Stayed with the wife for one night while up seeing friends. Stayed at Holiday Inn Expresses before and they are the sort of functional cheapish hotel that most travellers are familiar with these days. No frills just good accommodation. The rooms are quite large and the breakfast was fine. Got told off for putting toast through the toaster twice though, I didnt see the sign. You would think a toaster that toasts evenly wouldnt be too hard to find but Ive yet to find one in any hotel!! LOL. What makes this hotel memorable though were the fantastic views over the Albert dock from our room with the Liver building in the background. No complaints and would use this chain again.

  • Advice: Very close to the ferry, shops and restaurants
  • Good For: City Breaks
  • Board Basis:Breakfast Included
  • Tour Operator:Booked Independently

Having read some of the reviews on this site, I thought this would be a great place to stay whilst on business in Liverpool. Unfortunately, I was severely disappointed.
Check In: 1/10 - Despite having confirmation of booking, I was told that I had no reservation. After 10 minutes of arguing, the hotel admitted that they had 'lost me in the system'. After check in, discovered that I had been assigned a twin, non smoking room (having booked a double smoking room). Trip back to reception to be told that they were very busy, so I would need to take it or leave. I argued the matter further and eventually (albeit grudgingly) got 'upgraded' to a smoking twin room.
Rooms: 3/10 - In my room, there was no heating. Although the bare brickwork might have made the place look authentic, it also meant that it was freezing. The TV only had half of the channels working and it was very difficult to see due to the fact that the room was lit by 3 small LED desk lamps and one 60W uplighter on the wall. Guest information was limited to the meal times and fire escape plan and the large stain on the carpet looked as if the previous occupant had been murdered in the room.
Food: 0/10 - No dinner provided at all. The breakfast was an 'all you can eat' continental buffet. This makes very good business sense as no one with tasebuds would want to eat the stale pastries or under ripe fruit.
Value: At £250 for a two night stay in a dark hotel room with no food, I'm glad that I can reclaim on expenses.
Conclusion: I would only stay at this hotel again if the alternative was sleeping in a tent, and even then, it would be a hard choice. While i'm sure that the hotel is acceptable for couples and families on a short city break, the hotel is not up to standard for the business traveller.

  • Advice: Great location for a city break, not so great for families
  • Activities: QM2 was docked on the second night of my stay
  • Board Basis:Bed & Breakfast
  • Tour Operator:Booked Independently
