Bolton Moat House Hotel Reviews

When I stayed over for a weekend I had the most awful time at the hotel. I had to wait four hours for my room when I had booked it 2 days before I went. When I got my room it hadn’t been cleaned it had crisp packets, beer cans and peanuts everywhere. Finally it came to... more

Best in Bolton, very comfortable
Our 2 day stay at this hotel was very comfortable indeed. Friends in the area had informed us that the hotel had recently opened after a major refurbishment following a fire. Everything seemed new or hardly used at all. The public areas were swish and highly polished and the staff most helpful, smiling and attentative. The rooms were clean, tidy and tastefully decorated. The bathroom toiletries were of good quality and the bathroom had a very modern appearance. It’s good to have a decent magnified mirror in the bathroom.! Despite our room facing the front main road, there was no traffic noise and we had a sound sleep in a very comfortable bed. Breakfast in particular was a lovely and welcome surprise – there was a lot of choice – buffet style with full English, Continental choice with pastries and cheeses, fresh fruit and yoghurts. Food could also be cooked to order. Our complaint would be the size of the room. We had booked an Executive room but this was very small compared to other hotels of a similar grading. It would have been a struggle if we had more than one full size suitcase. Not enough room for 2 people to be in the same part of the room at the same time. The bathroom was especially small – elbow room only. Perhaps this particular room is best suited to a single business traveller and not a couple. The mini bar was poorly stocked – no branded spirits and small choice of extras. Bottled water was complimentary when we arrived but not replaced after the first night. We don’t know if this is policy or only hotels abroad that replace water at no additional cost. We were a little apprehensive after reading previous Trip Adviser reports of this hotel but overall, if we were in the area again, would most definitely stay at the Holiday Inn Bolton town centre. One of the better in the UK that we’ve stayed in. A word of warning about the local taxis – they don’t seem to know where they are going and rely on You giving Them directions – not good when you’re in a suburb of Manchester that you’ve never visited and need taking back to one of the biggest hotels in the area - the Holiday Inn Bolton town centre – next to the biggest night club in the town (but no noise) – next to so and so…….. very bad. We wondered how they managed to get a licence, especially with the standard of driving too! Take a map with you.
Best place to stay in Bolton
I have just spent the weekend at the Holiday Inn Bolton centre and its my third time here. I have to say that I have never had a bad experience whilst staying here and this time was no different. We were 4 adults and both rooms were really nice, clean spacious and the air con worked a treat. the location is very central but also quiet so no disturbed sleep, the staff with whom we came into contact were also really nice and helpful even arranging a champagne bucket with ice and 4 glasses (for a small celebration in our room) even though we had bought the champagne elsewhere. I visit Bolton quite regularly and when i do I will always choose this hotel.
Enjoyed my stay
Found the place fairly easy, was worried about some of the reviews. Breakfast was the best meal, superb!!, there is a good choice of traditional English, pastries, fruit and cerials.Don't have your evening meal there for the price you pay in the restaurant it is not worth it.The food is not brilliant either. Rooms were clean and well furnished including TV, phone, hair dryer and air con....I wish you could leave it on though when you left the room. The lifts worked! and at no time did I feel threatened when walking around outside the Hotel. The other correspondant must have just had a bad experience that day! Where the Hotel lost more marks was the incessent banging of interior doors after I had gone to bed! I have given this Hotel a neutral mark but with a little price adjustment in the restaurant and some internal noise insulation I think anyone would be happy to stay at the Holiday Inn in Bolton Centre.
Nil p-wah !
Here we go...... Check in was fast. (Hardly any guests for a hotel of this size so I am not surprised it was efficient) The room was ok but a little unclean in areas - just been refurbished but the bathrooms can't of been surely. There is no mini fridge in the room as per the hotel website and I couldn’t find an ice machine. There is air-con though. I stayed on a dinner bed and breakfast basis - it only cost £65 for 2 and now I know why it is so cheap. We tried out the leisure facilities. The swimming pool is small and I don’t like the idea that you walk to the changing rooms through the pool area with your outdoor footwear on? The changing rooms are horrible, well in need of a refit. The starter was ok but the main meals were either overcooked or undercooked, no presentation. Left most of it and we did not have anything else and promptly left. The young guy who served us was very nice though - not his fault! Drinks are overpriced, but I kind of expect this from a hotel chain. We were actually so hungry that we ordered a ham and mustard sandwich in the room - they couldn’t even manage to put the mustard on it. And all we really wanted was ice cream - they could only provide sandwiches at night, it was impossible for them to open the freezer and scoop some into a bowl - oh yes they really aimed to please. The pay movie we watched started 20 mins into the film and didn’t play well, constant flickering throughout. The doors do only shut by slamming them. This kept us awake and we also woke up to it. I had asked for a late check out - the cleaners started coming in our room from about 9am and continued to do so - I was so tired I screamed though the door for them to leave us alone! I cannot stand it when you hear one knock on the door followed by an announcement and the door is then opened. If that chain had not of been on it would of been very embarrassing! I also lost it when reception rang to see when we were leaving - every time we nodded back off they promptly woke us back up again!! After complaining I was told that no one had complained about the doors slamming before? Yes they are fire doors, but other hotels seem to manage them effectively. We requested breakfast in bed, but why - I have no idea, I was too tired to eat it as I had not slept. Although this was already paid for we were charged £6 x 2 for having in our room, plus £2 x 2 for having it brought to the room. An extra £16 for breakfast which I had already paid for? Joke! It was not worth a fiver. To add to this - they tried to charge me twice for the £6 x 2 charge!! Make sure you check your bill! Well I made my complaint, it was taken quite well considering I was in a really bad mood and could hardly talk as I felt as if I would really lose my temper!! - I was told that I would receive an email by tomorrow latest - so if I hear back I will post an update too let you know how they handle it. Not a nice experience at all. One thing I have learnt from staying in holiday inn hotels, is that they are not all the same - there appears to be no set standards - if you find a great one you will go back, but don't think that the rest will live up to your expectations or you will be very dissapointed.
