Comments:  This was a great cruise for a pre Xmas celebration. A 2nt party cruise to Bruges. The booking process was easy with helpful staff who advised us well - we were after a short cruise without having to trail through websites etc. Check in was smooth and easy and the ship clean and staff polite. P&O are aimed at traditional British cruisers and this is exactly what we got, the food was tasty, although I found the menu abit too British for my liking (can't critisice though as this is what they say it will be). Entertainment took the form of Frank Carson who was hilarious, followed by karaoke in one of the bars and a good old dance until 4am when I finally collapsed. The bar bill at the end was good too - cruising always worries me as I'm not sure what I'm spending but the prices were really reasonable. Bad points were - queues for breakfast and lukewarm food in the buffet, but overall a good cruise and I would do a mini cruise again and use the same agents to book again

Comments:  From boarding the ship at Southampton, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience.

The food and service was excellent and the ship itself was a floating 5* hotel. The entertainment programme was varied and exciting and the theatre was filled to capacity every night.

The ports visited were varied and interesting and P&O gave detailed briefings of what to expect. We had pre-booked two excursions, Majorca and Dubrovnik and found both good value for money.

Looking forward to our next cruise on Oceana to Norway in June 2008.

Comments:  First family cruise but hopefully it won't be the last! We had been warned that it could take an hour or longer to book in, but our bags were taken from us as we left the taxi,we sailed through Passport control and then straight onto the ship.We were immediately impressed with the cleanliness, the friendliness and once we had sampled the food, the very high quality that P&O were delivering.

We had a balcony cabin on B Deck, it had everything you could wish for,the only slight problem was that once the bed settee was put up at night it was very difficult to manoeuvre. If money had been no object then we would have definitly booked two cabins so that we would have had more space.

We made the most of trips on offer and apart from Madeira where we did our own thing, we went on a trip at each port of call.A trip in the cable car on Madeira followed by the wicker basket journey down is certainly not for the faint hearted but was great fun once it was over!!

We enjoyed La Palma, Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, all having something different to offer. Lisbon was magical and after the tram and coach tour my daughter and I enjoyed a leisurely lunch.Be warned that on ordering 1 glass of rose with lunch the waiter brought 1 bottle! I didn't like to send it back.My husband preferred to go back to the ship so as not to miss Afternoon Tea!The weather turned nasty in Vigo and so the trip to Bayona La Real was cut short.

We loved the shows, the theme nights, the classical recitals-everything.But I am afraid to say Matthew Cutler didn't have the same success as he did on Strictly Come Dancing when trying to teach us to dance!

We can't wait to book another cruise, hopefully to the Mediterranean in the summer of 2008.

Would definetly recommend it, have enough brochures to start a Travel Agent!

Baltic Capitals (R706) - 19 May 2007 (13 nights from Southampton)

This was our first time on a P&O ship, having previously been on Thomson Celebration and The Calypso. It would be hard to go back to Thomson’s after sampling P&O!

Check in at Southampton was fast, efficient and courteous. Arriving at the terminal around 2:15, our taxi was met by a porter who I assumed was there to help us to take the luggage to the check in desk. Not at all, it was whisked away and taken straight to our cabin.

There was virtually no queue to check in, we waited less than a minute to go to one of the many check in desks, and completed the formalities within five minutes. Making our way to the ship, there was an opportunity for a photo but it could easily be bypassed. Entering the ship, we were given directions to our cabin which we found easily. The cabin door was open and the keys were on the dressing table. The cabin keys are electronic, but are separate from the cruise cards. A luggage mat was placed on one bed; an array of welcoming leaflets (including our Portunus Club welcome letters) was laid out on the other.

