Lovely apartments. Could not believe the size of the apartment we were allocated which overlooked both the pool and the sea. Koutoulafari is busy enough for a decent selection of tavernas and restaurants but by no means crowded. Although we went in May which was probably lower season, it was just perfect for us as a couple or for families looking for enough diversions but not the tack that you might find if you walk down the hill about 20 mins to "Star Beach" and the like. Perfect Greek town. Easy to walk into other villages in the hillside in the afternoon or evening. Would recommend to couples and families.

Great to see all the excellent reviews of the Sunrise. We've had 2 great holidays there, but haven't been for a couple of years. Have booked for July 09, can't wait to get back there, especially as 10 out of 10s show that they clearly haven't lost their touch!

The view was spectacular, in front was the Hersonnisos and the beautiful sea and behind us was the mountains, the apartments were clean and well kept and the pool and garden well taken care of. Had a wonderful stay at the sunrise, the family were lovely and there wasn't a lot of noise at night. There was an added bonus of a shop just across the road which wasn't busy. The village at night was very picturesque and the food was excellent. My favourite holiday to date. Will def go back there again.

These apartments are fantastic!! Could not fault anything about my stay! I stayed for 2 weeks and still didnt want to come home. The apartments are spotless and the maids work so hard. The family that run the hotel are so freindly and after meeting you once never forget your name they cant do enough for you. The only downside to the holiday was the steep hill that you had to trail down and with 40 degrees heat it can be quite a struggle. There is a lovely supermarket and bakery just across the road from the apartments that youcan get lovely fresh bread every morning and cheap beer dont pay the hotel prices!! The apartements are very spacious we had an upstairs where the bedroom was and at night it was boiling so i would recommend the air con which is about 7 euros a day dont pay for the fans as they just circulate warm heat. If your a youngster or a family you will love star beach. But i preferd the village which is a bout a 2 min walk from the hotel. Overall a fantastic hotel will definatly be returning back next year..

Sunrise Appartments is a lovely place to have your holiday, it was our first time on Crete and definatley not the last. Sunrise is well situated, yes .. up a hill but if you cut throught the all inclusive hotel down the road from the Rainbow supermarket it is a far easier walk, and a free shuttle bus runs you to Star beach.
Star Beach provides a great service and facitities for all the family, it is quite over priced but you can always stock up in their little shop en-route and save a fortune.
Do take a good supply of high factor sun lotion with you, it is VERY expensive to buy over there.
The bus service is good and regular, its about 5 euro return to Heraklion, we also got the bus to Malia... Big mistake, it is an absolute dump and the beach is about a mile and a half walk and is quite horrible, full of rocks and rocks and rock pools.
Undoubtedly the best restaurant is Sergiani's in Koutouloufari, fantastic service, clean, friendly, very reasonably priced, free puddings and enough choice to last you a month!
We tried others, Gallini was very nice, a bit more expensive and classy but you came out still hungry, Emmanuel (opposite Sergiani's) was the worst, i had a pile of slop which was quite vile and full of fatty meat, our son was asleep in the pushchair and when we got our bill it had 3 items we were unsure of, when questioned the manager said it was a cover charge for the use of the chairs table and table cloth! We were shocked and a a bit annoyed as we seemed to have to even pay to park a pushchair there too, the manager told us this was normal ! OK!
You can get some nice Jewellery in the shops, but do haggle especially for cash, the first shop you reach is reasonably priced but the one the other end of the little town is about 3 times the price!
Whilst on our 2 weeks break we found that this area of crete perfect for all the family, there is no noise or yobs anything to ruin your holiday. we look forward to returning there soon.

My family and I have been visiting Crete every year since 2002 and we have stayed in Sunrise every time, simply because it's everything you could ask for. The apartments are very clean and have everything you need (the Sunrise family stock your fridge with basic necessities for your arrival). They are set in an ideal location in the lovely village of Koutouloufari. There are plenty of lovely restaurants and little shops and the village is only a 10min walk from the town of Hersonissos (so you have the best of both worlds as Hersonissos gets pretty lively at night). The Sunrise family are just lovely - friendly, helpful and very attentive - they couldn't do more for you! There is a BBQ night on Thursdays and Quiz night on Fridays. The pool is a good size and very clean and there are plenty of sunloungers.

Just back after our 9th time at the Sunrise and booked again for May which says it all.
The family are lovely all very friendly even the gardener playing tricks on us.
Very clean and lovely pool. A great shop at the bottom of the drive which has everything in it. Jean and Carole very helpful there.
Can’t wait to go back.

We found these apartments to be clean and spacious. The family who ran the apartments were very helpful and friendly. They put on a BBQ on a Thursday (which you have to pay for) and Friday is quiz night. The pool is an average size and very clean with plenty of sunbeds.
There is a supermarket straight across the road which has everything you need at reasonable prices.
The old town is just a 2 minute walk away which is beautiful! There are loads of restaurants to choose from and some little shops like the everything 1,50euro shop! (Full of rubbish but great for souvenirs!)
The beach is a 15 minute walk downhill and on the way back up it’s a bit of a killer, the hill is quite steep. There are plenty of taxis about and it cost about 4 euro to get back up the hill for those lazy days! Hersonossis town is also a 15 minute walk away downhill and is very busy with loads of shops and bars.
On a night it does get a bit rowdy around all the popular bars.
I thought the place was beautiful overall just a bit too far from the beach and town for my liking but great if you want a quiet sunbathing holiday.

