Sep 2007, Miss E Smith

Stayed here at the weekend whilst I was booked on a conference and had a really enjoyable time. The conference was in the Ebor suite which was great. The rooms are lovely and clean and they are also decorated to a high standard. The food was wonderful and the staff are... more

really grotty!!!!
Luckily for us this was a one night stay - this is a really dated property - in fact it is like a very cheap roadside motel! The room we had was very old and smelt damp. The toilet did not flush properly and the bedroom carpet had a large stain where the bath had obviously leaked. There was mould all round the window frames. The room was freezing as they had left the heating turned off and when we turned it up it took hours for the room to warm up. The bathroom did not have heating at all!! (January in the UK!!!!) The furniture is old and shabby and needs replaced - the wardrobe doors had been removed but not replaced. York is fantastic and is well worth the trip - just find somewhere else to stay and make sure you visit Betty's!
Good rates available. 30 min walk to City. Friendly Staff. Excellent Breakfast.
Had dozens of business stays in York and always dismissed this place due to bland structure so what a surprise. Very very friendly staff in restaurant that serves an excellent breakfast (I don't say that often) that is both top quality and plentiful. Nice rooms. No need for lunch! 30 minute walk or short bus ride to City Centre. Horse race track is at rear so ideal for runners. Set back from main road so rooms are generally quiet as well as pleasant (I guess there must be exceptions). Rates vary considerably. No chance of a deal on race days!! Possibly now my 1st choice of hotel in York.
Not at all up to Holiday Inn standards!
I stayed one night at this hotel on my way north this summer, and was almost horrified at the condition of the room- it was not exactly unclean, but the shelves were literally falling down and everything was in poor condition. Meal was so-so. However, other members of my party said they loved their rooms (and some of these people are very snooty about hotels.) The room was of a fairly large size, so this hotel would be good for families. I have compared the relative qualities of American hotel chains in US/Canada/UK, and the foreign counterparts are almost always the equal of the domestic hotels, but this was very disappointng- and I just needed a place to spend the night!
Not much going for this place
I stayed at the Holiday Inn York for 2 nights and was dissapointed to find the hotel some way outside the city centre, however this was not a major problem as bus services were frequent. Upon check in, my wife and I were greeted by sullen unfriendly staff who barely seemed to understand english. We were ushered to our room just as soon as the hotel had taken an 'autorisation' of my credit card. Upon arrival in the room we found it to be a Twin Room (2 single beds) rather than the double we had booked. We called reception and explained the problem. An hour or so later we were given a double room (a double bed and a sofa bed). We were realtively happy with this (however being Priority Club - Holiday Inn's Loyalty card - members had expected better!). We went out to see the sights in York and came back to the hotel at around 5 pm. We entered our room to find that the sofa bed had been made up by the housekeepers. I called front desk to find out why. I was told that as we had booked a Twin and were in a double they had kindly made the sofa bed up for us - We had booekd a double, not a twin...So we asked to have the sofa bed taken down and the extra bedding taken away, which was done with much huffing and puffing. Dinner was expensive at the hotel and the staff were sullen and unfriendly. The hotel looks very dated, and the bathroom in our room was tiny, the towels stained and the whole pace seemed very shabby, I will not be back. At check out we were served by an asian woman who I have to say is one of the most unfriendly person I have come across! She was miserable and tried to add additional charges (Taxes) onto the bill. I complained and the duty manager came to see me and she said no extra charges should have been charged and refunded my card. The place is a shambles! Stay elsewhere!
Adequate for business stay
This is a typical bland chain hotel. I stayed one night there on business. The reception staff were efficient enough. The room was clean and reasonably spacious. The bathroom was tiny, although it did have a bath. The room was also devoid of those little extras such as a trouser press, A4 writing paper and a guide to the hotel's facilities. The absence of the latter may be because the hotel has little to offer in terms of facilities - there is no swimming pool or even a gym. Breakfast was ok, but nothing to rave about. All in all, I would describe this hotel as an adequate hotel for an overnight business trip. There are other better options in York however.
Best Brekkie in York.
City centre hotels and B&B's can be fairly expensive in York during the summer months. We wanted a 1 night stay - plan was to arrive in town, dump our bag and have a few beers and a curry then do some sights the next day. Therefore the hotel was somewhere to sleep that's all. I booked a night stay in August for 2 which included breakfast for less than £35 a head. There's ample parking if you are travelling into York by car, with easy access to the hotel from the carpark. Check-in was fast and efficient and the room was typical Holiday Inn, clean, comfortable and simple. Bathroom provided a hot powerful shower with plenty of clean towels. You can walk into the City Centre (which we did) this took 30 - 40 minutes without rushing. You can also get the fantastic No4 bus (The FTR) outside the hotel which is a futuristic bendy affair with flat panel TV's and on-board self service ticket machine (£5 return). These are state-of-the-art articulated vehicles that look like trams but run on rubber wheels and use the road. The bus will drop you right outside the station. After a late night out full of beer and a decent curry a taxi ride back from the city centre was £9 On our return a visit to the bar for a nightcap was met with friendly staff who were eager to help. Shame the prices are sky high compared to city centre bars! A good nights sleep ensued followed by the highlight of a Holiday Inn stay - the breakfast! Again friendly staff seated us and brought coffee, there's plenty of choice: from fruit, cheeses, bread and muffins through to the full English cooked plateful. Well worth the money and I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, especially if I was in the car.
Good value for money
Stopped for the one night whilst en route with my wife and two children. The hotel is located close to the racecourse and is about a 5-10 minute drive from the city centre. It's a very clean hotel with all the usual chain hotel amenities. We stayed for breakfast which was a buffet style and was excellent. The food was hot and plentiful. My only comment on the negative side is that it looks a bit dated on the outside and a few scrapes and dents on the corridors, however, the bedroom looked fine and the bed was very comfortable. Booked direct on the internet and paid £75 for four people with breakfast, which for York, is a bargain.
Excellent
What a really nice place .... !!... 18 of us stayed at the Holiday Inn , in May . The rooms where bright , airy and very clean . All of the staff where well mannered and couldnt do enough to make are stay there as comfortable as possible . The food was really good and you got plenty , some times more than you could eat . We will definaltly be staying there again .. well worth the price .
A Good Hotel
This is a good hotel. The rooms were clean, however we found some of the plates and cutlery to be dirty on a couple of occasions. The room was a good size, but some room was taken up by a table which seemed to serve no sensible purpose whatsoever. Internet access was provided. There was one plug socket above the desk/sideboard, but this was occupied by a plug with 'do not unplug' written on it. So, in order to use the fan provided, you had to unplug the TV if it was to be located where ot could make any difference. The room was very warm; the windows were open for most of our stay. The hotel is very conveniently placed to get to York - if you're walking you just turn right onto Tadcaster Road and keep going in a straight line. There is a good selection of pubs nearby, our favourite was the Fox and Roman. The hotel's own restaurant was good, but pricey; £5 for a theatre-ice-cream-esque size carton is a bit steep. We would return.
