Travelodge Newcastle Central Hotel Reviews

Sep 2008, Miss Duncan

Having stayed at Travel Lodge on many an occasion, we booked a couple of nights in Newcastle thinking that this would be a safe bet. On arriving at the hotel the reception area was drab and the floor very dirty. After what seemed like an eternity we arrived at our room... more

Basic but can be a bargain, just avoid the food
My family use this hotel whenever we visit my daughter who as at University in Newcastle. It is often possible to get a room for £26 per night for all three of us, out of season and at that price you can't expect much. The location is great, just one block up from the river and with lots of good restaurants close by. There is also a Tesco Express at the bottom of the street, which is very handy. The rooms are the usual basic Travelodge standard with a double bed and a sofa that has a pull out bed below. Towels are supplied but soap is not. If staying for more than one night you will find the cleaning to be below par, if done at all. My wife used one of the cups and this was not washed or changed the following day and the toilet was not cleaned. We use this hotel purely for the convenience to my Daughter's flat and for the excellent out of season price but I would not choose to stay here if I was on a conventional city break, it simply provides a place to sleep and shower. The one thing I would warn against is the bar/restaurant. We had always avoided it in the past but being in Newcastle for Valentine's Day and being unable to book a table for 7 people anywhere for that night we decided to give it a try - the first and last try. The food is very basic and bears little resemblance to the menu photos. The restaurant was fairly quiet when we ordered at 19.05 hrs but it took 55 minutes to get two pie and chips and two burger and chips, oh and they also brought a starter after we had already received the main course! All of the food was from the freezer and only required deep frying or being chucked in the oven, I hate to think how long you would have to wait if they were busy. Shortly after we complained about the long wait, we overheard the barmaid/waitress commenting to here colleague that "this is the Travelodge, not the Hilton, what do they expect". Well, actually what I expect is first of all to be informed if the food will be delayed and secondly to receive a basic straight from freezer to fryer meal in no more than 25 minutes and an apology for the delay would not go amiss. The problem is that you have to pay up front and they then have you over a barrel as you can hardly walk out when you have already paid. It also seems convenient that their Credit Card system was broken and we had to pay cash, apparently the hotel reception cannot accept Credit Card payments for food taken in the restaurant 50 feet away in the same room!! To sum up, the Travelodge is okay for an overnight stay or if visiting friends and relatives in the neighbourhood but don't eat there. Breakfast is £7.50 for the buffet but it is pre-prepared and you can get much fresher better meals in Blakes on Grey Street or in a new cafe at the top of City Road opposite the Holy Jesus Hospital by the underpass.
Fantastic Value
Having just returned from a three night stay at the Travelodge Newcastle I would heartily recommend it to anyone looking for budget accomodation near the city centre. Having secured the room for £29 per night my husband and I opted for the buffet breakfast and were pleasantly surprised-very good value indeed. Admittedly we stayed during the week when it was quiet but the hotel lived up to all our expectations and we will definitely be back! Barbara Crawford Coleraine N.Ireland
very good value
2nd stay at this travelodge. Stayed on a sunday night and paid £19. No complaints about the room, basic but clean. Staff helpful. Noisy between 12.30and 01.00 with people returning to their rooms, but I didn't hear anything after that. I wouldn't pay full price for a room here but given it's location, it's very good value for £19 or £29.
Very Noisy. Full of hen/stag night lodgers.
We arrived in Newcastle without a booking and thought that it would be okay to stay here for one night. Quite frankly, it would have been quieter sleeping in the street. Our neighbours were partying when we arrived ( 7.30 p.m.) and continued non stop until 11 p.m. They returned in the wee hours and continued. Admittedly, I was told when we checked in that the hotel was noisy, but, that we would be placed in a quieter section. The room looked as if it had been used for various activities. There were stains on the walls and floor. The bathroom was tidy, but not clean. On the plus side there was a strong shower. We paid £75 for the privilege of staying at this hotel. When I complained at reception the next morning the staff were very understanding and gave us 50% off our bill. I would not recommend this hotel, if you want a good night's sleep.
Give this hotel a miss!
Although the location is fairly good, the staff I encountered were miserable looking, unfriendly and unhelpful. There is no place to leave luggage if you arrive early, though amazingly for a fee of £10 our room could have been ready early to accommodate us - the height of cheek in my opinion. If there are rooms ready and available they should be offered free of charge. I had to wander the streets of Newcastle for 3 hours with my son rather than, on principle, pay the extra £10. The dingy room was in the equally dingy basement area of the hotel with little or no view (due to being in the basement) and had only 2 pillows and one towel. I therefore had to walk all the way back to reception to get the items I needed. On my return I realised there was no teabags - I couldn't be bothered trailing all the way back to reception so had to do without. We did receive fresh towels the next day but the maid's idea of bed-making was laughable - in fact my 15-year-old son could have done a better job! Breakfast was dire - unless you like overcooked scrambled eggs, dried up baked beans and chewy bacon - certainly not worth the £7.50 charged. This hotel was not up to the standard I expect from a Travelodge and is only outdone on shabbiness by the Travelodge at Hill Street in Glasgow where the only saving grace in that particular establishment is the friendly and approachable staff.
