Apollo Hotel Reviews

Feb 2006, Mrs P Seward

A room that saw its best about twenty years ago. Very tatty furnishings (old green nylon carpet, chipped yellowing melamine, strip lights). No shower. No curtains in bathroom. No heating in bathroom which had mismatched taps and old tiles and a piece of hardboard roughly... more

Fab for the money
Stayed for one night on Friday this weekend (after husband and our friend has laser eye treatment in Birmingham). Pleasantly surprised with the room - clean, tidy and fully equipped. We had a problem with the TV and within 5 mins, they brought up a new one! We stay in hotels at least twice a month just for fun and have been to all types and prices of hotels and many in Birmingham too. For £40 for a double room and £50 for a triple including breakfast it is excellent value for money and the breakfast was the best we have had for ages. Freshly made and cooked really well. The staff are really friendly in the dining room and couldn't do anymore for us. Ideally located for all the entertainment of Broad Street - a short taxi ride or a bus ride. All in all, comfortable, clean, serviceable & cheap - and the best breakfast around!
Pleasantly surprised
After reading some of the reviews we were pleasantly surprised that our stay at the hotel was so comfortable and enjoyable. All of the staff were extremely helpful and polite. The meals were excellent with good chioces in the evening and I could not fault the breakfast. Our room looked as though it had recently been redecorated, and was also very comfortable and clean. I would definately visit this hotel again if I was visiting the area.
For what you pay its fine.
This hotel is cheap. It is not beautiful it is not five star but for what you pay you would be hard pressed to find anything comparable. See it as just a bed for the night and then you accept its status.
Terrible not the word!
I booked this hotel for 3 nights and we checked out after one night it was that bad...rooms we're filthy and the bathroom was disgusting! had one of the worse night sleep in an hotel ever....whoever gave this 3 stars is having a laugh....
Impressive
Cheap internet deal. Very surpised by how spacious the room was for the money. It was very clean with a decent sized bathroom. Great breakfast, buffet so as much as you like and very helpful staff. Would definitely stay again.
Fantastic Stay - will be back!
I was a little concerned as I had read some negative reviews. However, We were extremely satisfied. As a regular user of hotels and other accomodation all over the Uk/Europe, We were very pleased with this property. The staff on reception were very good and met our requirements fully. The room was very clean and had everything one could want for a short break. The noise from the main road WAS NOT AN ISSUE, we stayed Saturday, Sunday & Monday night - no problem. The Breakfast was 2nd to none and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They were all pleasant and any request was welcomed. The food was of a very high standard and there was as much or little as one wanted We had a take-away in the room and plates/cutlery/napkins were given with good grace and a smile. Clean towels and bedding daily - and VERY reasonable. We would definitely use this hotel again and recommend to our friends.
pleasant hotel in good location
This hotel is in easy reach of motorway and a short bus ride into the centre. We found hotel staff v pleasant and were upgraded to suite unexpectedly. Spacious room and pleasant clean bathroom. Buffet breakfast hot and plentiful. Free parking a boom, ideal for short break .
Comfortable
I booked this standard room for one night via their website. They offered a discount of 40% off so I thought it was a bargain. On arrival the receptionist seemed unsure of what she was doing! She said she wasnt sure if our room was ready but didnt bother to check. She asked us if we wanted to take the key card then withdrew her offer! She couldnt tell us anything about the public transport or local attractions. The only thing she managed to do was to phone us a taxi but even then she was reluctant to book us the return journey as she said she had never done that before so in the end I just took the taxi number from her!! Back from our day trip we were tired and hungry. Different receptionist during the evening (thank god). We managed to check in fine. Our room was warm, cosy and clean. Had everything we needed inc tea's, coffee's and biscuits. Very happy overall with the standard of the room. Along the main road there didnt seem to be much on offer for somewhere to eat. There is a TGI Friday's right opp the Apollo and further down there was a ASK Pizza place but I guess you'd have to venture more into the city centre to find more restaurants. Buffet breakfast was also included in the price - Full english, also had a choice of cereal, juices, hot drinks and tinned fruit. Staff in the restaurant were very friendly and restaurant was clean. We checked out at 11am, same receptionist as the previous morning!!! We left, she said goodbye but not even bothered to look at us!!! Overall, the hotel and staff were great with the exception of the one receptionist who needs training in all areas of her work!!
Give it a miss
One hundred and thirty pounds a night should land you into a pretty ok hotel given it is not into High Street Kensington. The Apollo is on the main run into the heart of Birmingham and this is a busy road. Despite the complaints of trffic noise from some reviewers I found the sound proofing in the room from the road was pretty good. The main problem was that the Nutty Professor had slept in our Superior Double bed the night before!!! To say it sagged was an understatement, it was a tired matress, it has long since been a matress, it had joined the other matresses in the sky, it was......an ex matress. Also a double superior is merely a generous single bed, perfect for travelling Oompah Loompahs. The Who must have been on tour that last night as well, Pete Townsend must have punched the hole in the bathroom door, Keith Moon must have burnt the carpet and Roger Daultry must have broken the flip top bin and left it on its side across the bathroom floor. £130.......a real disgrace. We found out later that when there are no trade shows on at the NEC the prices drop by half, well if it was around £50-£60 normally you`d have put up with it. Breakfast was fine. Only one member of staff needed to amend her approach "box" she snapped, "I beg your pardon I don't follow" I replied, "box" she snapped again this time shaking a bin bag at me "oh my cereal box, well you should have said", "I did" she barked. Come on, what is wrong with "Can I take your cereal box from you if it is empty". Twelve miles up the road is the Holiday Inn on the edge of Wolverhampton, give that a go instead, give the Apollo a miss.