As always we had a fantastic time. BBQ night coincided with both our friends and my husband’s birthdays which added to the celebrations. The sunrise family make us feel that we really are part of their family making us welcome every time.
The apartments are spotless and have a fantastic view over the bay. Restaurants are excellent, only a few minutes walk away. Missing the Cretan hospitality, we have already booked for next year!

Just returned from a two week break at Sunrise apartments. It was absolutely brilliant.
The rooms were fantastic and the settings brilliant. We had a studio with a sea and pool view.
The staff especially Aris and Yiannis were very helpful and the service was spot on.
Try the bakery at the bottom of the road, the croissants are great !!!! There is also a fully stocked supermarket and the owner Jean is lovely.
Koutouloufari is very beautiful its got lots of tavernas - Sergiannis in the village square is a must and also Mezes by Christine and Alex.
If you like a chilled out time try Casa Nostra bistro, the rose wine is fantastic and Manos the proprietor is lovely.
We are going back next year as it was so good this year.

Our apartments were changed by Kosmar at the last minute to the Sunrise. The apartments are basic but clean and the owners are friendly enough. There is a supermarket across the road and a few restaurants nearby (don't be fooled in to thinking the restaurants in Koutouloufari are cheaper than in Hersonissos centre because the one we went to was overpriced and nothing special). The Sunrise is ok if you like to stay around the pool on your holiday.
If, like us, you like the beach and to see a bit more action, the Sunrise is probably not for you. Kosmar describe the Sunrise as being a 15 minute stroll to the beach, which it is, on the way down the hill. On the way back up however it is more like a 30 minute hike up a mountain, which in the heat of Crete in July is no joke. Me and my boyfriend resorted to hiring a 'death trap' of a scooter to save us from dying of boredom in Koutouloufari.
The other annoying thing at the Sunrise were the maids. Don't get me wrong, it is good to have your apartment cleaned every day but we were rushing around every morning to get out of our room before the maids came.
To be fair, had the Sunrise apartments been in Hersonissos we wouldn't have had a problem. Quiet Koutouloufari just wasn't our cup of tea and the location of the resort spoiled our holiday a bit. If Kosmar had placed us near to our original choice of apartments in Hersonissos we would have had a great time.
Check out the aquarium in Hersonissos, its really small, no bigger than a house really but you only pay 5 euros to get in and then you can go as many times as you like throughout your holiday. All the animals are rescued animals. The people who work there are really nice and they let you hold the lizards and snakes. its a good place to go on your last day while you wait for your coach - good for kids.

We enjoyed two lovely weeks with the Sunrise Family (although it got blooming hot...47 degrees!)
I'm trying not to say the same as everyone else, but will probably repeat a bit as it was just so good
As everyone else has said - the perfect position for a short stroll to some fantastic restaurants, the sunrise family, the resort bar and can whip you up some fairly lethal but yummy cocktails, and there are a few good bars within walking distance too.
The main town of Hersonisos, is as everyone else has said a fair walk down hill (we mostly used a taxi, €5, as it was too hot to walk it) which is crammed with tacky tourist shops, but a giggle if you fancy some lively nightlife.
Plus all the boat tours go from the Hersonissos harbour. We'd definitely recommend the tour with the 'Tiki, Tiki' man - you can book it from the Dutch pancake shop in Koutouloufari and they'll collect you at 11ish in a minivan and take you down to the harbour. You have a half day trip (which to be honest doesn't take you anywhere earth shattering, but it's very relaxing and the guys that run the tour are very entertaining) and then they bring you back, all for €15 each which is a bargain in my books.
I'd also recommend getting up into the hills (by air conditioned car) as there are some stunning views, plus you can potter around locally and find the Golden Beach behind the Hotel Maris in Hersonnisos, which although a slightly shingle beach is very pretty and very relaxing.

We got there at 6 o'clock in the morning and the sun was rising. When we looked out of the balcony we were over the pool and we had the most amazing view of the mountains either side and the sea directly in front.
The apartment was clean. It had storage but no drawers. The bathroom was small but it served its purpose. The kitchen had a fridge with freezer compartment, hob, toaster, kettle and plenty of utensils with a price list for each thing if there were any loss or breakages! It was very hot, with no air, and the air conditioning was an extra - charged at 6 euros per day or a fan for 2 euros.
The staff were friendly and helpful. They were assertive towards people’s behaviour too - on our second night we had some very noisy new people in but they gave them a warning promptly and there was no noise after that. Everywhere we went the people spoke very good English so there were no communication problems.
The location of the apartments is good for people who are going to hire a car or enjoy walking. The village is 2 minutes round the corner with lots of restaurants and a great friendly atmosphere on a night. The village is extremely clean and traditional with beautiful little streets and buildings. It was a little too far out from the beach for us, it took about 15 minutes but the way back was a killer walking uphill in the blazing sun.
The town of Herssonsis is about 15 mins walk away and is filled with clothes shops, gift shops and bars. On a night out it is mad on the front, the main street is full of bars and takeaways, a bit like a small Malia or mini Ibiza. It cost 6 euros in a taxi back to the apartments.
The downside to this accommodation was that we arrived at 6am on Saturday morning and weren't due to leave the apartments until 23:45 the following Friday night. They told us we had to be out of our accommodation on at 12 midday on the Friday, so we had to hire another room to get a shower etc for 25 euros. This should have been included as we didn’t have a full week in the end.
All in all it was lovely accommodation with a decent sized pool and plenty of sun beds. I would go to Crete again but would stay closer to the beach and bars of Hersonissos.
