Great place to stay
from LizzyGNottingham
We stayed at the Kulube recently and found it a perfect choice. Ok its approx 25 min walk (manageable walk if you can handle the initial steep hill) into the centre of Kalkan. This is compensated by the perfect location. The views are amazing! The hotel grounds go down to the sea (easy access for swimming), where plenty of sun beds and shades are found, via the beautiful gardens. I wouldn't advise it for people who have trouble with steps. We arrived 2nd week into the season so the hotel was nice and quiet. This also enabled us to have a choice of room, we viewed 4 or 5. The rooms were very clean and comfortable, though basic. Good size, fridge, sofa/table and very comfortable bed. The staff were all very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Food was of a good standard and the pools were really clean. They run a shuttle bus into Kalkan 3 times a day. They don't run it back. Taxis cost us approx £4.50 before midnight and £8 thereafter. Kalkan is a great place to visit. Great people, really friendly and can't do enough for you. The restaurants are fabulous, too many to choose from and all wonderful. Above all, the toilets were all really nice & clean! You can spend from £3 to £10 for a main meal in the village. All good value and very tasty. Our favourite restaurants were Olive Garden, Daphnes & Belgins Kitchen. The great thing is that there are no lager louts or rowdiness and its kept its authenticity. We met some great people while we were over there and would definitely visit again. Kulube and Kalkan are very much recommended.
Great, quiet hotel
from selondontravellers
Found this hotel via Tapestry Collections and what a good find it was. The hotel is located a little way out of town but only a few minutes in taxi, more on this later. It is split into two sections. The upper part is where reception and pool is along with the majority of rooms. The section has the salt water pool, bar, restaurant and more rooms. The view is beautiful from almost every room and you can see the mountains and sea from rooms in the upper part of the hotel (200-400 I think). The staff are very friendly and especially the young 18 year old bar man. One night whilst we there he turned down a job in a 5 star hotel for double the money because he said he it wouldn't be as friendly as the guests at the Kulube. The pool leads onto the bar and above that is the restaurant. We only ate here one night because there too many restaurants in town to choose from. If you like good food this is place to come. The places we went to were. Salt and Pepper (on the harbour front), Daphne's and Aubergine, all very good food. From the bar/salt pool area it leads down a lot of steps to the sea with a host of loungers. There are various levels that have been cut into the rock each with great sunshine. There is also a bar about half the distance down the steps which does food. Lunch is ok but not great, shame it was not as good as dinner. This hotel is a bit out of town only due to the hills. You could walk to town but unless you are an olympic althlete I would get the free bus that the hotel operates or a taxi. Taxi's are expensive though at 14 Turkish Lira (£5.50, $11.50) for a 3 minute ride. All worth it though because the hotel has a policy of no children under 12, pure bliss!
A great relaxing holiday destination
from Najit
My husband and I were very impressed with the town of Kalkan, and with the Kalube Hotel, and would return, though not in July or August as the temperatures were extraordinary and really too hot to enjoy any activities during the day. I imagine that May or September would be the perfect time to travel there. The town of Kalkan is built on a very steep hillside and has hundreds of restaurants and many little shops to explore as well as a harbour and town beach. Some of the restaurants were very good and we would recommend Aubergine in particular for a great atmosphere, location and wonderful food. There are many lovely bars for pre-dinner drinks and we were grateful that none had loud music blaring or drinks promotions to encourage the lager louts. We saw no hooliganish behaviour, no football shirts and we were very grateful for that. The harbour attracted some beautiful yachts whilst we watched from the restaurants nearby, and the light balmy breeze and gentle music playing made the eveings in town very romantic and enjoyable. The Kalube Hotel has a beautiful setting and incredibly nice, helpful staff. The hotel rooms were quite basic though they were very clean and every effort was made to make them look as attractive as possible with fresh roses supplied each day! We found the air conditioning to be inadequate however, the balconies to be disappointingly small and the bed to be pretty uncomfortable, but we considered these things to be minor problems in the long run and loved our holiday there. The hotel restaurant is good but we found it hard to justify eating there more than once as there was such a great choice in town, and the nightly shuttle bus into town was so convenient. We never attempted the, at times, steep walk into town because the temperature stayed in the forties until the sun had set and then seemed to drop only to high thirties, but I imagine it is very do-able in other months. We travelled with Tapestry Collection and found them to be marvellously helpful, knowledgeable and friendly. They offered a good range of day trips though we only did the "Lazy Days At Sea" trip due to the heat. This was the best part of our trip and I would highly recommend it to anyone travelling to Kalkan. The boat took only 8 at a time and the skipper was brilliant fun, painting us with mud and encouraging us to dive for sea urchins and look for turtles in the amazingly clear turquoise sea. He really made the trip for us and also provided us with a very good lunch. We sailed around the bay and visited three little coves accessible only by boat, and spent a very happy day at sea. Although I realise it might sound quite unadventurous we would have done the trip more than once had we been able to as we enjoyed it so much. The hotel was the ideal location to spend the days as the two swimming pools were just what was needed when we needed to cool off. The sea was great for swimming though could suddenly become very deep in places so would not be ideal for those who are nervous of being out of their depth. The sea is so salty however, that you can just float without trying, and the clear water meant that it was perfect for snorkelling. There is no beach at the Kalube but there are lots of sunbeds arranged on terraces around the sea so that you can find your own private spot and simply jump into the sea when the mood takes you! There is a steep climb from the sea back up to the hotel but the pleasure of swimming in the sea made it worthwhile. There are fresh water showers near the sea and near both the saltwater and chlorinated swimming pools to stop you feeling sticky and we found the lack of sand to be a real bonus. In short, this was a wonderful place for a holiday and one we would return to (though the 2 hour transfer between the airport and Kalkan wasn't an experience to be savoured!)
