Wow super modern hotel. Me and my husband only stayed at this hotel for 1 night but wish it could have been longer. Hotel bedroom had a shower room with very modern fixtures and fittings. Bedroom was laminated floored and had access to the internet. Hotel was situated in... more

I was surprised to see positive comments on this page - particularly about the two things that irritated me enough about this place to bother to write a review. The breakfast - When we stayed we found what there was of it to be stale and couldn't even manage to eat any. The... more

The Ramada Encore is a wonderful, modern, clean hotel with friendly and efficient staff. My new husband and I stayed there for three nights, midweek, as our honeymoon. Ok, it's not the most romantic of hotels, but we had all the romance, scenery and history less than 5... more

This hotel is in a fantastic location, the staff are friendly and efficient that is where the good points end. The floors are laminate making for a noisy stay, the front door is locked at 10pm you have to enter via the back door which is down a poorly lit alley. There is... more

The Ramada Encore in York is a brilliant, modern hotel with great facilities. It is ideally placed as it is a quick walk to the river and the main town and there is a great chippy just up the road. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable. The facilities in the rooms... more

Great location, fantastic staff, disappointing beds
I recently stayed in one of the hotel's family rooms with my two small children and my mother. The exterior is nothing to write home about but it was about a 5 minute walk to the train station and railway museum (the reason for our visit) and despite a warning on their website about noise, we heard nothing. The interior was clean, bright and looked recently refurbished. The extra bedding needed for the sofa bed was missing but reception staff were quick to supply some. The room was quite tight with the sofa bed made up but perfectly adequate but the sofa bed itself was one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever slept on. Breakfast was reasonable with a help yourself hot and cold buffet and again the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. I would definitely recommend this hotel for location and price and despite the beds would consider staying here again.

Thank you for taking the time to place a review. I was very pleased to read that you enjoyed the hotels city centre location and found the staff to be fantastic. We have recently refurbished many aspects of the hotel and glad you did not experience any noise thanks to the extra secondary glazing. I was sorry to read you found the sofa bed to be uncomfortable. All rooms have now got new mattresses as well as brand new sofa beds since the acquistion of the hotel by Travelodge. I am very pleased that you would recommend us and choose to stay again in the future should you be visiting York.

Great value great location
Really enjoyed the stay. The location of the hotel was just perfect, about 7 minutes from the station and within a maximum of 10 minutes of all the sights of York, many being much closer. The rooms are clean, comfortable with great beds and the bathroom, modern and tasteful in design. The staff were friendly and helpful and I could not fault this hotel in any way at all. I will have no hesitation in reccomending it to others. A really good hotel and great value. Thank you.

Great Staff and a Great Hotel
We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel. Fantastic location and never have we come across such nice staff in any hotel! There was a young man to check us in and did so very quickly and was helpful with direction to car park etc. We had to pay an extra £10 to check in early but this didnt bother us as the room was so cheap to start with. We requested a hairdryer from same man on reception and he got one ever so quickly even though they were all out with guests. Hotel is INSIDE the city walls so perfect location. We didnt have any trouble with outside noise. We didnt have breakfast although you could pay extra for this. Rooms were really really nice. Brand new carpets and beds were super comfortable. AC an added bonus as other travelodges we've stayed at never had this & luxury bathrooms. Highly recommended!

I would like to thank you for your review. I was very pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you would not only stay with us again, but would recommend us to your friends. I am happy you benefited from the new carpets and new beds since being taken over by Travelodge. I am also glad that you received good customer service. The team at the hotel do their very best to ensure all guests enjoy their stay. We do hope to welcome you and your guests at Travelodge York Micklegate in the future. Kind Regards, Dean Long

