We have used this Lodge before, but...

Oct 2007, happyhols

We have used this Lodge before, but this visit was disappointingly grim.
Ground floor room, facing a hedge. It was clean but shabby and not very inviting.
The room showed signs of age e.g. some of the hangers were missing, the desk was scratched, the upholstery was stained, the bathroom was dated, the grouting grey and the seal on the bath was damaged.
The bed was very soft so it was uncomfortable and we did not get much sleep. The night was cold but the room was warm - had to open the window to freshen up the air at one point! Shame the bathroom was like Siberia.
Very basic and spartan accommodation: it felt as if the chain has cut everything to the bone now. There was a notice warning that the towel rail might be hot - fat chance as there is no power supply: a tatty cardboard notice on the desk justifies the economies and claims that hot towel rails burn people. Yes, but they also dry damp towels and warm chilly bathrooms.
Only available hot food was in the Little Chef which was dreary, with a restricted menu (No steak or gammon) and poor customer relations. what is wrong with 'hello'? we were greeted with 'there's a twenty minute wait for food'.
Doubt that we will stop there again.

Booked as a stopover on our way to...

Booked as a stopover on our way to the West Country.
An interesting location as we had to use the 'old' Severn Crossing (Bridge) which was closed very shortly afterwards due to high winds.
We had a pleasant welcome and were allocated a spacious and very clean room on the first floor, with a good view of the car park. The storm got worse and this was slightly nerve wracking as the high winds meant that some branches blew down in the night. It was too dark to see what was happening but we could hear it!
The Travel Lodge is quite exposed and felt cold. Our room took a while to warm up even with the heater going full blast, and the bathroom stayed cold throughout the night because the bathroom radiator is permanently switched off. I realise that this saves the chain money, but in the bleak midwinter I think it makes good business sense to keep the place warm!
It was so wet that we actually drove down to the Little Chef restaurant which was warm and welcoming. We had excellent service and the staff checked that we were not travelling far as the Bridge was closed.
The mattress was so soft that it felt like a waterbed, I had to camp out on the sofa before I could sleep!
I realise that the weather was outside Travel Lodge's control but we felt cold the whole time. I would have gladly given them an extra £1 to have the bathroom warm enough to use in comfort!