Nice one

Loved the Kulube
from Holidaymaker02
We stayed in the Kulube for 11 nights in May 2007. Our stay was wonderful. The staff were kind, courteous and helpful at all times. We couldn't have had better treatment. We loved our room; spacious, clean, nicely decorated and with a great view of the sea and mountain beside us. The hotel was very quiet and not many guests when we were there so we had no problem with any noise from other guests/rooms etc. We cannot comment on how this would be when the hotel was full. Kulube is situated about 2km outside of Kalkan itself. We walked in and out of Kalkan everyday - it took about 20/25 mins leisurely stroll although when walking into Kalkan from the hotel, there is a mighty steep hill to climb, the sort of which we had not climbed before! However, we loved the walk. The hotel does provide a courtesy bus into Kalkan three times per day - 10am, 2pm and 7pm. Loved Kalkan itself - it has a wonderful choice of restaurants, all of which are of a very high standard. No loud bars or loud people. Its very relaxed. The jewellery shops are fantastic - definitely worth a look and a purchase! We did trips to Saklikent which is recommended, a boat trip, a bus ride to Kas, the next town, and a few other shorter trips. If however, you just want to lounge around the hotel, the hotel has platforms built into the rock, all the way down to the sea surrounded by wonderful plants - its very easy to find a little hideaway. A fabulous holiday, totally relaxing. Would definitely go back to Kalkan and the Kulube.
Another wonderful holiday
from JoanOEssex
Date: 29 May 2007 Reviewer: Tripadvisor Member, Essex We have just returned from yet another weeks holiday in Kulube, this time booked direct as Tapistry has now folded, through the hotel and Thomas Cook Fly. Our travel and transfer was totally stress free and the hotel as welcoming as always, although, not as busy as it normally is for this time of year. It is, in our opinion the best location in Kalkan affording as it does amazing views and direct access to the sea. The well tended gardens are also a delight with all the individual terraces leading down to the sea. Kalkan itself is just magical to walk round in the evening with all the terrace restaurants actually in the town and around the harbour. There is a new restaurant that I would like to mention to all those Kalkan foodies out there, of which there are many, and that is Ilyada. This is situated in the Harbour, so wonderful location, great food (we ate there twice in the week) the fish was amazing and the presentation was first class. The hospitality was at its absolute Turkish best and if you have been a visitor to the Kulube over the years, familiar, so if you are visiting Kalkan this year and enjoy all the wonderful restaurants that the town has to offer, this is yet another one that is a must add to your list. To anyone who is going this year, have a wonderful time, forget the diet until you come home, I am now looking forward to my return trip in October!
Great Base for Kalkan
from A TripAdvisor Member
We required a base for a two weeks trip to Turkey. We have been many times in the past, but not to Kalkan, so we ended up booking through the now Defunct Tapestry Holidays. As we were quite familiar with Turkey we picked up a car from the aiport and enjoyed a 2 hour drive down to resort. It really is easy and worth it if you want to do some sightseeing. I will comment later. We were met at the hotel reception and everything was well prepared, we were in advance (by at least 1 hour) of the main transfer but they were still organised. The rooms were a great size and standard with the maid service top drawer. Balconies were quite small and only just big enough to squeeze a couple of people on, but sufficient really. maid service could not have been better. The freshwater pool is located near reception and we fouind this to be the best option as it was quite and on a level with reception. The access to the sea was down 100 steps, OK for able bodied travellers but a no go for those with any real problem with walking. Having said that the sea was superb with a lovely aspect and worth every step down for those who found them OK. Food was always great, breakfast a mix of traditional turkish and European, the lunch a typical menu for Turkey (omlettes, burgers, salads etc). In the evening we only ate at the hotel twice; once in the main Restaurant and once for the Turkish evening. Both were great and highly recommended. The hotel is not within walking distance of Kalkan, the only real drawback to be honest. Having said that the hotel does provide a bus to resort twice an evening. Kalkan is really nice, not pumping music but a place to enjoy a great meal and chill as the sun sets. We hired a car, and from Kulube had many trips out. The advantage of a car is you can visit sights before the heat and before the coaches. Many time we were on our own. We visited very easily Saklikent Gorge (45 mins), we were first there for the day at about 9.30 and had the whole place to ourself, superb !! We also visited Tlos (1 hr) just up the road from Saklikent and sampled some trout at the lodges further up the road in Yaka Park. We spent 2 night in Fethiye (90 mins) and had a great time both in the town and in Olu Deniz - we stayed in Occakkoy a fabulous place in the middle of nowhere but next to everything !! Nearer to Kalkan we went to Xanthos (30 mins) and Letoon (30 mins) both great at 10,00 before anyone gets there (including the guard sometimes !!!) A further 30 mins down the road is Kas and well worth a visit. We spent a few days driving over the mountains above Kalkan, superb and worth the car hire. You will see real Turkey and a fabulous place that it is. To sum up, Kulube was a great hotel with great staff. A good base for some trips out in the region but not great for those with walking problems. Hope this has been of some help, always happy to help fellow Trip Advisor folks with specific questions. Have fun in Turkey !!!!
