Holgate Hill Hotel

I booked the Hotel for my partners 30th Birthday and wanted something special. My first initial contact with the Holgate Hill Hotel was on booking via the telephone. The staff member was very helpful and informative and my booking was dealt with very efficiently with confirmation and receipts received by return. I looked forward to my stay.
On arrival in York, once again the staff were very helpful and accurate with directions from the train station, and on arrival at the hotel we received a very warm welcome, however, I was very disappointed with the following service, room & breakfast.
Accommodation: I had booked a room with a Jacuzzi bath for my partner to relax in and enjoy, but it had not been thoroughly cleaned (my partner had to rinse it out thoroughly before use). The television was not tuned in properly and there was no remote control for it. A couple of light bulbs were not working. The sheet (although you could tell it was laundered) had a large stain on it so we slept with just the blanket, and the mattress was perfectly firm one side, but completely flat the other resulting in back complaints from my partner.
NB: Be careful of the door at the top of the stairs... it opens towards you with little room for manoeuvre without falling down the staircase!!
Service: On commenting on the above the next morning before breakfast the staff member seemed vaguely interested but did not offer much in way of an apology, however after breakfast a tray was brought up to our room with two small waters, two bags of Walkers crisps and two small chocolate biscuits on it as way of compensation. Unfortunately I was not happy with this as our room had cost £190.00 for two nights stay, with the trays contents being worth a maximum of approx £4.00. (Oh and neither my partner or I eat Crisps!)
Breakfast: Well what can I say... Appalling. The waitress who served us was not very friendly or welcoming, there was no smile or "good morning", the breakfast was served on a small side plate, the toast (when it finally arrived) was cold and the sausage served was hardly big enough to be a chipolata!
Unfortunately myself and my partner did not have an enjoyable stay (albeit a memorable one) at The Holgate Hill Hotel and certainly will not be returning. I felt the disappointment with the Hotel ruined what would have been an enjoyable birthday surprise for my partner.
