Copthorne Newcastle Hotel

I write with sadness.
The last time we stayed at the Copthorne was under the name of Pinder. We had stayed before when visiting the Ice Arena for various shows. We are coming to Newcastle again in January, February and April of 2008 but shan't be staying because of the suite not being up to a reasonable standard the last time we were there.
On that occasion we slept really badly and had a show to see the following evening. I noticed the bed had sharp springs sticking up when we went to bed and after much tossing and turning we decided to inspect the bed in the middle of the night. What a shock to see that we had been sleeping on an ancient mattress that was brown and threadbare and also flattened in shape. Just like a concertina. To make matters worse there was a hard board that had been placed under the mattress and it was sticking out at one side by a good few inches ready to catch our legs on. The headboard was also dangerous as touching it while lying in bed would have made it fall on our heads as we luckily discovered when checking out the rest of the bed.
The Manageress and House-keeper viewed the bed when we complained and were just going to deduct something off the room but then decided to repay our booking as we were so disgusted. The Manager who was away phoned us at home but we were not available and there was no letter of apology.
I still shudder when I think of that awful bed and now look to see what others are like in the Hotels where we have stayed. The Copthorne was always our first choice for location etc and we have booked at the Hilton for January.
I hope that other people have not had a problem like ours.