Get me out of here!
Not impressed at all with this place. First of all the area it's in is as rough as can be, pimps and druggies line the street corners, the only clean restaurants are McDonalds and KFC and the hotel restaurant menu is overpriced and inspiring enough to send me to the local grotty kebab shop. First of all the hotel gave me the wrong room number, then they gave me the pass key to get into it much to the annoyance of myself and the naked guest already in there. The lifts work when they want to and either don't stop, or stop at every floor the bar, a £3 for a bottle of lager is a total rip off The room was shabby The cleaning was not even basic The only way to close the doors is to slam them, great for the 3.15am wake up call! The security was so good that when my car was smashed into, they couldnt even be bothered to tell me, in fact, they didn't even close the gaping door. The hotel was festooned with Marks and Spencers training posters, because of a junket of some kind and it was obvious that they wanted those customers, but not difficult ones like myself. My Tip? Avoid it, Preston is cheaper and 10000% better, Salford Quays Express is loads better too. Hell will freeze over before I go back there!
lovely hotel
Stayed here for one night, got a good rate off [--] much cheaper that anywhere else we found! Lovely room, had all the essentials and was clean. Plenty of space. Check in was fast. Cannot comment of the bar/restaurant in the hotel as we didn't stop in. The motivation club in the hotel was amazin! the pool is quite big and around the pool area is lovely and very clean. There is also a spa, and sauna which were both nice. The shower room by the pool is lovely and clean with all the essentials provided complimentary as are the towels. The situation of the hotel is ideal. It is pretty much next door to Ikon a club in bolton but dont let this put you off theres no noise nor rowdy people as the club is on the side closer to town which is the way the people walk to and from the club. The hotel is approx a 5 minute walk from the town centre where there is a good selection of places to eat and plenty of bars etc. Would recomend this hotel for a stay in Bolton.
Hidden History!
Stayed here on a number of occasions over the years, the main building was originally a church, then a carpet warehouse, then the Moat House, now the Holiday Inn Bolton (just the same but the rooms now have aircon) A bad fire here a few years ago (2 fatalities) stigmatised the place for a long time and as a result it was pretty good value. The rooms are good (but don't make any special requests - they're ignored) breakfasts are ok, the pool is so-so but the drinks are expensive. I've eaten in the restaurant a few times and it's nowt to shout about - there's not much better nearby unless you fancy a kebab or pizza. Location is the best in town, with the shopping center, bars, nightclub and casino across the street -along with 'Softys Hard Stuff' adult emporium! Parking is good too, in the underground car park. Shop around for the deals as the official website says it's the cheapest but 'Superbreak' is better.
Disastrous meal at the Moat House
I attended the Bolton Moat House Hotel for a dinner organised by an association of which I am a member. The meal was quite the worst I have ever had in a commercial restaurant. The main course consisted of turkey breasts wrapped around some sort of stuffing: this was hard to cut and totally unpalatable. The gravy/sauce served with it was so salty as to be completely inedible, and the sprouts were to all intents and purposes uncooked. I like sprouts al dente, but these were just badly prepared. The Christmas Pudding sweet was served in a vile white substance which my wife had some difficulty in scraping from the roof of her mouth, and the pudding itself was devoid of taste. Overall I would recommend others to avoid at all costs eating at the Moat House Bolton, at least until they employ a competent chef.
Clean and comfortable
I have stayed at the hotel on many occasions this year, usually for 2/3 days at a time (visiting family). The hotel offers some good deals via the internet. the rooms are basic, clean and comfortable. Some of the beds re old and matresses pretty thin and other residents can prove to be very noisy - parties until late at night.
