Great location for a weekend of shopping
from Jools010
My Partner and I recently spent one night at the Radisson Birmingham during a weekend shopping trip. We have previously stayed at The Hyatt when visiting Birmingham but unfortunately it was fully booked so we chose the quite recently opened Radisson instead. The location is fantastic, right between the Bullring and Mailbox and just a short walk down to the canal area. We were initially very impressed with the hotel. The Concierge was extremely helpful in directing us to the hotel and when we arrived he suggested we park directly outside the hotel rather than in the NCP car park. The Reception staff were very polite, friendly and helpful on arrival and throughout our stay. The bedroom we stayed in was the 'chic' style and was clean and pleasant with a huge comfortable bed. The toiletries in the bathroom were slightly lacking for this class of hotel. In general I would describe the style as minimalistic. We didn't have our evening meal at the hotel so I can't comment on the food in Filini. We had a few drinks in the bar though and found it very reasonably priced. Two glasses of red wine came to £7.90. Breakfast was fantastic - great selection, still fresh and hot despite us not eating until 11.30am! They serve until midday on a Sunday which is an added bonus. Despite the previous review, we were allowed into our room an hour early. I believe it to be the same as any other hotel, ie. if the room is ready and available then they will let you in before 3pm. We also requested a later checkout and they very kindly extended that to 3pm which was great. The sauna area is nice but unfortunately during our stay the sauna wasn't turned on on the two occassions we wanted to use it. We asked for it to be switched on, which it was, but it took too long to heat up for us to actually use it which was a shame. There was also NO hot water AT ALL on Sunday morning!!! I accept that things like that can go wrong in a hotel though so I just gritted my teeth and had an invigorating cold shower! All in all, if you can get a cheap rate or the Hyatt is booked up then this hotel is good. I would stay again but the Hyatt is still my first choice!
Very expensive travel lodge!!
from andrea77
Hotel was very clean and very modern. It is very close to the Bullring, mailbox and the Theatre but the trouble is the area around the hotel is very rough, we got harrassed several times by beggers, tramps and druggys on the way for evenings out. The staff were ok, but don't get there before 3pm, as they will not let you into the room early! had to sit and spend money in the bar for an hour!! The rooms are a bit small, but the beds are extremely comfortable, air con not very cool, very warm at night. Very expensive travel lodge, wish I'd booked somewhere else!!!
Good if very odd
from monali1
Very new, very modern, very odd. The best of Birmingham's options (ie. The Malmaison, The Marriott, The Hyatt) Many of the rooms have big concrete pillars in them and walls of floor to ceiling glass. If one is not looking for a cozy warm room or a trip into the Old World, one might rather get a kick out of looking onto all the lights of Birmingham while feeling a bit of display for the very same. The amenties come in bright fruity coffee cream containers, and you will find your own colgate toothpaste, if not the basic cotton balls. However, the hotel is not modern to the point of inconvenience. The hotel is a five minute walk to the Mailbox, a center filled with great restaurants, bars, and shopping set on the canals. Further, the restaurant in the Radisson can be considered a Birmingham destination in its own right. Additionally, the rooms are equipped with wireless internet, which is a big plus if working. Only warning...the foor in the gym slopes upward ever so slightly, so if one is out of breath after a minute on the trendmill, be not alarmed!

This is supposedly the best hotel in the city, and to be fair after delayed construction, and rushed completion... it wasnt bad!! The price of the rooms seemed somewhat inflated. On the plus side after a discrepancy over price on the website, i rang the hotel, only to be treated with contempt by the reception staff, i was later emailed back personally by the manager to offer me a complimentary upgrade, from a standard room to a business room, which was above and beyond anything we expected. The hotel itself was clean and tidy, with a very classy lobby and exquisite restaurant. Although somewhat close to a busy road. The staff (one receptionist aside) were all very efficient, and polite always keen to impress, and the manager made a point of talking to me while i was checking out to ensure id had a pleasant stay. The room was very well presented and themed, we stayed in a "fresh" room, the beds were comfy and views were amazing, although you did feel you were floating over the road 17 storeys below. The bathrooms were well sized and nicely finished with a good shower and ample towels. Finally the food!! Fairly basic breakfast buffet, although plentiful in supply. With a lot of variety. All in all not a bad hotel, bit steep on the prices, but very modern and well finished.
Couldn't really fault it

