I stayed on a Friday and had booked before I saw the reviews on this site about the lack of air-conditioning. It was a warm night and the lack of air-con together with a window which opened about two inches, it was uncomfortable. Wasn't impressed with early check-in facilities. I was travelling on business and needed to leave my case and laptop at 10am, before returning in the evening. The only solution offered by reception for me and a number of others was to leave our bags in an empty meeting room, which they informed us would not be locked, so it was at our risk. The meeting room was on the ground floor and easily accessible to anyone wandering in so not a great solution. Is it too difficult to lock a door? In fairness, as hotels like this go, it's not all that bad. But Premier Travel Inns, Travelodges, Ibis Hotels and the like do tend to be cheaper and with more efficient staff. York's a great city and if you really can't find somewhere else to stay, go for it. It's clean and as long as it's not the middle of summer, you'll find it comfortable.
Fine Hotel
from Elua75
I recently stayed in the hotel for 2 nights and found it to be a comfortable base to come back to after a day walking around York. Granted there is not much storage or wardrobe space but the decor and fixtures make the hotel seem very light and airy. I was quite worried about what I would do with my car as the hotel has no car park but I needn't have worried as there was a secure overnight car park just down the road. It cost around £15 for the whole weekend which considering the car park was locked overnight and had an attendant didn't seem that bad. The only down side about the hotel is that the walls were quite thin and I could here the conversations in adjacent rooms and the lift being called. Overall I had a pleasureable stay in York and found the Hotel to be a nice place to stay
Overpriced and very hot room

The Hotel We stayed two nights in early May 2006 in this hotel. The room (on the 5th floor) was dreadfully hot and I could not sleep at all the first night. Amazingly, for a recently built "quality" hotel, they have no air conditioning. The window did not open very wide either. The staff and other guests all complained about the heat on the 5th floor, so if staying there, ask to be put on the first or second floor. There is an ice machine on the second floor, by the lift and they give you an ice bucket in the room. They also found us a floor standing fan for the second night, which improved matters. The hotel looks like a prison or an tax office from the outside, but is very conveient for the city centre (5 minutes walk) and very near to a very nice real ale pub called The Red Lion (try John Smith"Magnet" ale - very tasty). It is almost opposite a Weatherspoons as well. The furniture and styling in the hotel is very "minimalist" and spartan. We would prefer comfort every time. There are no carpets in reception, the bar or the dining room, although the room itself has a carpet. The en-suite shower is a large, glass, "walk in" and is excellent. The bed was extremely comfortable. The buffet breakfast was very good. The bacon and sausage is of high quality and the hash browns, beans, mushrooms, fried eggs, scrambled eggs are all available under heat lamps. Amazingly, there was no fresh (or even tinned) grapefruit available, no tomato juice, no grapefruit juice, only orange juice or very sweet sickly pineapple or apple juice. Surely grapefruit is an essential part of an English breakfast? The breakfast staff were average, apart from the Italian head waiter who was charismatic and friendly. The dining room decor is like a canteen in a factory or college - very echoey and noisy due to the tiled floor. The Staff My wife suffered a very nasty bout of food poisoning on our last night in the hotel (from a dodgy curry, not from the hotel food). The staff and particularly Annie, the duty manager, were excellent. They called a doctor for us, supplied clean towels, a bucket(!) and bottled water for my wife. We were allowed to stay long after normal check out time (my wife could not leave the room or be far from the loo) and even visited to see how she was. Their kindness made up for the negative aspects of the hotel to some degree, although we would not stay there again, due to the heat and the high cost of what is basically a very average hotel. Thank you again though, Annie!
Fantastic!

Due to me being in York for a 17 week training course i have been in this hotel for several weeks. I find this hotel clean, modern, the staff are very friendly and helpful and the hotel room even has free internet access (wireless). I cannot fault the hotel one bit, although we do not stay for meals, the restaurant is always busy and i havent heard anyone complaining. The only thing i would say is that the room service menu is a bit fancy for my liking (im your basic good old take away kind of person) so if you like fancy food, this is the place for u. Overall... we love staying here, its lovely and quiet and cleaners come in and change the bed and towels daily.
Very Nice and Clean

Stayed her with my friend for one night. Very close to city centre and all the sight seeing stuff. We did book a twin room but ended up in double bed, but it was a very large bed, so there were no problems really and we are good friends so it wasn't so embarassing! No real complaints about this hotel very nice reception area and comtemapry feel to it with the fake suede wall! Breakfast was the best i have in a long time and didn't need to eat until 6pm that night! We had parking too for the first day and wasn't told about needing to move the car by 11am the next day. Lucky we returned early afternoon only to find we had been clamped with a £50 charge to remove. We did complain that reception did not tell us about the request to move the car by 11am the next morning and we or i should say my friend was only charged £10 instead of £50. The clamp company are the hotel and were very understanding. Room clean and enough room to move around, although not much hanging space, but we were only there one night so didn't really need lots. I would stay here again as i found it served the purpose. Hope this review helps
Average Hotel, York

