Oct 2010, robbo

I recently stayed at the Black bull at Escrick on the 18th october 2010 for 4 nights i booked with late rooms.com the price was £35 a night but if i booked direct it would have been £49.95 I`m glad i went through a booking agent as i was not impressed with the room old and filthy carpet room small toilet smelt when flushed very dated needs updating the owner are fairly new only been in since august they have done the down stairs bar restuarant very well the food is very good and reasonable priced but as for a single person dont bother booking. didnt see the rooms they said they had refubished but looking at the carpets on the landing i could`nt see anything that had been upgraded AA 4 Star more like AA 2 star single people BEWARE room 1

Shabby chic
5 / 10
May 2010, prealsa

Bit shabby chic decor and quite surly staff, though not all but the surly ones stood out more then the pleasant ones, food very reasonable and weel presented with house wine at £6.50 a bott so good value, rooms very comfortable and clean, though the sink plug didnt work and wasnt rectified after reporting but wasnt a disaster just an aside, nice and quiet and well positioned for the park and ride to town and central to all attractions, the pub itself was a bit shabby and well worn and has seen better days the accomodation was excellent.

  • Advice: though 2.5 miles from York it felt central
  • Good For: City Breaks

We've just spent yet another pleasant stay at the Black Bull. The staff as always were pleasant, friendly and attentive. Nothing was too much bother even though they were under extreme pressure from working long shifts to cover absences.
Room was clean and has all you need during your stay.
The food is reasonably priced and we've not had a bad meal there yet, there was plenty provided for breakfast and if anything ran short it was no bother to the staff to bring more supplies. Daily newspapers provided but you need to be up early on a Sunday to get one!
The location is ideal, if you're feeling energetic its not a bad walk into York, though the hill on the return journey can be torture if you've spent the day touring York. The bus service is regular and the stops are located close to the hotel, a park and ride facility is just minutes away. Its close enough to the A64 to be able to tour further afield without too much bother.
In the summer months its an ideal place to unwind, there are ample sitting areas outside of the hotel to sit and enjoy your meal and a drink in the sun!
We are looking forward to our next visit in August.

Myself and my husband have stayed in this hotel several times, we intend to return first week February 2008 as it is welcoming, friendly and quick service, nothing is too much trouble.
We would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. Plus its only about ten minutes by car to nearest car park then you can go straight to city centre.

Stayed at the Black Bull for 6 nights...
10 / 10
Jan 2008, Mr J. J. Smart

Stayed at the Black Bull for 6 nights over the Christmas period 21st - 27th Dec 2007.
Checking in was swift and easy.
Our room was spacious clean and tidy, with everything we needed for a very pleasant stay.
Staff were very friendly and although a very busy festive period nothing was too much trouble.
Food in the hotel bar was good and very reasonable.
This was our second visit to the Black Bull this year and have enjoyed both visits and have no fears in recommending it to others.

Just returned from a two night break,...

Dec 2007, Mr A Dunn

Just returned from a two night break, you get what you pay for. Having paid £119for two rooms for two nights including complimentary breakfast for a party of three, I feel was excellent value.
Staff attentive and respectful, check-in went without a hitch.
We ate in the hotel bar, great choice and value and were not disappointed, drinks reasonable and plenty of offers/promotions on drinks.
Bar/lounge had welcoming feel and good atmosphere.
We would certainly recommend and will return.
Check-out was nothing more than depositing a key in a box on exit, car was safe and secure as any other hotel we have stayed in both home and abroad.
As stated earlier, you get what you pay for, if you want five star then book five star and pay the price for this. Simple, clean and comfortable with the option to eat at the inn or go elsewhere.

Stayed at the Black Bull for 2...
5 / 10
Aug 2006, Mr M L

Stayed at the Black Bull for 2 nights, Friday and a Saturday. Hotel fine, rooms clean and tidy, food in hotel bar very good. But breakfast time was a nightmare, you have to ask for everything, any bread for toast, any milk, any hot water, any cups, tea bags etc. The staff were friendly, but over worked, poor Anton works from 6am until 11.30 pm daily.
I have stayed at innkeepers lodges before, but will never stay here again or ever recommend it, because most of the cars that park at the rear of the hotel get there windows smashed, even though security camera's are in place, this problem lets the hotel down, and spoils your holiday.
We checked out and moved to the York city center Travelinn, near the railway station, 100% better, and your car is a lot safer.

Oct 2005, Not Specified

The room itself is good - clean, and the bed is comfortable. However, the 'hotel' is a building at the back of a pub, and the 'hotel check in' is the pub bar. It isn’t very pleasant to enter a smoky, rather down-market, bar with all your bags, and stand around waiting for the barman to check you in.
The breakfast is a disaster, and is provided in the same bar, which by now smells of last night’s drink and cigarettes. A very adequate hotel room is badly let down by its association with the pub.
