I stayed at this hotel at the beginning of October with my husband and friends. We found the hotel excellent. The rooms were clean and spacious. The maids cleaned the room 5 days a week. The swimming pool was good, just a little cold when you first got in it. The bar was excellent. There was such a friendly feel to the hotel all the guests got to know each other. It was only a short walk to the nearest shops and restaurants. We had visions of it being really out of the way. I would certainly book to go here again. Excellent value for money.

Just wanted to let people know that despite some unfavourable reviews left on this site about Hilltop Gardens, my partner and I stayed there a few weeks ago and loved it.

I agree that it would have been ideal to have air conditioning, as at times at night it was difficult to sleep in the heat, but that was the only issue we could complain about in our apartment. It was comfortable, clean and provided a beautiful view of the sun setting into the sea each night.

Hilltop Gardens & Apartments are well situated, with only a short walk to local shops, bars and restaurants (and an unofficial bus stop at the bottom of the road to take you to Paphos Harbour or Coral Bay for a flat fare of 50p).

The pool bar was reasonably priced with a variety of drinks and food and friendly staff who were flexible with those who wanted the bar to stay open a bit longer than planned at night. May I also say that they each deserve a medal for tolerating the only aspect of our stay which was unpleasant - drunken British slobs who insisted ruining several of our precious nights away yelling and arguing at the tops of their voices in the early hours, waking residents up sometimes several times a night as a result (made me ashamed to be English).

My partner and I would definitely stay in Paphos and Hilltop Gardens again in the future and thoroughly enjoyed Cyprus. We can also highly recommend flying to Egypt for the day - it was well worth every penny we paid and was a wonderful chance to experience another culture that we will never forget.

We have just come home from Cyprus. The island is beautiful we had a fantastic time. The apartment is basic, cleaned most days. The people are friendly; the only thing we moaned about was NO AIR CONDITIONING. This has to be changed, as people will stay elsewhere. My partner, 4 children and I were on the ground floor so we couldn’t sleep with the windows open or patio doors. We hired fans but they don’t do much. The country is very hot; we went on the 31 Aug and returned 14 Sept.

Apart from that the place is quite nice, swimming pools are nice and clean the place as a 2 star rating and that’s what you get. All I wanted was somewhere to sleep that was safe and clean, that’s what we got.

We went to Egypt on a cruise Monday to Wednesday. As the ship had air con so we could all have a good sleep. Although seeing the pyramids etc was great you have to walk a bit for eating out and drinking. The people are great and are nice to children.

People told me Cyprus was expensive, a holiday can be as dear as you want it to be. We found places that you can have 3 course meal £5.95, even lobster from £20.00. We tried Cyprian food; we enjoyed Kelftico which is lamb cooked in clay ovens for 12 hours. We tried lots but for people that miss things from home you can find McDonalds and Pizza Hut towards Paphos harbour.

