I was surprised to find that the smaller details one might expect from a 4* hotel were sadly lacking i.e. only one towel and dressing gown for us to share and old cobwebs on the windows. Having mastered the TV controls it was disappointing to find only 4 watchable terrestrial channels and Sky Sports (in the days of FreeView and given that the Plasma is the key feature in the room), it was more disappointing to find the video we borrowed was unreadable in the DVD player provided. The following morning, having ordered a newspaper the previous evening it was disappointing to be delivered the wrong paper (News of the World in lieu of the Sunday Times) and without any offer to rectify the situation. Having attempted to give feedback, no mechanism is available on either in the room or on the website - so I decided to leave it publicly where it might be found.
In order to try to keep the balance, the room was exactly as described (if not more than a little warm) and I was kept well informed - 2 letters on arrival at reception wishing me a pleasant stay and a further letter delivered pre-dinner wishing me a pleasant night. The setting is simply beautiful and we enjoyed a hearty Scottish breakfast before setting off.
The saving grace - the Ushers Restaurant - Fine dining at it's best. It must be amongst the best food I have sampled across the globe and with exceptional service - truly unhurried and exquisite.

I stayed here for a business weekend and it was fantastic and I would highly recommend it.
The staff were great and really did make you feel welcome.
The rooms were amazing and the whole style is very inviting. It is definitely a place that you can go to relax and enjoy feeling special.
The food was a big hit when it came to our party, it was delicious, and I’m so glad that we went half board. If you do get the chance to go, you will not be disappointed so get it booked.

Very nice place. this was our second "Handpicked" group Hotels stay. We had stayed in Edinburgh earlier in the week and took a cab out for Xmas eve and Xmas day. The cab fare with tip was 24 pounds. not cheap.
We had not choice to stay put. The rooms were incredible. Had one of the modern rooms for the two teen boys and the wife and I had the Cramond suite. Great space. Food was wonderful and the staff very helpful. Next time would make sure I had a car so I could get out a bit more.

Norton House Hotel was chosen for my mums 60th Birthday as somewhere extra special that would allow us to visit Edinburgh during the day but relax and enjoy food, fine wines and a cosy atmosphere on the evenings.
We were not disappointed. The welcome was warm, friendly and all the staff were more than helpful where nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms were wonderfully styled - contemporary, but rich in colour and perfectly presented. You almost wanted to recreate the rooms at home they were that welcoming. The 42" plasma screen, luxurious bathrooms and comfortable beds with duvets just topped the rooms off.
What made our special break was the Brasserie - the food, service and overall atmosphere. It couldn’t have been more perfect. The staff couldn’t do enough for us, the food was literally to die for - expertly cooked, presented and completely divine to taste.
An extra special hotel tucked away in the country just minutes from the centre. A real haven of luxury, with a warm home like welcome.
We will be going back in 2006 - just can't decide how many times!!!
