Absolutely Shocking!
from ktwoo
This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. My room was not hoovered once and the carpet was disgusting. My bed sheets were not clean and I got flea bites! The staff are the most unfriendly and unhelpful staff I have ever come across. If you're on a budget stay at the Premier Travel Lodge or City Inn within walking distance of the City Centre and loads better (and cheaper). If you're a woman on your own this is a definate no, no! Horrible, just horrible...........I would rather have commuted for 2 hours than stayed there for the week.
CRANKY TOWERS

We stayed here on the weekend of the cricket England V Australia. The first stage of our weird experience started when we entered New Street station at around 6pm to be greeted by an army of ticket checkers. So after finally escaping from the train checkers and adding an hour onto our weird journey we started to make our way to what we thought then was a great hotel. I must confess I did not read these reviews prior to booking but thought the rooms looked decent... boy was I wrong. I should have known -- this hotel had rooms even though it was cricket weekend! As we entered the hotel - which looked conveniently located in the centre of Birmingham we entered reception through a round door to be greeted by a full on physical fight between a couple in reception area. It was complete madness - the reception staff were running around screaming and trying to get the people fighting out of the hotel - as if that would have solved the problem! At this point I had to sit down and have a cigarette as the commotion rolled around me. Both the police and paramedics turned up and the couple where taken away by the police. It took almost 45 minutes for them to check me in as I had been allocated a font facing room - I asked the receptionist for a room at the back as she told me that the front rooms "can be very noisy" so I give her credit she moved me to the side of the hotel. Then an Aussie turned up and was trying to get his room key as it became clear they keep the keys behind reception when you go out and you must give them a piece of paper with your room number on (I suspect they had problems with people loosing there keys) this guy did not know the man he was sharing the room with! which freaked me out, and the recpetionist proceeded to ask him loads of security questions in front of us - he commented that it was not high security! as we could hear! We then took a lift to our room. The whole hotel was covered in mirrors it was like a fare ground ride ...everywhere! I looked I could see myself at all angles - very bizarre! I entered the bedroom and the room had no natural light - due to a building directly opposite I could also hear a horrid guzzling noise from the air conditioning of the other building. There was cobwebs on the lights and thick dust on the telephone. When I went in the bathroom I could see partial sick on the toilet seat which made me nearly be sick. Also the towels where dirty with black patches on them. The floor looked like it had not been cleaned for months with bits of hair matted into the carpet. The TV in the room was from the 1950s with knobs. My friend had a shower and in order to do this you need to turn the taps - one of the taps came off in her hand resulting in the whole bathroom flooding. The plus points of this hotel are that the shower was powerful (if you can say that) and the bar is ok apart from the wine which tasted so cheap it gave me a headache. If you are looking for a hotel to go and get drunk and be sick - then this is the place.

The worst hotel I have ever stayed in. Staff could not find our booking on arrival which resulted in a new booking being made and a double charge! The hotel refused to refund the extra payment that had been made due to their mistake and at best offered us an extra stay in the future. I however would not return to this hotel if it was the last place to stay in Birmingham. Cigarette burns on the pillowcase, shabby interiors, unclean bathroom and a television that looked like it belonged on the set of crossrads! Unfriendly and unhelpful staff. 1 out of 5 is too high a rating for this place!
The hotel from hell
from Xzanthe
We had the misfortune to book this hotel by mistake for a family reunion and had the following in two rooms; A wet bed cigarette ends and burns on the headboard and cover in a non smoking room a used condom by the bed used cotton bids in the bathroom peeling wallpaper stains and ripped sheets All that after moving rooms 4 or 5 five times having refused others. The staff with the exception of one lady manager who subsequently left, were disinterested (if you could find them to talk to) The bar was full of loud mouth drunks and the young barmaid totally out of her depth on her own. On a later visit to Birmingham we were told by our taxi driver that the place was one of ill repute! I would take a taxi to a different city before staying in the place again. It was filthy, disgusting and should be closed. As someone who has family in the city it does Birmingham disservice
Appalling

Stayed at the Britannia Hotel on the 4th of June 05. Never again, wallpaper peeling off walls, dirty room and bathroom, inches of dust behind TV, mattress would have been more at home on the local tip. Asked for cleaners - took 2 attempts for them come along to the room. Staff uninterested. Don't go!!
Avoid at all costs
from Byreman
Faded grandure would be an extremely generous phrase to use. Grubby, dingy, tired and in desperate need of closure and complete renovation. Rooms were small & grubby, with damaged facilities (kettle, TV, telephone). Cleaning equipment and linen trolleys seemed to litter the corridors. Staff were disinterested and quite probably demotivated. Bar and restaurant had no natural light. Bar was very smokey and the food was pre-heated and processed in the worst possible way. Avoid at all costs would be my advice.

I had the misfortune to stay at this 'hotel' when my mother was taken ill & passed away during my stay there. On arrival, I had to wait a long time to check-in( I had travelled over from France & was extremley tired.)One very shabby looking receptionist(greasy hair & unruley ill-fitting clothing) was booking-in several flight attendants. After completing formalities( & what seemed endless copies of my credit card) I was assigned a room.I jostled with the chamber staff for the ancient lift & shared it with dirty laundry & bin bags! Infact, I returned to reception several times & changed my room about 5 x's in all: they were absolutley dreadful: shabby, smelly, filthy windows, out-dated, black netting on the windows....unfortunately,some convention was on in the city so I was trapped in the pit.An even bigger shock came when I was checking out-over £500 telephone charges was on my bill.Yes, I had arranged my moms funeral over the phone but the extras for using the phone was day-light robbery. Last year, my aunt was ill - this hotel was the only one available in the whole of the city....i reluctantly returned with my 8yr old daughter. We were given a room in a dinghy corner, 2 tiny single beds with horrid candlewick bed-spreads, dusty underneath & to cap it all, there was NO lock on the door so we had to pile our luggage next to it at night & sleep with 1 eye open! I was certain not to use the phone this time....i have wowed not to return to this heap again, even if everywhere is fully booked.........
Oh. My. God!

Supposed to stay here for a business trip. Oh my God!! I was so appalled by the state of the rooms, corridors, bathroom, etc. The room smelled of what I could only described as disgusting filth. Phoned another hotel, luckily they had a room (for only £10 more!) and I checked out straight away, without charge. I told them exactly what I thought of the place first though. Do not ever, ever stay here unless you have no other option. Even if you have to go outside the city.
Massively overpriced
from davywavy
Where in the world can you find a hotel with tiny rooms where some of the TV channels randomly don't work, peeling wallpaper, chipped decor and threadbare carpets coming up from the seams in the corridors, and an ambience which plainly hasn't seen refurbishment in fifteen years or more? All this for the cheap cheap cheap price of over a hundred quid a night? Only at the Birmingham Britannia! What an awful hotel. if they were charging £35 a night, it'd be fairly priced. A hundred quid? I'll never go back, and I won't be using Britannia again if this is the quality their other hotels offer. Oh, and the iron in the 7th floor 'ironing room' (a cupboard in the corridor with an ironing board in it) was broken.
Just as everyone said.....

It´s as bad as everyone said..... do not stay in this hotel.
The reception is the only nice part of the hotel. As soon as we were given our key, the lift smelt of a stale mixture of vomit and urine (no exaggeration- it truly was vile). The bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned for weeks. There were loads of pubic hairs on the... more