Great location, but that's about all!
This hotel is in a truly great location for visiting York, but that's about where the good news stops unfortunately. We stayed for one night and whilst the room was OK for the price, the staff attitude, service and hotel check-in policies were terrible. My girlfriend checked in for us with someone who appeared to be a duty manager. He was truly disinterested and unfriendly. Equally, when we checked out, the receptionist asked if everything was ok, and then appeared equally disinterested and had no idea what to even say to us when we explained which aspects of our stay could have been better. Why bother asking for feedback when you clearly don't care? The room wasn't bad, just average. However, the shower was either hot or cold, power shower or a trickle, apparently depending on what the people in adjacent bathrooms are doing. The bed had a cheap plasticky mattress protector under the sheet which really wasn't conducive to a good night's sleep. Worst of all was the hotel's absolutely ludicrous policy to charge £10 for an early check-in! I have stayed in countless hotels over the years, and whilst some have had the policy of applying a small fee for a late check-out, I have never ever heard of anything so ridiculous as a charge for an early check-in. Using the excuse that there is no storage for bags is, frankly laughable. If there are rooms made up and available, customers should be able to check in. It costs the hotel absolutely nothing, but they choose to charge for the 'privilege'! It looks like Travelodge is the first budget hotel chain to go the same way as the budget airlines in this respect (whatever next, pay-per shower?). Cashing in on people who arrive early form the train station with bags in this way is just blatant and sad profiteering. For this reason alone, we would not choose to stay in a Travelodge again when we are after somewhere cheap and cheerful. It is such a shame that silly policies and poor staff attitude and training have ruined what could otherwise be a great budget hotel in a fantastic location, with just a couple of other quick fixes.

Thank you for reviewing the Travelodge York Micklegate. We do appreciate all feedback and use this to improve our guests satisfaction where possible. I am sorry you were not happy with your check-in and check-out experience. I expect all staff to give fantastic customer service and be as friendly as possible. I have investigated the issue you mentioned regarding the shower and have not been able to find any issues. Unfortunately I do not know which room you stayed in but I made the reception team aware to notify me of any further complaints. The mattress protectors we have are essential to avoid damage to the mattress and well as for hygiene reasons. We have good quality mattress protectors in place with guests comfort in mind. I understand that you are not happy with our Early Check-In policy. We do our utmost to inform guests of this policy before arriving at the hotel to avoid people having to carry their luggage around York with them. We cannot store bags due to limited secure storage, insurance and security reasons. I am sorry you are not happy with this. On the other hand, I am very pleased you were happy with the location of the hotel. We take pride in being a well priced budget hotel within the city walls only minutes from the main city centre hot spots. Once again, thank you for your review. Kind Regards, Dean Long

Good Location
Stayed here for a Sunday and a Monday evening last weekend. Booked it for £29 a night off the internet. It is a fabulous location, just a few minutes walk over the bridge to the Shambles, Minster etc. Plenty of places nearby for breakfast. The room was clean and bright. Sadly lacking drawer space though! Lovely double walk-in shower. Only one downside....I had phoned and was told that for £10 we could check-in from as early as 12 noon. We took the train and arrived to be told that not only was there not a room ready but that we could not leave our case there either! we got a room at 3 but had to trudge around for three hours with a case in tow! Apparently, room vacation can be as late as twelve so please bare this in mind if you are thinking of an 'early check-in!

Thank you for your review. I am happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you were happy with your room. I am sorry, however, to read that you were not able to check in early as you had planned. We do our utmost to ensure guests who wish to have an early check-in (at the extra charge) are able to do so. Unfortunately we cannot store bags for security, storage and insurance reasons. I appreciate your understanding with this policy and do hope that if you chose to stay with us in the future, we can ensure you a speedy check-in. Kind Regards, Dean Long

Comfortable, Convenient and good location
Stayed here when it was the Ramada and pleased, doesn't seemed to have changed much on transfer to Travel lodge. Our room had view of minster and was in an excellent location. Decor clean and minimal, nice bathroom. We did not stay for breakfast. I parked behind hotel but do not think much of a car park. Good value, no complaints, will visit again.
Management response from DeanLongHols 12 May 2010

Thank you for your review. I am glad that you have enjoyed your stay with us and am pleased to read that you would chose to stay with us again. With regards to parking, the hotel does not have a car park. This is just a drop off point with 3 spaces for blue badge holders. The rest of the area is not owned by Travelodge and is used by the local council. Once again, thank you for choosing to stay with us and we hope to welcome you back again in the future. Kind Regards, Gemma Long