I took my fiance here for a surprise weekend in Birmingham and was worried it wouldn't live up to the Mal but thankfully I was wrong. Yes the car park is a bit dodgy but as long as you hold your nose till you get out of there then it's a pretty typical multi storey. We arrived at 1230 and our room was ready. We were offered a choice of 3 room types by the really friendly receptionist. He asked us if we wanted to have dinner but when we told him we had already booked elsewhere he told us our restaurant choice (Bank @ Brindley Place) was excellent. We had a chic room on floor 15 which was lovely, although the view was out of the city so not much to see really. The bed was huge, if a bit soft and the pillows were about 3 foot high! The bathroom was lovely and I liked the way they set out the toiletries. We had an ice bucket sent up with no grumbles and it came within 5 minutes, even though there was one in the room already (much too small for champagne!). The reception and bar staff were keen to help us out with places to go for a drink (Mailbox, Summer Row or Arcadian Centre were great) Breakfast in the morning was gorgeous. Even though we got there at 1030 everything was fresh and there was so much choice. The watiting staff were charming and really efficient which so often lets breakfast down in big hotels. This was my bug bear with the Mal so the Radisson won me over even more thanks to this. I really can't recommend this hotel enough. How nice to be in a gorgeous hotel at the weekend without it being full of shrieking hen and raucous stag nights. I don't see this hotel being their kind of place. I'll definitely go again.
Top Class Modern Hotel!
from Silvercoin
I stayed at the Radisson in Birmingham with a friend, we stayed in one of the suites. The suites have lovely entrances with a large cupboards and an exclusive bathroom (for the living room I assume) and the living room and bedroom are completely seperate. The living room was beautiful with fantastic views over the city, fantastic mini-bar facilities and even a coffee machine! Very modern with a classy LCD TV screen. The bedroom was very spacious with a LCD TV screen also, and large pillars near the massive windows all adding to the classy feel of the suites. Bathroom is excellent apart from being a little heated after having a shower/bath. The restaurant was very good with the staff very polite and the food was quality, and fast service. All in all a great top class modern hotel, I have stayed in many other 4 star hotels in Birmingham such as the Malmaison and the Hyatt and I would put this up there with the best. Recommended, would also recommend booking one of the suites which are excellent value for money.
Couldnt find a fault!
from Milky82
I honestly couldnt find a fault with the hotel or its staff and I work in a hotel myself so Im very critical! I stayed on a Monday night which is the busiest with business clients checking in, I was there for a leisurely visit as I havent been to the city for years. The reception staff were efficent in checking in and out of the hotel and the concierge staff were both very knowlegable with regards to directions and places to eat and drink. My room was on the 16th floor with fantastic views over the city unfortunately for Birmingham much of that is council flats however it was still great to be so high! I was very impressed with the rooms, very modern with flat screen tv, modern furnishing, (overpriced!) mini bar etc. The windows were fantastic - full length providing a stunning view and allowing the light into the room. There was plenty of choice at breakfast including vegetarian options, however I didnt eat in Filini on an evening or have any roomservice. I did however have a couple of drinks in the bar where the staff were very attentive and constantly looking busy cleaning the bar and checking with others in the bar. The hotel is in an ideal location from the station and the bull ring, and not far to walk to the mailbox or Broad Street. I will definately be returning again :)
Nice hotel, shame about the service
from roseyro
I stayed here for a night when I was booked out from another hotel in the centre. It's a great hotel in terms of the way it looks, lovely, clean bright room with great views of the city - but the service was shocking. Bar staff were rude, room service was a joke and reception just didn't know what they were doing. Also, no parking at the hotel - nearest car park is an ncp around the corner and for a lone female business traveller late at night, I don't think that bodes that well. Shame really, cos the hotel itself is rather nice.
nothing special

I'm not a fan of large boring corporate hotels - so was never going to love this hotel I suppose! There's nothing wrong with the place, but it's just boring. Location - five minutes walk from the station and shops; immediate vicinity is a mix of down-at-heel shops Reception - usual chrome, glass and neutral colours; efficient. Main Bar - ground floor next to reception, functional groups of square leather armchairs. Fine for a drink while waiting for friends. Expensive - two wines and a G&T cost £14.50. Very friendly bar staff. Room - the same as any other budget or mid price chain hotel - rectangle box, window one end, windowless en-suite next to the door. Bed was fine. Flat screen TV. There was nothing to dislike about the decor - my room and my friends' were decorated in white & cream and splashed of red. Very limited range of toiletries - small cartons of fluorescent own brand shower gels and shampoos. No free water in the room - although there was a well stocked minibar/fridge if you were happy to pay. We paid £100 per night for a double room over the weekend. Breakfast not included (some £12 extra I think) Summary - ok location, fine if you want the predicatbility of a chain hotel and don't mind feeling as if you're sleeping in a standard box in a converted office block; look elsewhere if you want any sense of character or cosiness.
Outstanding
from richardandfamily
Outstanding! Beautiful spacious rooms with panoramic views. Best of all is the restaurant. A hidden gem of Birmingham cuisine. Quality ingredients, well prepared and presented. Lovely restaurant staff. I have stayed several times in Malmaison and Hotel du Vin. Radisson just about edges it for me and is cheaper if you find the right deal on the internet. The only tiny fault is that parking is round the corner in a dodgy looking NCP car park. At the Malmaison, it is very convenient to be able to park under the hotel.
We paid for a suite. At arrival, the air conditioning in the room was on °C 27 degrees (F 80). The cleaning wasn't the level we paid for, nor the lower level mostly for bathrooms. We didn't find daily newspaper at arrival. We found bathrooms not cleaned, stained carpets,... more