Our cabin, the cheapest inside on deck 9 (C288) was spacious and very well appointed. A single and a double wardrobe with 28 hangers, and 8 drawers of various sizes, gave plenty of storage space. The cabin was well lit and well furnished with a small sofa, chair, coffee table, dressing table, 2 bedside lockers, 2 large mirrors, two pictures, fridge (initially stocked with two small complimentary bottles of water), electronic safe (free), and tea and coffee making facilities - which we did not use as our cabin steward or room service could provide a pot of tea or coffee and a range of food from a croissant to a hot meal 24 hours a day at no extra charge. The bathroom had two cabinets concealed behind side mirrors, which when open can be arranged to let you see the back of your head, and giving plenty of storage space. The bathroom cabinets contained racks for the drinking glasses and a shaver point (handy for charging up the electric toothbrush). Everything was tidily hidden away when not in use. There were even two small litter bins recessed into the shelf below the sink. A small selection of moisturising creams and gels was provided, and a nice touch of luxury – Molton Brown shower gel.

The directory in the cabin contained a surprisingly good room service menu, postcards, and writing paper, and a guide to the TV and the ship’s facilities. We had 3 movie channels, 3 news channels (BBC, Sky, CNN), BBC World, the view from the bridge, the ship information channel (showing maps of our cruise, weather, speed etc), and a channel which showed the Port Talks and Lectures after they were shown live in the main Theatre. Announcements are not made in the cabins (thank goodness), but can be heard through the TV on Channel 1.

Aurora is beautiful. I didn’t think I was going to particularly enjoy such a large ship (I know, she’s quite a modest size by today’s standards), but she is stylish, elegant, with a great range of facilities and a decent amount of deck space. Most of the time, it was hard to believe there were 2000 people on board. Where were they all? There is so much space on this ship.

Our cabin was close to the aft decks. We loved these traditional tiered horseshoe decks, a great place to sit, sheltered from the wind, on sea days, or to wave goodbye when sailing from the ports.

The promenade deck is very wide at the sides of the ship, giving plenty of space for walking; strolling gently, or just sitting and watching the world go by. At either end, the promenade deck goes inside the ship, and there is no view as you walk around the bow. At our sail away from Southampton, champagne was on offer at £2.90 a glass, and the prom deck was full of people waving Union Jacks while a brass bank played on the quayside.

FOOD

We tried “The Orangery” buffet for afternoon tea soon after boarding and were not overly impressed (but we rarely are impressed by self service!) The quality of the food in The Orangery does not match the quality of the restaurants – certainly for Tea. However, afternoon tea in the Median restaurant was delightful. We always got a table for two with our own stand of cakes, while waiters came round serving finger sandwiches, scones, and toasted teacakes, and pouring tea. If you ask for a speciality tea such as Earl Grey or Assam, you get your own pot. The tea was usually fresh leaf, although my Earl Grey was made with teabags on one afternoon. A pot of clotted cream and a selection of Frank Cooper jams in individual glass jars was on each table. Afternoon tea in the Orangery simply can’t live up to the same standards of elegance. Tea is self service, whipped cream replaces clotted, and a cheaper jam in plastic pots is used.

Aurora has two main restaurants; each is open for Dinner with fixed sittings at 6:30 and 8:30. The Orangery buffet was also opened each evening, and for a cover charge of £7.75 one could eat at the Pennant Grill or Café Bordeaux. The Pennant Grill is in the open air at the back of deck 12 if the weather is good, but on this cruise was mainly a reserved part of the Orangery. Café Bordeaux is the ships 24 hour Bistro with waiter service and food cooked to order. The cover charge for Café Bordeaux only applies for dinner (18:00 to 21:30). The menus for the Pennant Grill and Café Bordeaux change every three or four days. We had dinner early on in the cruise in Café Bordeaux, and the food was outstanding. We had Surf and Turf, and the fillet steak was the best I have had for a long long time. The steaks are apparently imported from the US. The prawns were also full of favour. We had intended to try Café Bordeaux a second time, but Dinner in the main restaurant was generally so good that we didn’t see the point of eating anywhere else. We had late sitting in the Alexandria restaurant with delightful companions on a table for six. Our table was close to a window and had a good view, although we noticed when having lunch in the Medina restaurant that even tables in the middle of the restaurant had a fair view because of the way the levels of the restaurant are tiered. Our waiters were truly excellent. If you didn’t like something, it was changed almost immediately. One evening, one of our companions asked for a scoop of ice-cream with her dessert, and of course when it arrived we all looked rather envious. Our waiter had anticipated this, and was back a moment later with ice cream for the rest of the table. The Alexandria restaurant was only open for dinner, and breakfast and lunch were open seating in the Medina. If our dinner waiters saw us in the Medina they would always come over and say hello, and make sure everything was alright, even though we were not on one of their tables. Generally though service at breakfast and lunch could be a bit hit and miss. It was OK, but often not up to the standards of excellence that we found at dinner.

