hotel was everything that we could of wanted. The location was perfect for shopping and nightlife. The room was fantastic and luxurious. The valet parking was also a great added feature and the staff very helpful and friendly. A must when staying in Leeds.
Fantastic hotel!
This is a beautifully designed, characterful hotel with excellent service in a convenient location. Lots of nice little touches that make a difference. We got upgraded to the Penthouse Suite - which is fantastic! Has to be one of the nicest places I've stayed in.
An oasis
I recently stayed at this super and intimate hotel - I had read many excellent reviews and it stood the test. The bedrooms are brilliant - I think they are all diferent in this former canal side warehouse - and the bathrooms huge.I liked the plasma TV, but as it was attached to a far wall, not easy to watch from the bed ! The hotel is just off the main shopping/business area in the centre of Leeds, a brilliant city for a short break with beautiful Yorkshire countryside within a few minutes drive out of the city. We had lunch at the adjoining Pool Court and the food and service were impeccable. Will be back, next time with Helen who was unable to make this trip.
Wonderful Hotel - Highly Recommended!
This has to be one of the best hotels that I have stayed in. It is a beautiful converted mill with all the mod cons. Our room was huge with a beautiful view of the river, a plasma flatscreen tv, dvd and cd player (with speakers in the bathroom!), large bathroom with Molten Brown goodies, wonderful bed linen and robes and above all, absolutely first class service. I would recommend this hotel to anyone, I thought it was fabulous. Near enough to the town centre for easy access but nice and quiet for a good night's sleep. Wonderful and good value.
I would certainly stay here again
Stayed here over 2 nights around the August Bank Holiday for a work trip. Location wise, it is a very short walk from the train station and is in a quiet area but still well within walking distance to the city centre. Found the rooms to be very nice - clean, quiet and comfortable, with lots of pillows on a good size bed. Bathroom was also very nice which I would not fault. The daily supply of smarties and biscuits was a nice little touch. Nice view of the river too. Minor gripe about the TV - it was a nice small flatscreen (my colleague had a twin room with widescreen set) but its position meant I had to crane my neck up and to the left to watch from sitting in bed. The volume was too low for me to hear it clearly from the armchair or seat by the desk. But not a huge issue at all. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Very welcoming and pleasant and a credit to the hotel.
Full of character, but a little shabby
We have just returned from a two night stay at 42, The Calls. We found the service to be excellent and the valet parking a great added extra. There were some lovely touches such as the handmade biscuits and fudge, molton Brown toiletries and fresh coffee. Unfortunately this was let down by attention to detail such as cleaning - there were cobwebs on the window ledge and a good vacuuming would have helped. I understand that a refurb is due and the decor is past it's best - for example shabby paint work, tatty mohair throw, dodgy shower and a cracked tile in the bathroom. The flat screen TV was excellent, but was let down by being situated on a cracked chipboard shelf and the films were extortionately expensive. At other hotels in this price range films are usually included. The location is excellent - very central and we had a lovely view of the river, but the room was very small. It was also inadequately soundproofed especially through the interconnecting door and noise from the corridor kept us awake at night. When our neighbour smoked - so did we! On the whole we enjoyed our stay, but some very minor improvements could make such a huge difference. I think 42, The Calls has been resting on it's laurels since winning awards ten years ago and needs a thorough overhaul.