Brilliant Bargain!!
Booked this hotel a few weeks before my stay for £19 for the room for one night, with it being near xmas the price persuaded me to try it out. Before arriving I was expecting the worst as I normally stay in more expensive hotels and thought for £19 I'd get some shabby room. I booked a family room and on arrival 1st impressions were very good, nice reception and friendly staff. After an easy check in we were told where our room was, being at the bottom end of the hotel away from the reception I thought oh no what am I going into! Entered the room and was pleasantly suprised, clean, nicely decorated and spacious. The only complaint I would have was the duvet cover was like a plain white sheet sown together and just thrown on, but apart from that nothing else to complain about. Bathroom was clean and nice big towels supplied and the hotel is in a good location for either the town or the quayside. I would definately go back to this hotel and just hope I get another good deal on the price!
Great location and good facilities
Better than average Travelodge. Good city centre location near the Quayside and city centre itself. Stayed mid-week so didn't suffer all the stag/hen party hassle mentioned by others. Good facilities - bar/restaurant on site with reasonable prices. Rooms usual Travelodge standard with tea/coffee facilities - not sure why another reviewer couldn't find them! Not much more to say! I'd stay here again like a shot as long as it wasn't the weekend - and to be fair to Travelodge, the website warns that the area is noisy at the weekend.
Awful - stay at your peril
We have previously stayed at the TL Newcastle and found it to be ok for a nights sleep. However we had the misfortune of booking this stay last night and it was the worst hotel experience of my life. We were accommodated in room 14 in what can only be described as the dungeons of the hotel in what i strongly believe was an overspill room and hardly used. There was a large space for a sofa where there was none, the corridor was dirty and smelly, the room had no towels and when we requested some were given ones with rips and holes in. The duvet cover also had a large hole in it and the shower area smelt badly of mildew, was dirty, previous occupants hair in the shower and dirt on the floor. When we tried to use the shower it leaked all over the floor and the mildew shower curtain flapped against you - horrific. I then tried to make a cup of tea and the cups were dirty. This was bad enough but there was also a very questionable brown mark on the ceiling and walls which I did not want to inspect closer. Absolutely vile!!!! The hotel was fully booked therefore "could not offer another room". I could just about put up with this awful level of cleanliness if i had paid a bargain rate for the room, however to pay £75 and receive one of the filthiest rooms i have ever stayed in my life is totally unacceptable. I have also previously stayed at the Malmaison across the road and only payed £99 for the priviledge of a far superior room in a lovely hotel - only a difference of £14 to the hell hole that you accommodated us in. I would seriously have to reconsider ever using this hotel chain again. I am severly disappointed with this sudden drop in basic cleanliness, i have always thought TL cheap and cheerful but to be downright dirty is a very bad direction for them to be taking. Advice - go to the Malmaison!
Hmmm really not the greatest - better to pay extra elsewhere!
Whilst I realise the travel Lodge is a budget hotel, a room still cost us £70 a night for a friday night so it is only £15 behind the The Jury's Inn where we had stayed on our last trip. We were a group of 9 girls happy just to have somewhere to sleep at the end of the night. However despite the fact we had booked 3 into a room on the booking there was no extra sheets in any of the rooms for the third person to sleep on the sofa bed - which was tiny. The mattress on the sofabed in our room was stained very badly to the point out friend slept on the couch part rather than the pull out mattress. When we did ask for sheets they were just handed to us over the desk at reception rather than being taken up by staff. There was no shower gel etc in the rooms which I was expecting after reading previous reviews, except none of the the staff directed us towards the vending machine which was hidden in a corrider behind the lift - so if you are not staying on the ground floor you won't see it! Our duvet was alo badly stained and the duvet is not in an actual cover, but rather was wrapped in a sheet - probably how it got stained! There was foul smell in the lift lobby all weekend and generally the hotel has no atmosphere whats so ever! Great location but next time we would rather pay the extra and go back to the Jury's inn!!
OK for stag parties
Awful hotel which is NOT worth the £70 price tag to stay on a Sat. VERY noisy at night with the groups of lads coming to stay on the quay. Strange smell everywhere. Vomit in the corridors Food all over the stairs. Tiny bathroom and the water from the shower went all over the floor. no soap or anything so take your own! However the rooms were very big which was nice and it is ideal for the quayside
