Shopping in Birmingham
I've stayed in this hotel twice now and any time I return to Birmingham I intend to do the same. The first time we booked an executive room with Laterooms.com for around £120 and the second time I got the exact same room for £85 (pure bargain). The executive room is huge, massive bathroom and the most comfortable hotel bed I've ever slept in. I go to Birmingham to shop, I find gettting there very straight forward compared with other cities, this hotel is based in the very centre of the city, literally beside the New Street train... more
Worlds most expensive travelodge
Overpiced, noisy, old-fashioned, depressing, I could go on. This place is so bland and characterless. All the budget seems to have been blown on the reception area, but as soon as you turn the corner, you have wallpapered images of what the hotel aspires to be alike. On 1 of the nights I stayed, there was a party going on in one of the function rooms. It was so loud I could hear every word of every song. I called reception at midnight to complain and they said it sgoing on until 1a.m and there is nothing they can do!! They said they have... more
Nothing special
Stayed here for 3 nights on business. The location and the entranceway to the hotel are great, it is right by New St Station, and the shopping area of New Street itself. From the street entrance it seems very grand and swanky, imposing and traditional. Inside though in many ways it's just mediocre. My room was fine, fairly large (big bathroom) and clean, with a comfy bed. I had to ask for a duvet instead of a thin quilt, which they brought without a problem. The view from the window was pretty pish though - lots of extraction fan... more
Has it been improved since 2005?
I was prompted to write this review, after seeking a hotel for a conference in Birmingham this year. 2 years ago I stayed at the Burlington for 4 nights. I would find it difficult to say one good thing about it. £140/night for a poky single room should buy a reasonable level of customer service. However, what it did buy was check-in staff who failed to make eye contact, and recited parrot fashion exactly the same lines to all 4 people in the line in front of me. No offer of assistance with luggage. Breakfast (which I took at... more
A Super Stay at the Burlington
My family and I have just spent two nights at the Burlington and had a really lovely stay there. It was a rocky start because confirmation of our room requests never arrived even after two e-mails and two telephone call chases, so I was a little apprehensive that our stay would run smoothly. Happy to say that it did, we booked two interconnecting Executive rooms which were very spacious and clean with lots of character. The breakfast room was very busy but the food was of a high quality. We all ate in the restaurant on the Saturday... more
Nice hotel bad nights sleep
I stayed at the Burlington on a buisness trip. The hotel was great and the staff were very nice. The hotel management need to invest in some new beds. I stayed in room 312. It was compact being a single room and very clean. The shower was a bit of a nightmare as getting the temperature right was was a challenge in itself. Once in the shower it went from very cold to boiling. The bath was 3/4 in length. The bed felt a little rough when I sat on it but once I got in I discovered how awful it was. The springs were almost poking through and it... more
Wedding night
We got married in March at the Burlington and the venue was just perfect. There were a few problems in the wedding itself with the staff the Burlington had provided since they were reluctant to work but this is not what the review is about. The review is about the hotel rooms. I stayed in a standard room the day before the wedding and a suite on the wedding night. My parents also stayed in a standard room for the 2 nights. The standard rooms that i saw were huge. Very nice design, Large space and my parents had a lovely old style bath... more
Definitely above average
It's weird how some people love this hotel and others hate it. I thought it was definitely above average by my experience of city centre hotels in Britain. This was my first trip to Birmingham for many years and the centre has been much improved. Although I was working throughout my stay, there seemed a classy choice of shops and places to eat and drink. The hotel is in the middle of the Pallisades shopping arcade. It is a bit difficult to find as the entrance is not very obvious. It is also a bit of a rabbit warren inside.<br... more
Not such good value?
Stayed as part of business and facilitated a conference the next day. Room was cold, could not get heating to work; overlooked a lot of plant and equipment that was running during the night; the bed had seen better days and th controls to the shower had to be pinpoint right to avoid being frozen or scalded! I had one small bottle of beer in the bar and it cost £3.80! My room cost £105 during the week (B&B), so the biggest gripe is that it really didn't present value for money. Good location and if you can get a lower... more