The quality of the food was often superb, especially on the gala nights. Getting rare beef and pink lamb was not a problem. Dinner was usually better than lunch, which tended to be simpler and only three courses – thank goodness! Lunch one day was fish, chips and mushy peas, and made a welcome change. Curries were often available at lunchtime, and again made a nice change from the gastronomic excesses of the evening. Wine was excellent value. The “wine of the cruise” was £12 a bottle. The house wine was £7.50 a half litre, and was absolutely fine. There was always a special after dinner drink – a port or a liqueur - at a reasonable price (and the cocktail of the day in the bars before dinner.)

ENTERTAINMENT

The range of entertainment was very good. The ship has a large theatre and a 200 seat cinema, which is also used for port talks and classical recitals. A pianist – Naomi Edelmariam – gave five recitals, and her concerts were a highlight of the cruise. It was wonderful listening to these recitals in such a small venue, sitting so close to the stage that we were able to appreciate her dexterity visually as well as aurally. Naomi’s recitals lasted about 45/50 minutes, and were often themed according to the countries we were visiting, so we listened to the likes of Beethoven, Sibelius, and Grieg as we made our way around the Baltic and up to Norway. Around half of each programme was well known “popular” pieces.

Four different cabaret acts were on this cruise; comedian/impressionist/singer Allan Stewart and jazz singer Elaine Delmar were on board for the first week, illusionists “The Twins” and west end vocalist Robert Meadmore were on board for the second week. There was also an after dinner speaker, Diane Simpson, guest lecturer Guy Caplin talking about the golden age of television, and a series of excellent lecturers by on board jeweller Chris Burgess who spoke authoritatively about Faberge, Russian Art, and Amber. Chris was passionate about his work, and also had some beautiful pieces of jewellery in his shop which he was happy to show to people who he knew had no intention of buying it!

Aurora’s own 13 strong theatre company gave shows of typical cruise ship standard! Four different bands and a cocktail pianist played in various venues around the ship.

An “interview with the captain” was quite interesting, as was a “virtual bridge tour” by the second officer, a theatre presentation using slides. Both offered the chance to ask questions at the end.

CONDITION & CLEANLINESS

Public areas were in excellent condition and spotless. It was noticeable that handrails were constantly being cleaned. Decks were washed down every night.

Our cabin appeared reasonably clean when we got on board. We always give drawers a wipe with a face cloth before we put our clothes away and it was still white after we wiped them – a good sign. However, there were stains on the sofa and one of the bed spreads. About a week into the cruise, I had lost something, and ended up pulling the sofa and beds out and checking the top shelf in the wardrobe where the life jackets were. The wardrobe top shelf was dusty and there was a bottle of hand gel left by a previous passenger. There was some discarded paper behind the sofa. The cabin was not vacuumed all the time we were on board – the carpet was getting noticeably “bittier” as the cruise went on, and one of the concealed waste bins in the bathroom was not emptied for 3 days. We made a note of some of these issues on our CSQ on the last full day of the cruise and put it in the box at reception. That evening, the carpet had been vacuumed, and the waste bin in the bathroom had been emptied. Our cabin steward was very friendly but clearly a bit lazy. We should have said something to him earlier in the cruise, but I was curious to see how long it would before he finally checked the waste bin and vacuumed. He got half the tip that he otherwise would have received and a note in his envelope expressing our disappointment, and will hopefully learn from that. I noticed housekeeping sometimes left cards outside cabins to warn that they would be inspecting them the next day. This system seems flawed – if you warn the passengers, then you also warn the stewards. Managers/Supervisors need to carry out more spot checks.

