Some of the reviews on this site set The Vermont in a bad light, so I thought I would try and give a balanced view of my stay there. The room was fairly compact but not cramped, the furniture and décor was all very fresh and of high quality. The bed was very comfortable, but the TV was poorly located being on a low stand which meant it was tricky to lie on the bed and watch it. The room was very well equipped with an iron & board, and three telephones. The bathroom was clean and tidy, and yes the bath really does fill in 90 seconds! The shower was great: controllable, constant temperature, high pressure. The window to my room was a little dirty, and I could see that the windows of rooms opposite were dirtier still. However the windows were TRIPLE glazed and not single as I have read elsewhere. This meant that when fully closed there was hardly any noise from outside; unfortunately this was a hot night and there was only a small fan to move the air and no air conditioning. So it was a choice between being hot or putting up with the noise from outside! The staff were all very friendly and hospitable. Strangely the lift always stops at floor 6 (where the main reception is located) which is a nuisance if you need to go between floors 10 and 1 every time. The minibar snacks are pricey - £3.50 for a small bag of nuts! You do have to leave your car keys with reception which I was not particularly comfortable with. I did not eat in the hotel so cannot comment on the food. The bar drinks are reasonably priced for a city centre hotel and the service is very attentive. All in all it is a reasonable 4-star hotel and I would consider staying here again, primarily for the convenience of being right in the heart of the city.

Moonlight At Vermont

this was the special offer we went on it was champagne and canapes, three course dinner and wine and then room and breakfast for one hundred and sixty five pounds. we went for a wedding anniversary I asked for a room upgrade they couldnt give us one though as there was a wedding party in. We had room 1010 with a view of the Tyne and the Gateshead skyline to the left we could see the Sage and Tynebridge and the Blinking Eye Bridge. The room was a double room and had a double bed, seating area and small table, desk, tv and dvd player. As well as bathroom with a bath that filled up in 90 seconds! Complimentary 7pm check out (only on Sundays), over night shoe shine (that had fantastic results on my husbands work shoes!), bed tun down service, and fitness area. The fitness area is not staffed so you need to know what you are doing to go on the many machines. there is also a tanning capsule however I tried 3 times to use it and it didnt work-the tanning lights didnt come on. Becareful when having dinner though they slap supplements on many of the choices and if you ask for water they charge you for it instead of just giving you tap water. We had a lovley afternoon tea, three types of sandwiches, two types of scones, various jarred jams, cream and four different cakes. One afternoon tea will feed two though. All the staff were very helpful although some had strange ideas on what was "acceptable" hair styles and makeup for a hotel The only let down this hotel had was the lift was very slow-sometimes waiting for 5-10 minutes for it to arrive. The Vermont is just opposite the old court rooms and is just 10 mins walk from the Monument in Newcastle or les than 5 mins down to the Quayside. Its a great hotel we will be going back-definately.
Best Position - Best Staff
from pablot
Regular guest at The Vermont - easliy the best position of any hotel in Newcastle. Bad reviews are way off course. I always have a great stay. Helpfull staff, good food and parking at the door...what more do you want. It's also nice to stay in a hotel that is not a clone of all the others. If you want BORING.....stay at the Hilton and spend an extra 1/4 of an hour walking in to the centre. Your choice but I would always stay at the best established hotel in Newcastle.
Horrid!

