Tired- Needs a Refurb
from TimeTraveller21
I stayed here on business and it did do the job. The bedroom was spacious with a King Size bed and the Molton Brown toiletries were a nice touch. The breakfast buffet was also hot and fresh. I actually found the staff helpful too. My main critiscism of this hotel would be that it is very tired and needs a refurbishment. I am all in favour of older style properties with faded grandeur but that is not an excuse for maintaining and updating the property. The decor in my bedroom must have been 30 or 40 years old. It was not old world charm but tired and dated. The bathroom was equally dated and I had difficulty operating the bath. Eventually the attachment fell off and I had to screw it back in. I wasn't overly concerned as I was not paying but I would have been very disappointed if I had booked a luxury break with my wife. The bottom line is that this is not a luxury hotel as indicated on its website. It could be a very nice hotel if someone invested some TLC into it.
Town Centre Hotel
from keddleston
Very central location for town, but not ideal for a beach holiday - about a 10 minute walk. Not the best 4* we have stayed in but our room was clean and tidy with luxury Molton Brown toiletries in the bathroom. We overlooked the courtyard garden / indoor pool but no chance of a lie-in if on holiday as the kitchen fans start about 6.30 each morning. Majority of the staff were very friendly. Restaurant was a little disappointing, more of a cafe-style, but food was good. Car parking charged at £12 per day - which seems OTT but, hey ho, it is in the town centre. Indoor pool very small, but adequate for a morning swim.
Lovely building shame about the staff

I was part of a large conference group staying for three nights. The hotel, on arrival, lived up to expectations in terms of location, decor and character. My room, in the original part on the front with French windows on to a small balcony, was grand and beautifully presented. The problems arose when I came to check out. On the Friday check-in I had told the receptionist that I had no car and did not require parking. However, I received a parking charge as part of my bill. This could, I agree, be down to human error or glitch, but when every member of our party of over 50 had the same item on their bill then questions need to be asked. This wasn't the main problem. The attitude of the receptionist was completely obnoxious and totally unprofessional basically not accepting blame, not apologising and almost "sulking" with the guests. To add insult to injury, she then attempted to charge me an extra 16 pounds for the minibar. The minibar had been switched off all weekend - defrosting! At this point I was accused of being a liar! I would recommend the hotel but also recommend the hotel change their software and training/recruitment procedures.
Not what we expected
from AtworthColesy
We were extremely disappointed, this is an average hotel not worthy of a 4 star rating. Our deluxe room was hardly deluxe and not particulary clean, the restaurant had a cafeteria look about it,no tablecloths which you would expect to see in a 4 star hotel. Everything about this hotel was decidedly below expectations and I wonder when was it the last time that this hotel was inspected by the RAC and AA. We would rate this a 3star hotel. This is the first hotel that has two types of deluxe accommodation which apparently is deluxe and deluxe which we can only assume is a cleaner room than the one we were given. If you are looking for 4 star accommodation this is not the hotel for you!
A bit tired in parts
from BeanyBeagle
Hotel review I recently stayed at this hotel and the first thing I noticed on entering my room was that the bedcoverings on both twin beds were stained and obviously had been for some time but washing them had only faded the stains not removed them also the curtains were very dirty and the room was shabby. The bathroom floor was stained and the bathroom shower was an old fashioned 'victorian' styled one with mixer taps. The shower in the first room I was in was either boiling hot or quite cold then eventually the cold water tap gave up the ghost and I had to move into another room where the shower was the same style but worked slightly better. Would have preferred something that was a bit more thermostatically controlled but that is maybe me being slightly picky. What I was upset at was the absence of a the bathrobe that I would have had to request and pay a £20 deposit for which i found a bit much when they had already docked my credit card of £50 to cover any bills I may have run up during my stay. As this was a business trip with the bill being covered by the company I work for I felt this was unneccessary. Taking an imprint of the card is customary but to actually deduct £50 on the understanding it would be credited back to my account later once my account was settled i felt was a huge con and then coupled with the then need to pay a £20 deposit for a bathrobe I felt was a bit ridiculous. The second room was a lot fresher and the bedding and curtains a lot cleaner. A major drawback was the rooms position at the side of the hotel beside a busy road and above the electric gates to the car park. Two sleepless nights later and I was glad to leave. Reception staff seem a bit aloof but the restaurant staff were lovely albeit that we had to request an ice bucket for the wine and not provided with one as a matter of course but again everything was done with a smile. Food was well not brilliant and really I considered eating out on the second night and after deciding to stay in and have the steak i wish i had. Fresh fruit on offer at breakfast was not extensive although the cooked breakfast seemed quite nice. Another quibble I had was having been booked in for DBB dinner was a 3 course affair but if you chose only one course but opted to have a coffee at the end you were charged the full three course price and extra fro the coffee, again another rip off. Dont be fooled by the alluring descripition of the pool, the bird bath in the grounds was bigger. This was a business trip so I wasn't paying which is maybe just as well as had i been I would probably have felt a bit ripped off and certainly would not add it to the list of ones i would return to.
Generally impressed, although I wasn't paying the bill