There was some slight damage to the bottom of our wardrobe that was patched up with duck tape.

PORTS OF CALL

Copenhagen, Warnemunde (Rostock), St Petersburg, Helsinki, Stockholm, Oslo, Kristiansand.

We did all ports of call on our own, apart from St Petersburg, where we had a private tour with Red October. I think it would be difficult to attempt St Petersburg independently. The ship docks in the commercial port some distance from the city, and a long way even from the dock gates. You need a visa to attempt to do St Petersburg on your own, but not if you go on an organised excursion (and you can organise your own tours through Russian companies such as Red October, Alla, or Denrus).

Port information leaflets were good, providing a map and practical information. For example, for Warnemunde, I had checked up the times of trains into Rostock on the internet. What I had not appreciated is that Rostock station is in a modern part of town, perhaps a 15 minute walk from the historic centre. The directions in the port information leaflet told me which tram to take from the station to the town centre. A word of warning though, in Helsinki we were not berthed where we were meant to be – check before leaving the ship! We found our way to the centre easily enough, but didn’t know how to get back!

Berths were often some distance from the town/city centre. In Warnemunde and Oslo we were berthed in the centre. At Kristiansand the berth is perhaps a 15 minute walk from the centre. At other ports, were were half an hours walk or more. Shuttle buses were provided, usually at a charge. A free shuttle was provided in Stockholm, and in Copenhagen a city bus runs from the cruise ships to the centre.

Berthing in the port of Stockholm was an unexpected bonus, as this cruise was meant to anchor at Nyneshamn, a tender port an hour away from Stockholm. This was the first time Aurora had been into Stockholm, and it was touch and go whether we would get there or not. Stockholm is reached through an archipelago of small islands, the route is about 100 km from the open sea and takes four hours. We picked up our Stockholm pilot in Helsinki, as he wanted to be satisfied about the ships manoeuvrability before allowing us in. We were also dependant on winds staying below 25 knots. One thing that had not been factored in was that we had to leave Stockholm the way we came – by the northerly route – as we were just too big to leave by the southerly route. This added 4 hours to our journey on to Oslo. However, this was nice as it meant we navigated the fjord into Oslo from 9:30 to 11:30, and it was very pretty. Our departure from Oslo was delayed until 20:30 to make up for the late arrival. The passage out of Stockholm was also very beautiful.

CONCLUSION

We had a superb holiday on board a wonderful ship, and we are looking forward to cruising with P&O again.

Comments:  I decided to surprise my parents with a seven night cruise aboard Aurora for their fiftieth Birthdays and their thirty years Wedding Anniversary.

They have both cruised in the past, but this was to be my first time. From the very start to the very end we had a fantastic holiday and could not fault the ship or the fantastic staff. I'll break down my review into the following:

Southampton Docks

After quite a lengthy traffic jam we entered the docks and were directed to our loading point. The staff here were very efficient and quickly whisked away our suitcases and our car was gone as soon as we had signed the relevant paperwork. We were then directed to the terminal where we handed over our tickets and were given our Cruise cards. The whole process, including queuing, took five minutes and then we boarded the ship straight away.

Cabin

We were pointed in the direction of our cabin and our suitcases were waiting outside the door. Our excellent and friendly Cabin Steward Morris introduced himself and advised us of the safety notice and explained how we can complete dockets for any food or drink items we would like to be in the room each day. Morris worked very hard all week and kept the cabin absolutely spotless.

When booking I decided to upgrade to a Stateroom with balcony and bath on B deck and was extremely glad to have done so. There was plenty of room for the three of us with two single beds pushed together for my parents and a double sofa bed for myself, which Morris made up every night and folded away every morning whilst we were at breakfast.

