Royal Station Hotel Reviews

I stayed at this hotel on my honeymoon and what an absolute disaster. Upon arriving the reception staff were rood and arragant. I used the restaurant and the food was disgusting like eating cardboard.I had a couple of problems in my room and they were not resolved during my... more

Fine for an overnight
We stopped for one (Saturday) night. The hotel is central, though on arriving discovered that there's only a very limited number of car parking spaces which always seem to be full. You end up parking behind the hotel on the large station car park at £8 for 24 hours. The lobby is smart and the stairwell impressive. There are 2 lifts to the rooms - choose the left one because the right one is tiny - not for claustrophobics. We had a room on the third floor at the back of the hotel overlooking the station. Not a big room and the bed was only a 3/4 - on checking our internet reservation it said "you have requested a double room" but it didn't say that we were actually promised one! Anyway, the room and bed was comfortable enough and the train noise wasn't disturbing. The room was a mix of old and new, a nice new very smart bathroom, but dated room with poor lighting, though fairly recently painted. Didn't eat at the hotel (there's a great cafe bar for breakfast on the way into the city centre!) Overall impresssion is that its fine for an overnight stay, not special but not bad either. Watch the bed size!
Terrible Room
Upon check in we were allocated a room on the first floor which can only be described as small, stale and falling to bits. Two of the plug sockets were coming away from the wall and the furniture was very tatty. When asking for a new room the hotel staff were extremely unhelpful and although they did arrange for the sockets to be tightened they weren't able to allocate a suitable alternative. Don't be fooled by the quality of the lobby!
Appalling Hotel
We booked for a Saturday night with our three children. On arrival they had overbooked and offered us a room with 4 beds and said they would squeeze another one in. On inspection the room was too small. We wanted to leave immediately but it was too late to find an alternative. We were eventually put up in a larger double room and they squeezed in three single beds. The room had no windows was dirty and the bathroom old and smelly. Room service arrived but we couldn't risk the kids eating the food. I had a nibble and so did two of the kids. Unfortunately we became ill the next day. The Manager nearly threw up as he asked to inspect the tray the next morning when we demanded a refund. he also acused us of forging the room service bill! The receptionist was a joke the staff seemed mostly Russian and we had a simply horrible time. To top it all we were charged £182.00 for the night! This place deserves to be closed down and I hope it is soon.
Very noisy
This is a very noisy hotel. It is next to the main railway station in Newcastle and goods trains run through the night! Bought ear plugs in desperation. I think some rooms are in a worse position than others but be warned. The room was very small but clean, the staff were generally ok ..I did not think the food was particularly special but it was filling and served hot.... If you value a good night sleep I really would suggest find another hotel.
Adequate, at best
I stayed here because the location was great and I really didn't think that I needed to splurge on my hotel this time. I was in a non-smoking single that ended up being on the very top floor (take the elevator to the 4th floor and then up to the top). The top floor was very quiet, but the front of the hotel is undergoing renovation, so the contents of one room were stashed out in the hall during my stay. The room was very clean, the housekeeping staff was lovely. Initially it was very stuffy, but the staff provided a small fan for my stay. Not the worst that I've experienced, but not the best either.
Indifferent staff and constant noise
I booked into this hotel for two nights, and ended up checking out the next morning. The reception staff are indifferent, and eye contact / smiles are a rarity. The single room was tiny and I almost broke the bathroom door, as it collides with the toilet when opened, an indication of just how small it was. I was on the top floor, and the noise of drunks yelling, taxis tooting, traffic and general city noises drifted through the ancient window. As previous reviews have mentioned, this place is old, tired and due to it's central location it just doesn't need to try that hard. I finally fell asleep at 5am and didn't bother with breakfast a few hours later. I checked into the Jesmond Hotel on Osborne road the next day, 23 quid cheaper, friendlier and even though the single room was facing a busy road, the double glazing did a good job of keeping the noise level right down. If you're captivated by the thought of the age & potential character of the Royal Station Hotel, here's a tip - go into the lobby, have a quick look at the impressive chandelier and then spend your money elsewhere.
great location lovely new room
I was with a group in the first week of March all the rooms were good location unbelievable all the night life is almost outside satff great
A Good Hotel in an excellent Location !!
We booked this hotel last minute as we were going to watch a football match, when i read the reviews on here i was a bit concerned about the hotel standard..... really no need. The hotel has an impressive lobby with a comfortable bar, the rooms were a bit dated but big and clean!! Even with the closeness of the railway the trains didnt disturb us at all, even with a room on the back. It is in an excellent position and the breakfast the next day was very good. Would definatley go back again, having stayed in many hotels all over the globe, being a travel agent myself i would certainly recommend it.
Great place to stay
Have recently stayed at this Hotel and had a great time. Its right near the railway station , the staff were friendly and helpfull and we enjoyed a good nights sleep in one of the newley refurbished bedrooms. We would almost certainly stay again , and have indeed booked for Christmas lunch this year