Unbelievable
from TravelLing75
I don't think I have the time to tell you how wondeful this hotel is. The location and the town of Kalkan were breathtaking and the value for money of such an exceptional holiday truly outstanding. I would go back here time and time again. This hotel and location cannot fail to appeal.
Kulube,Kalamar Bay, Turkey, our little peice of tranquility!!
from lizzlewis
This was a most fantatstic hotel, the staff were kindness themselves and took so much time to get to know all their guests. The location was truly amazing and after a long ride from Dalaman airport, when we arrived and saw the view that greeted us, we felt that we this was what dreams were made off!! We felt relaxed immediatley, as the whole atmosphere was quiet and completely unhurried. Having our very own area of sea to dip into, as well as 2 swimming pools, was a real luxury & was very welcome during a hard days sunbathing. The food was excellent and the drinks were equally as good. There is nothing quite like a really fresh orange juice and ice, that is freshly squeezed before your eyes, to quench your thirst!! Our biggest sadness is that we have heard today that Tapestry has ceased trading, as the staff were so helpful and again, bent over backwards to help any guest. Nothing was too much trouble. We had infact on our return, booked to stay at The Kulube again, next year, but now to no avail! I'm sure many others will share our sadness at Tapestry's demise. But long live The Kulube!!
Wonderful Hotel in a truly beautiful location
from mrsdrake77
We can't believe that no-one has reviewed this WONDERFUL hotel already! We spent a week at the Kulube on a B&B basis - which we booked through Tapestry Hoildays. We would definitely recommend both Tapestry Holidays and the Kulube hotel to anyone who is looking for a relaxing break, with sunshine, great food and a beautiful location. The Kulube Hotel is situated about a 45 minute walk (or 5-10 minute drive) from the pretty harbour side town of Kalkan. Kalkan itself is a great place to eat, drink and explore. Lots of the restaurants are situated on roof tops, overlooking the harbour. ALL the restaurants we dined in were of a suprisingly high standard. We would especially praise The Gironda Restaurant and Coast Restaurant - where we ate outstanding meals with fantastic service. The bars & restaurants are all quite quiet- not a place to go if you want clubs or loud music. The Hotel itself was clean, well furnished, wonderfully located - with fantastic staff, who can't do enough to make your stay memorable. Our room was large - with 2 shower rooms, a sitting area, 2 small balconies, air conditioning and a view of the sea. It was immaculately clean, as was the whole hotel inc. swimming pools & all communal areas. The hotel provided a useful bus service into the main town 5 times a day - and a taxi back cost about 7 lira (£3 ish) before 12am - and slightly more after midnight. As well as 2 swimming pools, there was also a beautiful cove (beach area - with no sand) - where we jumped straight into the sea and did some snorkelling (there was also a variety of other watersports - organised by the beach club next door) Sun beds were plentiful - meaning you did'nt have to get up at the crack of dawn to put your towel on a lounger! Breakfasts, served by the pool, were typically turkish (bread / meats / cheese / fruit / omlette etc) - served between 8 & 10 - we ate very well every morning. The hotel is for adults only - and had a very relaxing feel to it. We were one of the youngest couples there (I'm in my 20's and my husband is in his 30's) - so I would say that anyone looking for a louder busier holiday may not enjoy it as much as we did. We would give the hotel and resort 10/10 on all aspects - and would even consider returning to the Kulube (not something we normally do). We'll definitely use Tapestry Holidays again - check out their website - its very good and has some good last minute deals.

What an amazing place, when they say un-commercial Turkey they mean it. The locals are so friendly and the hotel staff and owner make you feel welcome from the moment you step off the coach. What an amazing way to spend a week. And staykalkan staff make our holiday perfect... more
