Hilton Sheffield Hotel

Don't expect out and out luxury here but just an average 3* experience. Decent location near train station and city centre. A poorly built modern hotel (bad soundproofing, tin pot bathrooms and non-characteristic corridors that reminded me of an office block). Good points: Great gym and pool, good staff, nice lobby, tea/coffee in room and hotel bar open til late with nice outside balcony. I have just completed a 3 night stay at the Hilton in Sheffield. It was very disappointing and very overpriced. The food is very poor. The rooms are small and basic in the extreme. The whole hotel has a run down feel about it: vending machines are empty, the interiors are a bit shabby. The only good aspect of the stay was the pool and gym which are probably run by someone else. The staff were mixed: some very unhelpful; some OK. All in all a hotel which is very poor value for its exorbitant price.

When you think of Hilton, you know what to expect, excellent facilities, engaging and friendly staff, in short a pleasant stay. The Sheffield Hilton certainly lived up to this, from the moment I walked through the door the staff made me feel welcome and over the week i stayed I became a member of the family!! we arrived in november 2004. The deal we payed for cost £139 for two people for two nights with a meal on our first night .A vary decent price.Now the bad side , our meal was vary poor food cold and badly presented.Breakfast on our first mourning seemed to be vary under staffed better next day.Hotel rooms were ok nothing special, drink prices were vary high.( take your own )

so what does £150 buy you in an overnight stay at the sheffield hilton? surly staff, no one to help you with your luggage, small rooms, sheets so thin you can see the pattern of the mattress through them, cracked tiles in the bathroom, paint peeling off the ceiling in the bathroom (a lovely sight when lying in the bath!), shower pressure so low you can barely rinse the shampoo out of your hair, room service that arrives without cutlery and no one bothering to then deliver any when requested. but please, if you ignore this review and still... more

I have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions. Don't book through the Hilton Hotel website as you'll pay an inflated price (which does not include breakfast at £14 a head). Many of the rooms are near the lifts/elevators and if you are unlucky enough to have one of them don't retire for bed early. Most recently (29/10/03) we came down for breakfast at 8.50 am and were situated right next to the cutlery drawer which staff were using to set the other tables for evening meal - even though they "served" breakfast until 9.30. In the eight weeks I've been here we've had a power failure, water system failure (twice), car park barrier failure, and TV system failure . None of the "minibar" machines on any floor has worked since I've been here. The towels in some rooms were a little raggy and I have found other guests very noisy. The hotel seems to be a favourite with the road crews of visiting American bands/shows even though the chain is now owned by a British company.
