Copthorne Newcastle Hotel Reviews

1 / 10
Dec 2007, Ms S.L Colebrook

I write with sadness. The last time we stayed at the Copthorne was under the name of Pinder. We had stayed before when visiting the Ice Arena for various shows. We are coming to Newcastle again in January, February and April of 2008 but shan't be staying because of the... more

yeuch
way overpriced. competely characterless. appalling food. ridiculous food prices. rooms are adequate, but no more. avoid the connosieur lounge, there's nothing in it !!! pool is ok, but hot tub was broken. slightly dodgy location, long walk to city centre restaurants in the dark. noisy at night, some sort of industrial facilities on opposite bank of river making noise all night. rubbish views. avoid, and stay at the Hilton, Gateshead, which is on the opposite side of the river, and has stunning city views.
keep away if you want peace
Overall the standards have dropped quite considerably from what Copthorne-Newcastle use to be: the decoration looks like a cheap B&B, the furniture is old and chairs have got holes, the room are dirty - don't look under the bed (filthy), and the hotel security quite weak. It is a very noise place to stay, we were disturbed at 2 o'clock in the morning with people knocking on doors and jumping from balcony to balcony and trying to get into our room, we called the security but they never came. Quite disappointing overall.
stay somewhere else
Stayed here last weekend for a works do. The posted price is £280 per room per night for a connoisseur room are they having a laugh!!!! Arrived by car the car park is dark dirty and smelly not a good first impression. The reception is nice the staff were helpful and check in was swift it all went downhill from there. Our room was tatty grubby and so dated definitely not 4 star. The resteraunt and bar were overpriced and nothing special the staff were attentive but miserable and busy enjoying their own conversations most of the time. On the friday night I overheard a not too private discussion from a member of the resteraunt about how much guests('old women') in there were driving her mental. I could go on and on about sullen waiting staff and services not as advertised on their web site but I'm starting to sound a bit ranty so I'll leave it at that. Stay somewhere else until this hotel cleans up its act.
good location
after reading some of the views on trip advisor we were worried about our stay in this hotel, but we found the rooms clean and the staff very friendly. we used the connoisseur lounge for breakfast and found we had plenty of choice cereal fruit yogurt, pastries more than enough for us. we also used the leisure club which was good. the hotel also has a great location for visiting the pubs on the quayside. we would stay there again
good hotel
hotel room very nice service was good we booked through expedia which worked out a lot cheaper then the 250.00 pound if i had to pay this then no it wasnt worth it.
Dirty and Run Down
I stayed in this hotel for one night last month. On arrival I was allocated a double room on the third floor. The room wasn't particularly clean - most of the surfaces were dusty and the upholstery was soiled. The bathroom tiles were grubby with mildew deposits and smelled very damp. I was upgraded to a "suite" which was as sub-standard as the original room. Breakfast was served to the sounds of dance music. At checkout the receptionist agreed that the hotel was greatly in need of refurbishment and asked me to fill in a comment card. I was called two hours later by the duty manager in response to my comments. She was very apologetic and also echoed the urgent need of refirbishment. I wouldn't stay here again.
Comfortable but overpriced
Seeing the 4 stars and the reception area I thought the hotel may be of a very high standard. The check in staff were extremly efficient (although one was on her first day). The bedroom was large and comfortable, but some of the furniture and shower was in need of updating. The view of the river was ok, but nothing special and the balcony was miniscule and not worth having. Didn't get a chance to check out leisure facilities. Breakfast was good, but at over £15 overpriced, as was the room. Thankfully I wasn't paying, but if I were I would have expected more for my money.
Overpriced City Centre Hotel!
This is a very average city centre hotel that will simply charge the highest price possible depending on how busy Newcastle is so nothing unusual there! Rooms are ok and reasonably comfortable but nothing special. Views of the river are boring and drab especially on a dull day. Probably not worth the extra when compared with the likes of Camponile or Travel Lodge. It really is not a very memorable experience and not one I can recommend.
Disappointing
Stayed for two nights as we were going to a wedding here. We paid extra for a 1st floor room with a balcony but don't bother the balconies are only about 18inches wide! Staff were great but decor is dated. Breakfast was just ok - we felt a bit rushed on one morning and at £15.75 is definately overpriced unless included in your rate. We paid £130 per night for our room including breakfast and were told this was a special rate. However someone else in the wedding party had only paid £80 for theirs (no breakfast) for exactly the same room as us! Room service prices (although we didn't have it) are a joke. I have often had room service and know you have to pay more but £12.95 for a club sandwich and £8.50 for Heinz Beans on toast is taking the Mickey!!! We had a lovely time at the wedding and the location of the hotel is good but it needs to do some rapid re-furbishment. Struggling to be 4 star I would say.
lovely staff but tacky hotel
£130.00 a night for an executive room which allowed me to have a room and access to the connoisser suite. The chairs in the connoiser suite looked as though they were from a 2nd hand shop. They were just so grubby and dirty. I couldn't use the rrom as I couldn't relax on those chairs. Free breakfast was on hand, no commect as I didn't dare go back to the suite. Free tea and coffee at all times with a drinks and canapes hour. One tiny tray of canapes which were lovely but so limited. There were about 20 on the tray and I ate half of those. So no good for anyone over 8 stone. Had 3 room changes, 1st one window was broken couldn't close, 2nd room smelt like a mouldy chinese restaurant, 3rd room, OK but opposite a sub station with hissing and spluttering early in the morning The plus side the staff were very attentive and friendly, bu that's not what I went there for. I've tried to complained via email and can't find any where to do that. I will definately not use this hotel again. Oh yes another plus, bed sheets were strikingly clean and white.
