Disgusting hotel, rude staff, worst hotel we have ever been to.
1 / 10
Aug 2011, Norb and Emma

The reception is the only nice part of the hotel. As soon as we were given our key, the lift smelt of a stale mixture of vomit and urine (no exaggeration- it truly was vile).
The bathroom looked like it hadn't been cleaned for weeks. There were loads of pubic hairs on the toilet seat, unidentifiable stains and general grime in the bath and the main light didn't work.
The room itself was even worse. There was a cigarette end end in the window, the phone was sticky, the furniture had layers of dust on and it was truly awful.
We went to reception to ask to be moved rooms after listing our complaints. We didn't get an apology, just a grunt and a new key.
The next room was no better. It simply had not been even superficially clean and had similar problems to the first with broken fixtures and disgusting levels of cleanliness.
We went to ask for a refund, and after waiting half an hour for the manager we got our money back. There was no apology and he just couldn't care less- he just wanted to get rid of us as quick as he could.
Overall, an awful, awful hotel that ruined half a day of our trip. Honestly the worst hotel we have ever seen. Do not ignore the reviews on here and risk it. We were only stopping for one night and thought 'how bad could it be?'. Even if it is just a quick visit to Birmingham, do not take the risk like we did because it is cheap. We eventually found a nearby hotel for a similar price that was absolutely fantastic. Avoid at all costs!

This hotel is an absolute disgrace....
1 / 10
Jul 2008, Mr J Mansfield

This hotel is an absolute disgrace. We arrived to a reasonable looking reception, which made me believe the hotel would be a nice place to stay in, I was very wrong. When going up to our floor we found one of the lifts wasn't working and had to wait an age for the other lift, which literally stank of urine when we got inside. When we got to our floor, the smell was even worse, the carpet was stained everywhere and there were spare mirrors and signs thrown all over the place. On top of this, the signs that were supposed to guide us to our room were also thrown all over the place, which meant it took a very long time negotiating the maze of corridoors to find the room.
The room itself was unclean and had a strange stale smell. There was only one plug socket in the whole room, which i find unbelievable. The bathroom was acceptable, apart from the fact that the bath had a crack in it which leaked water all over the bathroom floor.
The view from our window was a small enclosed area of concrete walls which was about 1-2metres away from us and as high as we could see, so even on that bright sunny day there was no natural light coming into our room, we had to keep the room lights on, two of which did not work.
During our first night there was enormous banging noises, which woke me up 3 times and I am a very heavy sleeper, my wife was woken 5 times. We complained and asked to be moved rooms but the receptionist was acting as if she couldn't care less and told us there were no other rooms, which i find hard to believe.
On leaving we had to leave our luggage with the hotel because it was a few hours until our train arrived, when we came back to pick up our luggage we found one of the bags had had it's handle ripped of and there was also damage to the other handle, I was furious and asked to speak to the manager, who ACCUSED ME of damaging the bag. I explained that it was damaged when the receptionist took it out of the cupboard but he would not change his position and continued to throw accusations at me. When I asked him to bring out the receptionist to explain what had happened, the manager was even ruder than before and said "this conversation is over" and walked off. I couldn't believe how awful the customer service was. I complained using their website but they did not get back to me about any of the problems. All in all, this was the worst hotel experience I have ever had and I will NEVER be staying at another Britannia Hotel.

Reasonable room for a stay....
4 / 10
Jun 2008, ctpulley

Reasonable room for a stay. Definitely not the best but the location is good.
The breakfast is the biggest disappointment.
Luke warm and rubbery. (Buffet style).
Why don’t the cook fresh?
Just as easy or make very much smaller servings which are put out and top up more often.
Birmingham's nightlife is just along the road.
The canalside restaurants and bars are very welcoming.

Fantastic value accommodation - for...
8 / 10
Jan 2008, Miss HM Carter

Fantastic value accommodation - for £60 per room per night the room I occupied had two double beds, two bathrooms, fantastic views and an amazingly central location.
The Britannia was all of a 2 minute walk into the city centre, had its own restaurant, and bar that was reasonably priced. The Britannia also offered a reasonably priced room service menu that was served until late into the evening.
The Britannia doesn't have its own car park but there is an inter linking NCP car park that the hotel offers a 30% discount for their customers, making a 24 hour car park stay approx £9.00. Not bad for a day’s city centre parking!

What an absolutely diabolical hotel....
1 / 10
Dec 2006, Mr M J Beattie

What an absolutely diabolical hotel. I stayed here on business, as there was nowhere else. I would rather have stayed in a youth hostel, at least you know what you're getting.
This place was awful. On walking in, the revolving door felt like it was going to fall out, the floor was sticky, the staff look at you as if you shouldn't be there, and the one or two syllables directed at you are muttered under their breath.
The staff tended to direct what little attention they had, towards older customers (which is a flipping cheek).
I got into the shabby, slow lift, and when the doors opened I was greeted with the view of peeling wallpaper, dirty walls, and a bad-fitting carpet that looked like a picnic blanket. Once I negotiated the maze to my room, the reassuring sight of my kicked in door was my first impression.
The door handle had been drilled into a piece of painted plywood that replaced the broken area of my door. My door didn't lock properly, and despite my complaint, the staffs were less than helpful. Once in the room, it was like walking into hostel, but worse.
The wallpaper was peeling, there were brown stains on the walls, the blanket/duvet was scratchy, and smelled, the base of the bed was worn and torn, and what the hell is up with the lack of plug sockets?!
Having nowhere else to go, I thought I’d go and try the free wireless service, in the bar/lounge, provided by the hotel. After numerous funny looks from staff, and patrons I'm sure I've seen on the Jeremy Kyle show, I could find the network but the signal kept dropping. I went down to the reception to point this out and ask for help.
Again, the staff ignored me, even though the older patrons there were behind me in the queue. Once I had put my case across, the manager just looked blankly at me, said "I don't know how to fix it" and she walked off.
I asked another staff member if they had technical help, but the look on her face told me she barely knew they have Internet access at all.
All in all, a terrible experience. I have made numerous complaints, but have heard nothing at all from them. Obviously, the lack of customer service is extended.

When we arrived at reception we were...
1 / 10
Feb 2006, Mrs H Mitchell

When we arrived at reception we were pleased with our choice. We were seeing a show that night so decided to stay the night and this seemed a good hotel at the time. Supposed to be 4 star but I don’t know which hotel they were rating at the time but it certainly wasn’t this one.
On the way to the room the carpets were dirty like it hadn’t been hoovered. The room was so filthy, hadn’t been cleaned since the last people had left as there were hairs in the bath and shower gel all over the taps. Also the sheets were dirty, the cream lampshades were that old they were stained brown. We were only given 1 small towel between both of us, the window wouldn’t shut properly and was really cold. The room was just generally dirty and definitely had not been cleaned.
We didn’t have time to complain on arrival as our train had been delayed on the way which meant we had to go straight to see the show. When we go back I ordered room service after waiting half an hour for the kitchen to answer the phone and then another 40 mins for it to arrive.
We complained in the morning and the manager was very understanding, he gave us a complimentary breakfast but that was nothing to shout about. You could hear the chef singing really loud which is not really what you want to hear over breakfast.
All in all I wouldn’t go again, very unprofessional and I wouldn’t recommend the hotel. This is not cheap accommodation so I wouldn’t even suggest somewhere that reflected the price.