Ship

We then decided to explore the ship, which was absolutely spotless and remained so all week. Whilst in each port we saw the ship being cleaned, painted and varnished without any disruption to passengers.

Aurora does have a bit of a confusing layout, where it is necessary to go down a deck and come back up at the fore or aft to access some areas, but is easy enough to become familiar with.

There are three fairly small heated swimming pools, but they did not become crowded and were adequate for swimming. The Jacuzzis were also very welcoming and I ended up with mild sunburn after spending quite some time relaxing in one! One swimming pool is situated inside in a large area with a retractable roof. This meant we could carry on swimming or lounging on the sunbeds even if the wind picked up later in the evening.

The ship had facilities to accommodate all ages and there was a good mix of people aboard. At 24 I certainly did not feel left out or out of place and can't imagine passengers of any age would be aboard Aurora.

Food

After exploring the ship on our first day we were just in time for afternoon tea, which consisted of light finger sandwiches and a vast selection of freshly baked cakes. We found this meal so irresistible we skipped lunch in favour of it each day.

The Orangery was a perfect spot for breakfast, where you could help yourself to as much or as little as you liked and consisted of fresh fruit, cereal, pastries, toast and cooked breakfast with a different selection every day.

For the evenings I choose for us to dine on the second sitting and we were allocated a table in the Medina Restaurant. We dined at a table for eight and it was nice to meet some people who you then recognised around the ship. The food was to a high standard and there was a good selection each evening.

If that day's menu did not take your fancy there was a choice of always available main courses, such as steak, which I did sample one evening. Each person at our table enjoyed the food and the only complaint during the whole week was when one serving of soup was too salty. The puddings were to die for and anything I type here could not do them justice!

Staff

Our Waiters, Paul and Abhisek, were so friendly and could not have done more for us. Abhisek soon learnt that I liked to have a granary roll each night and ensured he always had an extra one available for me in his basket in case one of his others dinners decided they would like a granary roll that evening!

Our Wine Stewardess, Randeta, also knew that I liked a bottle of Becks each evening and would come over after we were seated and ask if I would like my usual. Almost as soon as I had finished my drink Randeta would come to collect my empty glass and ask if I would like another one. Never was there a feeling of pressure or over-bearing service, just excellent, attentive and extremely friendly staff.

There was not a single member of staff that we could find anything to complain about.

Entertainment

We did feel the entertainment was a little disappointing. The Comedian we saw started off very well and made some excellent jokes about the late-comers to the Theatre, but soon went downhill and ended with some very tired gags. The magic show consisted of performing largely the same trick several times just with a different style of box that one of the magicians climbed into each time!

All-in-all, not a bad way to spend an hour after dinner, but could use some work.

Casino

I thoroughly enjoyed the Casino and feel the staff there deserve special mention for their friendliness. The Dealers all seemed to be extremely well liked by the gamers, even when they were taking their money from them!

Ports

Our cruise took us to Vigo, Lisbon, Bilbao, and Brest and we found plenty to do in each port, preferring to make our own way rather than to go on the ship's excursions. For early May we did have some very nice weather and on the rare occasions where it was not so nice we still found plenty to keep us occupied.

Problems

There are only two things that we could complain about with this cruise. The first concerns P&O's Customer Services department. Before cruising I had contacted Customer Services to make some changes to our dining arrangements and was told that this had been sorted only to find the changes had not been made once on board.

We also did not receive some items we told we would, but I will not go into that now. My advice when dealing with Customer Services is to get written confirmation for any non-standard items that you are told will be added just in case they aren't.

My second complaint relates to some of the passengers on the ship. During the help yourself meals some passengers were extremely rude, pushing, shoving and walking straight into people as though they hadn't eaten in months. We even saw a woman in her sixties walk straight into a small child and knock him off his feet. This woman just continued as though nothing had happened and didn't even check to see if this child was hurt.