I stayed at the Norfolk Royale for a week whilst taking part in a training course at the adjacent business centre. Great location, away from the worst of the traffic and right in the centre of town. The hotel has its own underground car park (at 9 UKP per night when I visited). The building is showing its age in places but generally the standard of décor is good and significant effort has been made with the restaurant and refurbished rooms leaving me generally very impressed. I had a room in what I assume is the extension wing. This feels like a trek from the lift or main stairs but based on comments from colleagues, benefited from better sound proofing compared to the older rooms along the hotel frontage. I’d advise not waiting for the lift; the stairs will get you there quicker every time unless you are moving luggage around. Room décor and fittings were pleasant but not particularly inspiring. Full marks to housekeeping for preparing the room to a high standard every day without even being seen. Restaurant breakfast was superb with attentive and cheerful staff throughout the week. Lunch was buffet style to suit the course so difficult to judge the chef’s abilities accurately. Based on what was served I’d have happily eaten there in the evening if I’d felt like three huge meals in a day! Staff, who seem to be mostly eastern European, were genuinely welcoming and available when needed. I did have a problem breaking the language barrier to get the safe in my room opened but wasn’t enough to spoil a good stay. Overall, a great hotel for business travelers, those wanting a little class and anyone seeking a hotel in the centre of town. Full rate isn’t cheap but there seem to be some good deals around. Not the kind of place to go for a wild party though.
Thumbs Up!

After hours of sifting through suitable hotels to spend a romantic weekend with my boyfriend I found this one. My choice was aided by the previous positive reviews (thank you). Then the sealer was the fantastic deal they were giving for the weekend we wanted to book. I was slightly concerned that rooms wouldn't be up to standard following what some had aforementioned. But I can honestly say the room we had was very nice. Quite contemporary in its style, nicely decorated, clean and plenty of storage space (for us girls). It was also very clean and had ample facilities. The bathroom was spotless and the shower was great. The Moulten Brown products were a nice touch. The staff was very helpful, polite, efficient and professional - a real credit to the hotel. The food was amazing. There were several choices for all three of the courses, all of which were served promptly and presented wonderfully. I personally recommend breakfast served in your room. We pre-ordered the night before and it was delivered bang on time the next morning. It’s a real treat for the romantic couple. The only couple of niggles I have were the maids failed to provide us with clean cups and glasses and left us with the dirty ones. Although had we got up earlier, this may have been prevented as our room was cleaned late in the day. Oh and the Satellite TV was out of action and wasn't going to be fixed until after our stay. Neither of which tarnised our otherwise perfect weekend. We can't wait to return for our second visit!
Great Break
from sophiethecat
After having stayed happily on the whole at this hotel in the past but with one or two niggles I was pleased to find that this visit alot of the problems had been cleared up and the atmosphere within the hotel was both more proffesional and friendly and in particular the resturant staff were working much more as a team providing good service and excellent food!!! Well done.
Great

Stayed at the Norfolk Royale for a "Hen" weekend on the 3/4th November. Great hotel, great location. Two mins walk form restaurants, shopping and bars. Lovely breakfast with a huge choice. A la Carte restaurant in the evening but menu looked quite limited. Rooms large, clean and very cosey and comfy. Great Molton Brown products as well! Great stay and will def book to go back again.
So so

This is a three star hotel rather than a four star. It is slightly tired. The rooms on the third floor are supposedly the best rooms and supposedly recently renovated. They are OK but the one I was given intially was small and musty and had eves which meant you couldn't stand up in some parts of it. It was also near the lifts which meant for a lot of door banging / movement. Was moved to another room and it was roomier certainly. Bathrooms in general were of a high standard. But then the rooms were let down by something like having hospital-type blankets on the bed. Not very four star. So slightly disappointing all in all.
