I booked this hotel for a night to meet a friend coming up from London. We decided to meet halfway in York. The staff were friendly, however when I arrived, I placed my things on the bed and was appalled to notice green dried in snot from someones nose on the cover. It... more

Titch
I think this hotel had very nice staff with wobbly food I was in a room of two and the other bed was just two matterasses squashed together, So I could not get into the crammed bathroom also I had to push the door with all my might to get inside the 2 inch room. In the nights I could hear all noises from in the hotel making me have an ucomfortable sleep and waking up at 6 in the morning feeling I was having a hangover! Over all I expect to go to a different hotel next time !
Good Family Run Hotel!
Me and my Boyfriend stopped here for New Years Eve, and found it a great little hotel. Our room was very 1980's looking but this didnt bother us as we wasnt intending in staying in the room all the time! It could do with a good re-modernising but other than that the food was great and the family of owners were extremley nice. I would recommend it for a cheap weekend away.
Best cheap hotel in York
This is a great little hotel. We had a wonderful room on the ground floor, had an excellent dinner and the owner even honored a request to make Yorkshire Pudding so my husband could try it. It's true that the rooms are a little dated, but I thought this added to the character of the hotel. The bathroom was tiny, but most British bathrooms are small. If you're looking for a luxury hotel then this is not your place. If you're looking for a great 2 plus star with loads of character, friendly service, good food and a reasonable price tag then stay here!
1980s Chintzy Time Warp Hotel
The Holgate Hill Hotel is a throwback to the 1980s and beyond. The rooms are so chintzy and small you could be forgiven for thinking that you were in a museum. The TV must have been no younger than 1980, without a remote control, it reminded of one my parents had as a child. There was no hot water in the 2 mornings I stayed there! When I complained, the staff simply suggested that I leave the (woefully underpowered) shower on for 10 minutes. The staff were utterly uninterested in the customers and this coupled with the hotel's laughable decor and comfort means that the Holgate Hill Hotel is best avoided.
Not for me!
Have just returned from the Holgate Hill time warp! Rooms are frighteningly dated; for example the TV was so old it had a sliding button to adjust volume and no remote. So dated it’s untrue and for the price I would suggest spending c.£30 extra and staying at The Grange where I had a few drinks and seemed top-notch! If you can get the Holgate cheap then go for it but at the £70 (that I paid) it’s nowhere near a value pick
nice traditional hotel
Stayed here in feb 07 for 2 nights. Hotel was clean, warm and comfy plenty of choice at breakfast and freshly cooked. Now to the minus points, the room we were in was on the ground floor and very much in need of a makeover and in the company of some noisy neighbours due to the paper thin walls and ceiling!! apart from that a very enjoyable stay.
A friendly hotel
Have just come back from a weekend in York where we stayed two nights at this hotel. The staff were courteous, friendly and helpful. The rooms were comfortable and clean. The lounge and bar areas were good to relax in. The food both for breakfast and dinner was excellent- well served, presented and tasteful with good portions. Would highly recommend and it is only a short bus or even walk away from the middle of York. Our thanks for a good weekend.
keep away
I stayed for one night and the room advertisment promised a cosy room- what i got was a cold room, with tea and coffee making facilities- complete with half eaten biscuits from the previous occupiers, a bathroom that had a very strong damp smell that was difficult to getout of my nose also some sort of fan or pump which started up at 6.45am sunday morning which not only woke me up but was so noisy i had to leave the room early and sit in the lounge to wait for breakfast time - other people at breakfast were also commenting about this noise thank goodness i only stayed for one night!
Avoid at all costs.
We stayed here at the beginning of December for a weekend of Christmas shopping in York. What an awful dump. We were definately treated as second class citizens - too many Christmas party`s going on at the expense of the residents. We were rushed through dinner both evenings to make way for the non-resident party`s. You couldn`t get near the bar. I think it is probably heading for a crisis- there was one tiny cheese board that went round the dining room. None of the cutlery or crockery matched. Breakfast was a farce-not enough staff to cope with the number of guests and the owner was too stressed to even wish anyone Good morning. There was no separate residents bar or lounge and the noise was incredible upto 3a.m. The rooms were shabby and the whole hotel was tired and rundown. Not an experience to be repeated.
