Great staff, thin walls
I was a little unsure what to expect given the mixed reviews on here. However, there were plenty of positives: the staff were without exception friendly and attentive. The reception and dining rooms were spacious clean and attractive. The room was clean, warm, and large enough. The breakfast was delicious with a great selection, and eat-as-much-as-you-like. The only downsides were: the walls of the room did seem to be rather thin: I was awoken a number of times during the night by people returning, not noisily, just walking along... more
Cairn Hotel not for students.
I recently stayed at the Cairn Hotel with a student group through EF tours. The group was separated in buildings across the street. Locks did not work; bugs were found in a bed; bed linens were stained; some rooms did not have showers; some showers did not have shower curtains. One meal consisted of pasta with cheese melted over it and french fries. Not acceptable for student trips for safety reasons.
Great little Hotel
Whenever I visit Newcastle from the States, I always stay at the Cairn. The hotel is clean, the staff very friendly, especially in the restaurant and bar. The rooms are cleaned daily and a bowl of fresh fruit and cookies is set out each day, as well as plenty of coffee and tea packets. Everything that is supposed to work really does work. The reception goes out of their way to help with any requests. I am planning to return this year. Jeff Wright Brownsville, Texas
Amazing Jesmond
I liked this hotel, it is a small welcoming hotel and has very friendly staff. Jesmond is a good ares and there is loads going on, with plenty to chooses from for dining or drinking. The room was good and i had a great nites sleep.

great hotel
We've just came back from a fantastic weekend in Newcastle, the Cairn's rooms were spacious and very clean with comfy beds. Checking in was easy and we were given maps and local information by the friendly staff. The bar that is part of the hotel was great, big sofas and the football was on! We will definatly return and would recommend this hotel to anyone.
Expected more for my buck
The room was clean & warm. Booked it at short notice. Expected a higher standard for the ?80 per night. There were a series of hotels in close proximity that looked more inviting.
absolutely fine
this hotel had very friendly staff, very welcoming dining room and ample breakfasts. The only negative comment I would make is that the stair carpet could do with renewing and if you are thinking of booking, shop around and check prices as I got a £60 single room for £35.
Words fail me
The worst hotel I have ever stayed in my life. Unwelcoming, shabby, noisy, extortionately overpriced are but a few adjectives that spring to mind. The sheets were clean, although sleeping in the bed was impossible due to the incessant head splitting noise from a "party" downstairs and the thumping and clumping of folk going up and down the stairs and shrieking with drunken laughter ( or was it hysteria from sleep deprivation?) Cannot comment on the breakfast because in desperation we left at 4am prefering a drive down the motorway home to... more
Disapointing
Start with the cost - £85 for a double room including breakfast. The previous night we had stayed at a Travelodge - just under £50 room only and whilst the surroundings there were anonymous the room was warm and comfortable and the Receptionist couldn't do enough to help and was thoroughly pleasant and friendly. Compare that to The Cairns where we arrived early, around midday, and when I asked the receptionist if we could leave our bags and check in later, she said, curtly, "it depends how many you have". Charming start. When we checked in... more
