Aug 2011, The Hardy-Paterson-Dixon clan

We booked for two nights with an offer from KGB Deals for £89 for two nights b&b.
Party of four - two couples aged 36-42
We were looking for somewhere to rest our heads after exploring the nightlife.
After googling and reading reviews we were quite put off but it would seem the reviews weren't accurate (in our opinion).
Location - not the best, it is a bit far out of the centre, a fifteen minute walk or £5 taxi ride. We were panicked after reading it was a rough area but we saw no signs of anything to back this up.
The rooms were small but clean - small double bed and only one bedside cabinet as the bed was pushed against the wall. Our room was on the front which we thought would be the nicest but with only single paned glass we could hear the traffic all night, followed by a band playing one morning as there was a wedding going on downstairs (it was about 9:30am which is early if you don't get in until 4am!). The walls are pretty thin so you can hear people coming and going (sorry to anyone we disturbed trying to get in!) and I was a bit shocked to hear the person upstairs going to the toilet.
Breakfast - pretty much what you get in travel lodges etc, nothing to write home about but we were literally lining our stomachs for a day of drinking so it did the trick.
All in all we would go there again if there was an offer on.
If we had paid the standard rate which is £120 per night then we wouldn't have been happy with what we got.
The staff were lovely and helpful.

MY parents and my husband stayed at the paragon in August 2011 for the third time. I rate it as 'good value for money'. I also stayed at the Britannia which is located in the city center. The Britania is five minutes from the train station ,much more convenient. However The Paragon was far better in my opinion. I have also stayed at the copthorne which is very good so I know a decent hotel. The paragon doesnt have the fancy trimmings or extra facilities like gym or spa's but is decent. I am going back in october and am likely to stay at the parragon although it is a taxi ride away because the parragon hotel appeared cleaner, the rooms are boutique style and I paid £45.oo for bed & bfast.

There was damp in the hallway the paint was coming of the walls, you could not have the heating n unless you were present in the room. They gave away the rest of my parties rooms and sent them to a hotel that was a hostel. I would not r4ecomend this hotel if ou are paying full price. The staff did the minimum to make you feel welcome .

Jul 2008, Miss K Robinson

I had read the reviews prior to my stay at the Paragon and my initial thoughts were "Oh my God, what have I let myself in for", then went on to think "its only for one night, how bad can it be?". The biggest, most grottiest, would even call it a "Hotel", i have ever stayed in in all my life. Everything about it was terrible.
Upon arrival, I was greeted by a very young (and im only 22 myself) and ignorant man who made it quite obvious that he didnt really want to be there and was talking to a friend in reception who actually looked like he was homeless!! Good start I thought.
I was given room number 532 and directed to the lifts.I was also advised that breakfast was booked for 7am. I advised him that I wouldnt be having breakfast due to a meeting early the following morning and had a cab booked for 7am. I thought i would have a cup of coffee in the morning and that would set me up for the day.
I eventually found my room. The Corridors had obvious damp and the cleaners must go through alot of air freshner to try and clear the damp, musky smell that was clogging up my airways!!!! i went into my room which had a single bed and was thankfully clean. I went into the bathroom and found the shower (no bath) with mould all over the place. There was no way I would be having a shower in that!!
I led on the bed and something caught my eye. The hotel had provided the basics, tea, coffee, sugar etc etc and an electrical point for the kettle, but no kettle???? I rang down to reception who refused to answer, so I went down and asked for a kettle to be sent up. He advised me that he would "see if there was one to be sent up to me" - I am still waiting it!!
About 11pm I was woken up by an absolutely horrendous singer in the nearby bar who carried out singing, out of tune, for a good 2 and 1/2 hours later - which wasnt any good for me as I had to be up for 6am. I could here every word she was singing even though I had buried myself under the covers with 2 pillows and my hands over my ears!!! Joys of having single glazed windows I presume!!!
I thought that booking my hotel via Superbreak who have never let me down on hotels previously would mean it had to be to a certain standard - how wrong could I have been.
I would recommend no-one to stay there - Its a [--] hole!!!!

My wife and I booked a double room on...

Nov 2007, Mr L GILLARD

My wife and I booked a double room on a B/B basis for 2 nights. We were allocated room 342, this room stunk of urine, was very small and needed decorating, it was impossible to stay there. We complained and were given the keys of room 412. This room also was small and smelt damp, we looked in the shower/toilet area and found black mould on the tiles and shower area which complemented the rust around the taps! Both rooms were complete dumps and were uninhabitable.
On returning to the reception we saw 2 other people complaining about the state of their rooms. The receptionist stated that the best rooms were on the 1st floor but they were all allocated, she gave me the keys of another room on the 5th floor. We took the lift to this floor but the smell from the corridor of stale food along with the filthy carpets and damp peeling walls completely put us off. We took the keys back and joined 3 other people who were also complaining about this so called hotel.
I am 64 yrs old and have stayed in hotels all over the world, this without doubt is the worst hotel I have ever seen, the owners should be ashamed of themselves, the 2 rooms I saw were disgusting. We got back in our car and drove 200 miles back home. If you are thinking about staying in this dump, think again you would be better off sleeping on a park bench!

Sep 2007, mk_pandit

I stayed this hotel for a weekend trip to Birmingham. The hotel is located at 25 minutes walk from Birmingham Snow Hill station and 20 minutes from High Street station. The hotel is a quite old building.
I was given a very shabby room. All the things were quite old though the bed and bathroom was clean and tidy. I was given room on 4th floor extreme corner. I requested at reception for change of room to a better one.
The staff was very rude and I came to know that hotel is currently undergoing renovation, and they can't give me another room.
If you are planning to stay here in near future, please avoid.
There are other good hotel close to High Street station, which could be a better option at same price.

Room was damp and cramped. Shower was a dribble, towels were clean.
Booked 2 singles - got put in a twin room - didn’t get much sleep. Woken at 5.15 by sound of skips being loaded. Had to argue about "inclusive breakfast.”
Good location, but with a full hotel they appear to offer you what they have, not what you have booked.
Staff were very good.

Nov 2005, Mr A.G Batchelor

The Paragon is a faded hotel with character. It could do with some refurbishment, but is very good value for money. Double rooms come with either a bath or a shower, and I recommend taking the bath option as these rooms are much larger.
There is no double glazing, so there is a fair bit of noise from the nearby road, but internal noise from other rooms was minimal. The bed was comfortable, and the room warm, although blankets and sheets are used rather than a quilt. Wardrobe space was limited.
The breakfast was very good, and most of the staff were friendly and helpful.
The hotel is in an industrial area, about an easy 15 minutes walk from the town centre.
If you are after a low priced base to enjoy the delights of Birmingham - (the balti curry we had was superb !) then the Paragon fits the bill.
