surprisingly terrible
I had stayed here before and the first time was very good (service, room, ect), the second not so good (room terrible) and last time terrible. The main complaint was the utterly dreadful service: I was here with family and we ordered a cream tea. Staff eventually appeared with a dirty hospital style teapot full of stewed tea and stated that the scones would be a while as they were "defrosting in the microwave". After a while they presnted us with a bill for about ten pounds a head (still no frozen scones)at which point we cancelled our... more
Wonderful location, spacious rooms
I have stayed at the Monkbar twice now. Both times I was pleased with the service, rooms and food. I found the rooms of a comfartable temperature, the beds are large and comfortable. The breakfast is buffet style with toast, croissants, and cooked English. The restaurant menu is lovely, and the bar very pleasant. If you want to get out of the bar you can take your drink into the lounge area round the corner from reception, where there are mega-comfortable sofas. The location is excellent, being a stones throw from the Minster.... more
Not that impressed
The location is pretty good, it's only a short walk to the City Centre and York is a beautiful city, but I wasn't impressed with the hotel. My bathroom smelled of the drains and I had to keep the fan on all the time to get rid of the smell. The window wouldn't stay open so I had to wedge it with a newspaper, there is no face flannel in the bathroom( you have to ask at reception) and when I accidentally knocked the lampshade above the bed a large amount of dust came flying off it. I would have asked to change rooms but I was aware the... more
Mixed Feelings
We stayed at the hotel in August - no air conditioning and like a previous review mentioned, there is considerable traffic noise even with the windows shut (not double glazed). The location is great for those who have not brought a car - the walk into York was literally 2 minutes. The room was clean, modern but a little basic - condiments were not replaced after the first day, however, I am sure if I had asked for more I would have received more stocks, as the staff were friendly and helpful. A plus was the restaurant the menu was... more
avoid race week !
Stayed just the one night. super location and free parking in York is a bonus ! Great breakfast selection. comfortable and spacious room. However we had a street view and in August the option was to have the window open with all the traffic noise that entailed or suffer an overly warm room. Bar contained a real mix of types but for me - i'd avoid it when the races are on - unless that's what you've come for. Batteries in TV remote were dead, but reception replaced them and were very friendly and helpful. I would happily... more
Excellent location
We stayed here for one night, the hotel staff were very friendly. The hotel is situated next to the wall and a short distance to the centre of York. The breakfast was lovely and the rooms were very clean. We had a room away from the road so it was quiet. We would definately stay here again.
overpriced for what it is
My room was attractive and comfortable, but the hotel is located on a very busy street just outside the old city gates--a convenient location for walking, but a lot of traffic noise. I was very disappointed in the included breakfast; the hot food was all on steam trays (rubbery fried eggs) and the selection was limited. I stayed one night in July, 2004.
Nice room, Great Breakfast
Hotel lovely. room was nicely decorated and clean. Only fault was I kept banging my head on the sloping ceiling & we couldn't get the velux windows to shut properly. Breakfast was great, with plenty of choice including sliced fruit, meats and cheeses and the hot breakfast buffet was to die for! Location of the hotel was fine & we found a superb Italian restaurant round the corner, but you need to get there early! Close to most attractions & the original no gimmick ghost tour was a scream!! We'll be booking later this... more
Take earplugs!
I booked this hotel online as it looked great on a travel website. It was pretty close to everything I wanted to be near to in York, but I would advise taking earplugs if you are staying at this hotel at a weekend. Some of the non-smoking rooms are directly above the hotel lobby & since it was near Christmas, there was a "party night" going on in the main function suite the 1st night I was there. The music stopped just after midnight, but up till then it was ear-splitting. There was a notice at reception informing us that the function was... more
Fantastic Position, Generally what you'd expect
This hotel is in a fantastic position for sight seeing around York. The staff were very helpful and friendly and generally tried hard to help you enjoy your stay. The hotel layout and rooms are pretty generic as you'd expect and meets all the minimum requirements. It is rather expensive for what it is, but then all hotels in York seem to be over priced. In winter take a cardigan! All the common area's, bar, restaurant, reception were freezing!! Ask how near to the disco (lots of weddings and parties here) your room is. It'll go... more