Only a small amount of passengers behaved like this, but it was certainly noticeable.

Overall

We had a fantastic holiday and I was extremely pleased I decided to book this cruise.

The ship and the staff are fantastic and we have nothing but praise for both. My parents, who have cruised with P&O a few times before, completed the customer feedback form and selected “Better than Before” for the questions asking you to compare this cruise to previous ones you have experienced with P&O.

I enjoyed this cruise so much I am already scouring the P&O brochures for next year and will probably go on a three night cruise on Aurora later this year.

I have recommended P&O to friends and colleagues and would advise anyone considering booking a cruise on Aurora to stop thinking and just go for it!

Comments:  This was our second trip this year in April, we were on the Arcadia, and this was a fantastic 12 days.

Our cabin steward was fantastic nothing to much trouble, table waiter Vraj and Marcus, they were superb.

On our table of 8 we had 6 of the nicest people you could wish for. The food and the ship's entertainment was as good as you expect from P&O.

We loved the different rooms and bars, Champions bar was good, Alexanders was my favourite. The Atrium was amazing.

If we had a problem they sorted it. We are sat here thinking of the great time we had, and we would not fail to travel on this ship again in the future.

We are hoping to book the Oriana in 2007.

Comments:  Xmas cruise on P&O Aurora from 18th - 27th December 2005. This was absolute sheer luxury. Both adults and children were treated so well. Children received presents on two separate occasions, adults were left a present on Xmas day. Father Christmas on the funnel of the ship on Christmas Eve was very emotional and not to be missed. Food was superb the whole of the cruise. Staff were fantastic. Weather could have been slightly better but no complaints whatsoever. All staterooms and public rooms were immaculate and very tastefully decorate for Christmas. Would have liked to book for next xmas but have left it too late but will certainly go again sometime.

Ship in fantastic condition.

Comments:  This was a wonderful family cruise holiday enjoyed thoroughly by three generations of our family.

We boarded Aurora at Southampton without a hitch for our 14 night Mediterranean cruise.

Once on board we were wonderfully treated by very attentive staff. The children had a great time at the Kid's club - we hardly saw them during the day they were having so much fun!

There were three fairly small pools which were never overcrowded and at different temperatures to suit all tastes. There was even a wave machine. The days on ship were some of our favourites as there was so much to do, but port stops gave wonderful opportunities to see many parts of the med without the hassle of too much travel. Some of the port highlights for us were Pisa, Rome and Monte Carlo. Evenings on board were our favourite times, six course dinner followed by a fantastic live music show, cinema, live bands in several of the lounges finished off by “Midnight Munchies”!

Overall this is the best family holiday we have ever had - no one wanted to come home and we have already booked Aurora for next year to cruise the Baltic!

Comments:  Don't just think cruising is for older people, my wife and I are in our 30's with a 2 year old daughter we met plenty of others like ourselves and the child care is first class - this was our second cruise on Aurora. The first one we were on the news causing an international incident due to a stomach bug but this was blown out of proportion by some publicity seeking passengers. We booked a cruise again the next year.

All in all if you have children and don’t want the hassle of airports, baggage allowances looking after your children yourself, wondering where to eat or not being able to go out at night go cruising - you can go to the theatre cinema etc, whilst your kids slumber never more than 5 minutes away.

If you've never been on a P&O cruise you wont believe how good the staff are you will expect more from everywhere you go after which is annoying as they just don’t measure up.

Comments:  We set off for a 16-night cruise, husband, 3 children, 14, 11 and 4 and myself. I enjoy partying and staying up late, husband enjoys early nights. The cruise had something for us all.

Club for 4 year old was excellent, Club for 11 year old superb and 14 year old found plenty to do and places to hang out making new friends. Everyone friendly, staff absolutely brilliant. Choice of destinations was well thought out and amount of things to do when there was very satisfying.

Accommodation was clean, tidy and fresh at all times. Would have no complaints regarding service at all. I would go on a cruise with P&O and on the Aurora again. A huge fan.