****Fantastic****

I recently stayed the Vermont Hotel and found the experience to be amazing. The facilities may not be the greatest in the world, but the staff more than make up for this - friendly, helpful and informative with some cracking smiles. Such a delight to not have to worry about car as this task was taken care of by the concierge from the moment I arrived until I walked out the door and it was sat waiting for me. The food in the Bridge Restaurant was gorgeous and well presented. Served by friendly local and internaional staff. The package we were on included dinner in the rate as well as a bottle of champagne which we chose to have in our room rather than with the meal. After dinner we enjoyed a great night out in Newcastle. Thanks again to the concierge and front of house staff who know exactly the right spots to go to. Loved the Quayside!! Next time in the 'Toon', I'll make my way straight to the Vermont.
Overpriced, overrated, and significantly understaffed
from Newcastleunited
We've now stayed at the Vermont for six straight years, and this past stay will definitely be our last. I tried to overlook the negative comments from the previous reviews, because we had stayed at least 7 to 10 days for the past few years...but the hotel has declined significantly in recent times. We've just returned from another 7-night stay and have found that all of the staff from previous years have "jumped ship" to work nearby at other more worthy hotels. After a few years of staying at a hotel of this rating you begin to expect to find consistencies, such as the staff's services. During this trip it was rare, really rare to ever find a concierge anywhere in site. We dragged our own bags from the taxi upon arriving at the hotel, as well as departing for the airport. The reception area (check-in) was often void of any staff, until someone would finally appear from the back office, or there would be 2-3 of the staff simply sitting in the lobby area watching television instead of being ready to assist the guests. Normally there is a gas-lite fire in the fireplace in the lounge area, but this trip it was necessary to ask the staff to please light the fire every evening. In order to get a drink in the lounge, you had to go to the front desk and ask if anyone could come fix a drink. They would then call the restaurant and have someone come over eventually to fix a drink. The staff complained about the fact that they were understaffed, and having to take on roles and tasks that were typically for other workers, and many of the staff were performing double or triple roles at the height of their holiday season when the hotel was 100% booked. The room was as a prior person said was impossible to see out of the window due to the dirt on the non-insulated glass made the room seem bleak. The mattresses are in desperate need of replacement as we were staying on the top floor in one of the nicest rooms, and yet we rolled to the center of the beds because the mattresses were so "tired". The food was significantly overpriced for the quality in comparison with prior stays at this hotel. We had to track someone down to even take our food orders as the staff was operating with as few people as possible during a peak holiday season. It's my understanding from talking to people in the area that the hotel has gone through many managers, and staff changes. It's unfortunate that it has not maintained it's prior image as it was previously a very enjoyable place to stay. We intend to continue to stay in the city for at least a week every year, but this past visit will be our last at the Vermont. From everyone we're talked to in the area, our stays in the future will either be at the Copthorne or the new Hilton that are both within walking distance of this hotel and both have views of the river (many members of this hotel's prior staff have now relocated to both of these hotels). If you want to overpay for a hotel, and be given inferior service then you will not be disappointed with your stay at this hotel.
ok for a short stay - miss not having a pool.
from A TripAdvisor Member
for a short busness trip the hotel is fine, the conceirge knows his stuff and finding good bars in the city was easy with his knowlege. i did miss not having a pool to hand and the restauraunt although nice produced a peice of art when quantity and quality was more the order of the day. blackpudding bread roll was superb so i asked for two. manic jazz music in the bar and restaurant made me seek out other bars so bare that in mind vermont management.
Had a wonderful experience of the Vermont
from A TripAdvisor Member
I got married at the Vermont a couple of weeks ago and i'm really not sure where all these 1 star reviews are coming from. The day was wonderful, the food was gorgeous and staff were absolutley lovely. We had a complimentary suite on the 10th floor and it was a beautiful room, we had a lovely lounge and dining area, a huge bathroom and a lovely bedroom. The best thing about it was the amazing views out across Newcastle which were lovely at night and especially wonderful at sun rise. A lot of my family had normal double rooms and although they didn't have the views their rooms were fine, reasonably large and clean which is all they wanted really. Breakfast was lovely, a huge choice of pastrys and cereal, then you could have omlettes, full english, or pancakes with fruits and syrup to name a few choices. I think the room prices were quite reasonable considering it's located right in the centre of Newcastle.
SHOCKING!

I wish that I had listened to the reviews! This Hotel is overpriced, terrible staff, terrible rooms, terrible meals. My £180,000 car was taken off me upon my arrival. I was told that I could not keep my own car keys? If i wanted them back I would have to ask the porter at the front desk! I saw that my car moved several times from its original parking bay! I demanded the keys back and I was told that I could not have them until I checked out the following morning? As a result I left there and then! Will not be back!

The Vermont Hotel is very well situated next to the Castle and right on the edge of the main central shopping area. The rooms are clean and well equipped, but I found the price to be a little too high for the size of room and the comfort level. There is a train line... more
