a nice stay
from A TripAdvisor Member
its sunday the fifth of december, ive just got back from staying at the moathouse, we stayed two nights,i was a bit worried about staying there after reading some of the bad reviews, but soon realised i neednt have worried,we had a river view and stayed on the eighth floor, the room was spotless and i couldnt say a bad remark about it,the only one thing i didnt like is that on the saturday morning we had to wait over half an hour to go in for breakfast,i dont know what the reason for this was,as there seemed to be a lot of empty tables, maybe...

4* hotel more like a 1 or 2*
from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel is rated 4* but it is more like something you would get with a 1 or 2* rating. The hotel is situated about 5 minutes walk from the town centre and about 10 minute walk from the train station. We paid extra for a riverside view and were given a room on the 6th floor which did have a magnificent view, what they dont tell you is that there is very noisy pubs only a stones thow away which stay open until the early hours and disco boats go up and down the river blasting music out till well past midnight. If you want a...

Not up to scratch!
from A TripAdvisor Member
Booked a double room with a view and the staff tried to palm us off with a twin room with no view. The hotel was grubby with paint chipping off in the bathroom and the refillable complimentary shower gel not refilled. The breakfast was really tasty and can't fault the location........ so it's not all bad.
Great Value for money.

Having read previous reviews for this hotel after I had made the booking I was apprehensive of what we would encounter during our two night stay on 26th & 27th August 2004. Due to a flight delay we arrived at midnight and the night duty manager immediately opened the car park and showed us where to park our hire car without complaint. We were checked in quickly and went up to our room, which although not huge was adequate, clean and and well furnished. The en-suite bathroom was also clean and well equiped and everything worked well....

Once was enough
from A TripAdvisor Member
This hotel was not worth the price we paid for the room. The room was like the low end places in the states where everything is bolted down and dumpy, with major stains on the hall carpets. Only one set of towels with a reservation for two. No extra towels in the drawer as stated in their info. The lobby, lounge, and restaurant were much nicer, so those pics on the web site were deceiving as to the quality of the rooms. One good point: restaurant breakfast was very good with prompt service. Our room was on the street side, first floor,...

Not bad at all
from A TripAdvisor Member
My mother and I stayed in this hotel on 7th july 2004. After reading some of the reviews on it i wondered if i'd made a mistake booking it! The hotel is about 7 floors high, not very pleasing to the eye (but ive not seem a moat house that is!) Excellent location for access to shops, attractions, restauraunts and bars (right off Micklegate). The room was an ample size, beds were comfortable, decoration not bad. As for the bathroom, well yes they could do with updating, but certainly werent unclean, absolutely fine for a short stay. Tip; check...

Horrible!
from A TripAdvisor Member
I stayed in this hotel for a weekend in June. The bathroom was in a terrible state - mould was growing on the tiles and the sealant was cracked. We asked to move to another room but this was equally as bad. To top it all, a disco started in the hotel at 11 pm right beneath our room - this meant we had to move rooms again. Breakfast was fine.
Some irritations
from Trouserpress
It's not the hotel's fault that the revellers in the street outside are noisy but it is their fault that the windows don't close properly and let the noise in. At weekends, the restaurant isn't big enough to accommodate guests who want breakfast at the kind of time a normal person would want breakfast so you either go early (which the hotel management "suggest") or go hungry. The rooms are OK and the location is very convenient but if you've been kept awake half the night by beersingers and then don't get any breakfast, that's not really...

nice and simple
from A TripAdvisor Member
Got a great deal on a room here on the web--a 55 GBP single. Room was quite tiny, bed was spongy, but this is a very clean and pleasant place. There was a lot of street noise from drunken students, but only around the times that pubs closed. The south side of the river is not as nice as the north side, and the Moat House is on a street that faces the backs of buildings, almost like an alley. But it's an ugly building, so just as well, I suppose. This is certainly right in town, clean, and safe, which is about exactly what I look for. Just be...

A brief visit
from A TripAdvisor Member
As an American changing $ to pounds, the Internet rate of under $150 a night was a definite bargain. I only stayed for one night but was generally impressed with the lodgings. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom facilities were more than adequate. Although I was not on the river side, views from the common areas were quite impressive. It's certainly not up to the standards of some of the "four star" hotels in London in terms of luxury, and if you thought you were getting that for 75 pounds you must have deposited your brain at...