Booking hotels is always a gamble if you have little knowledge of the location. As a rule, and from previous experience, I have found any hotel with a description such as Quality in the title to be a let down. The Royal ******* Hotel. You arrive and you think there is no way the royal corgis would stay here never mind HRH. So as a last minute booking and for pure convenience of the central location we managed to get a one night Saturday booking at the ‘Quality’ Hotel. For the price this hotel is over-rated. It may have won “2 prestigious awards” but I would imagine it would probably have been Best Use Of B&Q Interior Furnishings Purchased In The January Sale. On arrival at 2pm we could not access our room, our luggage was left in an unsecured meeting room that anyone could access, and the staff seemed about as interested as a Saturday girl working in the Coop. By about 6pm the reception area was full of people on the worse side of about 15 pints hanging round the lift (well they were away for the weekend) but the staff seemed to be oblivious to this, or as to why moving them might even be benefit to other guests. On the positive side the bedroom was clean if unremarkable, the bed was comfy and as mentioned above the hotel is central. But, if you want something clean and basic you might try a new Travelodge. With the extra cash you could drink loads of beer and hang out around the lift of the ‘Quality’ Hotel. Over priced. Average hotel.
Great!

I loved this hotel, it's modern, clean, functional and not too expensive. Exactly what I want from a city centre hotel. You don't go there to visit the hotel, you go for a base to visit the city. I stay in hotels on a weekly basis and found this place refreshing. The contemporary decor and furniture in the rooms and bar were great and the purpose built walk in shower is so much better than a bath tub and shower fitment! The location is perfect to walk to York's city centre sights.
Good location. Staff trained by Basil Fawlty!!

After reading the other reviews I booked this hotel with a little trepidation. We wanted a central location within walking distance of the opera house and as it was only one night I thought it was worth taking the risk. Firstly the parking arrangements: yeah they are a bit farcical. If you can find the mythical hotel car park good luck to you. We tried to get in the one directly opposite - it doesn't take cards and as we didn't have the requisite number of £ coins to feed the machine - gave up on that one. I called the hotel for help and they kindly directed me to a car park a short distance away. This one was free after 6.00pm and all day Sunday so; something of s result. If one is disabled however one would have a problem with these arrangements. Next; booking in. The young lady was extremely pleasant and efficient. She surprised us by stating that breakfast was included in the rate, advised us we could get breakfast up to 11.00am and then gave us helpful directions to the opera house. Onto the rooms: minimal is an overstatement and they're also very small. In truth the Travelodge rooms, at two thirds of the price, are probably two thirds bigger! Yes the showers are very modern and it only takes a degree in engineering to work out how to use them. After a really enjoyable evening in York we got back to the hotel around midnight. The bar is 24 hours (at the night managers discretion) and we experienced efficient and friendly service into the wee small hours. Things, though, did degenerate the following morning when we went down to breakfast. The guy on the door of the dining room advised us that we could get breakfast on a two for one deal (£15.00) so I pointed out we'd been told breakfast was in the rate. He looked puzzled but showed us to our table. The dining room was extremely busy but we got toast and coffee fairly quickly. There was, however, very little cooked food layed out, a few morsels of scrambled eggs, some baked beans and a few hash browns. We were then approached by another member of staff who advised that breakfast wasn't in the rate. Again I protested that we'd been told it was and, anyway, I wasn't going to shell out £15.00 for a cup of coffee and toast! Shortly thereafter more staff arrived at our table again looking for payment!! This was getting ridiculous so I stated we'd pay for the coffee and toast, got up and took our coffee into the reception area. There then followed a scene akin to the episode of Fawlty Towers entitled "The Hotel Inspectors"!!The duty manager approached us with wringing hands and a manner so apologetic I felt sorry for her. She explained there had been a terrible mix up and, although breakfast was not included in the rate, we had been wrongly advised otherwise and breakfast was now on the house!!! Back into the dining room we traipse and, hey presto, there's food aplenty!! All in all a bit of a rollercoaster ride with this place. It's well located, functional and clean. The staff though, need a bit more training!!
You must experience this!

This place is amazing! I have stayed at other Quality hotels but nothing like this. It is new, modern, airy, and has to be seen. It is located inside the city walls, close to all the amenities, and ideal for shopping, nightlife, and seeing York. The car parking is not ideal as they only have a few spaces - but that is a few more than most city centre hotels, and the £10 per night charge is cheaper than the public car parks. Tip - don't shout and swear at the staff about the car parking - it's not their fault! (Another customer did this whilst we were there). If you only go to one place this year, go to the Quality Hotel in York!
This hotel is in an ideal location, not too close to the city centre, but in easy walking distance. We thought that the hotel parking was going to be a problem as there are only limited spaces for an additional £5 a night. There was no room for us, so we had to park... more