Short stay in York
Hi stopped one night (Thurs) at the Travelodge Micklegate and found it very good for the price(£39). Very central .The car park is around the corner and is called "Tanner street car park" £10.20 for 24hrs. We tried to check in at 1pm thinking there would be a room available but was told that because we were 2hrs early then a fee of £10 was appicable!!! and they wont store your bags so we put them back in the car and went into the city. Receptionist's were polite and helpful, we had room 306 which was at the back so no noise at all. The room was ok for our needs, flat screen tv, comfy beds n walk in shower. The carpets were new n air con worked fine. My partner said that she should have taken a small mirror because there's no power points near a mirror in the room! Breakfast was £7.95 so we didn't bother with that. The weather wasn't good so our stay turned into abit of a pub crawl ! Some good pubs along the river and went to the Golden fleece near the shambles and it is quite eerie in there. It is supposed to be the most haunted pub in York. Had our eve meal at the Indian Lounge Restaurant which was very good, not too expensive except for a pint of Cobra!!! Alot of the bars in York seem to have last orders at 11pm which we found annoying but we did find one on Micklegate which was open till 2am. Beleive it or not we find time to do some shopping and a visit to the Minster!!! Overall we had a great time and would definately go back but in the summertime and would stop at the travelodge again.

Dear Guest, Thank you for telling us about your stay. I am very pleased you enjoyed your stay and the vibrant city of York. Unfortunately we cannot store bags due to limitation of storage, insurance and security reasons. Not bad for a short stay
I stayed at this hotel for one night this week, and as Travelodge had only just taken over it was for the bargain price of £10. The location cannot be faulted, it is right in the heart of York and only a short walk away from tourist attractions, restaurants/bars, the railways station etc. The only slight problem we found was the noise from the main road outside, but we still got a good night's sleep. Tthe rooms are extremely basic - the minimalist look is definitely in play; whether Travelodge have any plans to update this I don't know. For the most part it was fine, it did the job. The first thing I would like to see changed though would be to have carpets put down; the wooden floor was very cold and really contributed to the clinical feel of the room. It would be nicer if it felt a little more welcoming and homely. Also the heating unit had to be turned up high to compensate for the cold air it was blowing out.

Dear Guest, I would like to thank you for reviewing our hotel and am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us. I am very pleased to inform you that 2 floors of the hotel have now had the refurbishment completed. This includes carpeting of the rooms and secondary glazing at the front elevation. I think this does remove the 'clinical' look and makes the room more welcomning along with sorting out the noise issues. I will certainly look into the air conditioning issue you mentioned to make sure it is running on the correct program for the time of year. We look forward to welcoming you at the hotel should you visit York again, Regards, Dean

Excellent location for a York City Break
We have just returned from a weekend at the Travelodge which was formerly Ramada Encore. The location was excellent and couldn't be faulted. There was no car parking but we already knew about this and parked only a few minutes walk away at just over £10 per day. Didn't think that was expensive for such a good location. There is a lift in the hotel which is very welcome. The receptionists were very nice and helpful and tried to sort out some small problems as well as they could given the fact that the hotel has only just been taken over by the Travelodge group. The hotel rates were reasonable for the position. We were not impressed by the bed, very very hard indeed and did nothing for our backs only gave us a lot of pain. We also did not like the very noisy air conditioning system blowing out more cold than hot air even though it was up to 23 deg. We felt very cold all weekend - hopefully when the Travelodge staff get everything sorted and new furniture etc in the rooms the heating will be looked into. The quilts on the bed were very thin too. Summer weight only. The TV reception was good, just being able to access 5 channels only at present though. Shower pressure was very good. Overall we liked the hotel even though it did get noisy outside and inside the hotel at times. PLEASE PLEASE install some heating in the bathroom and carpets on the floor. The wooden floors were very cold and very noisy from the upstairs rooms. Looking forward to returning later in the year when hopefully everything should have been refurbished. If this hotel ends up like other Travelodges in the group we would be very happy. Would recommend.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. Travelodge Hotels are now near completion of a refurbishment program which included carpeting of all rooms to alleviate noise within the hotel and also secondary glazing to the front elevation to help prevent outside noise. I was sorry to read you found the bed to be uncomfortable. Two floors of the hotel have been completed with brand new beds in all rooms as well as brand new mattresses. The remaining floor is due to be completed before Easter. I am pleased you found the staff pleasant and helpful and we look would look forward to welcoming you again should you return in the Summer. Regards, Dean