My new husband and I recently went on our Honeymoon to the Hilltop Gardens self-catering apartments in Paphos, Cyprus. Firstly, we booked with a Thomas Cook high street shop.
The flight is around 4 hours and was uneventful apart from a little turbulence over The Alps, but when we arrived my luggage did not appear...until we were the last people at the carousel, and the baggage handlers carried in something that looked like it had been chewed up by lions and spat back out - yes, this was my case! a great start to out honeymoon...we’re still waiting for a full explanation but it seems my case got run over somehow in-between check-in and the hold of the plane. Hmmm. 99% of all the clothes, cameras and cosmetics inside the case were shredded beyond rescue, so we spent the first day of honeymoon in Cyprus buying new items as neither Thomas Cook nor our Barclays insurance would give us any monetary or other help 'in-resort'. Well! At least Thomas Cook paid for our taxi to the resort... So, lets get past the initial disaster shall we?!?
Once the dust had settled we settled in for a good week’s fun. The apartment was bigger than we thought it would be (having been told a 'studio' it actually had a full living room with sofa, dining table, coffee table & 2 comfy chairs; a kitchenette, with all the bits and pieces you would need and a nice sized bedroom and BEST of all a lovely balcony furnished with white basic table and 4 chairs overlooking the palm-tree-surrounded pool) so this was encouraging. The apartment was very clean, with a comfy large bed, pristine white sheets, pure white walls, shiny cream tiles covering the floors and parts of the walls with no cracks, mould or other horrors anywhere. The bathroom had a decent shower too. Note, in Cyprus you must NOT put toilet tissue down the toilet as their toilets block IMMEDIATELY! Eek. Use the bins provided...
We were told in the welcome meeting that cleaners would come and empty the bins, clean the floors and change the bed sheets and towels around 2-3 times in the week that we were there but they actually came every day except one, which was fantastic. There was a good mix of people in the resort, couples around 28-30 like us, young families and some older folk though not many.
The pool was clean and a fair size, with decent loungers surrounding it. There was a nice pool bar as well, open till around 1am, with tables inside and outside next to the pool; they had a full menu but we didn’t really eat here except for a houlumi and lounza (thick cheese and smoked ham) toasties late one evening, which was well made. The only complaint we heard about the pool from the other holidaymakers was that it closed at 7pm! (It did look tempting late at night I must admit, but the staff were stern about it as it could have disturbed some of the apartments nearby.)
There are many fantastic things to do in Cyprus, although the heat at this time of year is almost unbearable, we would NOT recommend sunbathing for hours at a time in July, even the natives were telling us that it was freakishly hot. Find a nice table outside a cafe near the sea under an umbrella and have a nice beer - Keo is the best local lager, crisp and cool - and you’ll be fine. We got a fantastic tan just from walking around the sights, i.e., the Harbour, Paphos Castle and best of all, the archaeological sites.
If you go to Paphos, do not simply spend all your time on the beaches, shops and bars of the Harbour (although some of your time spent doing this will certainly not be wasted!), please, please go and see the amazing 2nd Century floor mosaics, they are amazing, emotive and beautiful; also the roman houses and amphitheatre that partially survives and is so evocative of past times that you will sit on its steps and imagine yourself in a toga watching some ancient battle or trial. Wonderful stuff. And can you believe it only costs £1.50 to go and see this??
On that note, Paphos is not expensive, around £1 for a pint of Keo, 50 cents for the bus all over town, about £22 for a really good (& huge!) meal for two in a good restaurant WITH wine. Coral Bay is just up the coast and worth the 20-minute bus trip (50 cents!) for its lovely but small beaches, and better restaurants than the Harbour. Go to Kleo's Cocktail Disco Bar for fantastic cocktails with sparklers and 70's disco; Hippopotamus for a classy lunch and The Coral King for the largest most special Meze you’ll ever have. Do not eat British food whilst in Cyprus when there are things like Meze to try - literally translated it means 'titbits'; like tapas it is many small bowls of all the traditional Cypriot dishes. Yum! In The Coral King in Coral Bay it was around 24 generously sized dishes, you really need to be hungry to tackle this I warn you. From the most beautiful dips with hot pitta bread to proper Greek Salad to real kebabs and Stifado (beef in red wine stew), this is how to really sample Cyprus.
We had an excellent week here, and would recommend Hilltop Gardens as long as you don’t mind not being in the centre of town. This is the main reason it loses points, as the staff are friendly, it has a shop on the resort open till 8.p.m., a bar open till 1.a.m., TV room and a nice pool area, but it’s 25-30 mins walk into town along a long, dusty desert road and when its 45+ degrees out there that’s a very hard walk indeed. We didn’t mind getting the bus (10 mins walk from hotel) or occasionally a taxi (£4), as the buses were every 20 mins and the taxis very reliable; but some people would be better off with a hotel in the Harbour or surrounding area. It also loses points for not having air-conditioning, as I think this should be automatic in a country with the level of humidity that they have. The fact that you can hire a fan from reception is not enough (although only a pound a day).
All in all, go to Cyprus; the people are friendly and you’ll soon get into the laidback way of life (it’s too hot to do anything else!) Enjoy.

We found Hilltop Gardens Apartments to be a very pleasant place to stay. The staff were always on hand to help if there was a problem. The pool was clean and for those who enjoy late nights the bars was open until the early hours or until empty.

The accommodation was very acceptable and was cleaned regularly (at least 4 times a week) and there were plenty of fresh towels. The owners of hilltops are actually on site and very friendly, not something you get from the larger hotels. Do not be put off by previous reviews, these people obviously wanted 5 star treatment for the price of 3 star. I would definitely go back!

Was a bit unsure about going here after having read previous reports, but we were pleasantly surprised.
Okay the Hilltop Gardens aren't 5-star but we didn't pay 5-star prices (and anyway 5-star were a rubbish 80's band). The place was clean and everything worked - if your looking for somewhere to be your base while you explore Paphos and the local area it's fine.
When we first arrived we had a problem with the locking of a patio door on our appartment, but we were moved when we complained and the new appartment was fine.
The staff are all very friendly and the quality of food served in the bar is very good. The shop, although slightly more expensive then the local 'supermarkets' 10 minutes walk away, is not the giant rip off that some people have written.
Our apartment was cleaned 10 times during our 2 week stay (not Sundays & not on cleaners day off). We had plenty of clean towels & bed linen supplied.
The pool was fine, cleaned daily and used by loads of people staying there - nobody was complaining about it.
We were there in May and the weather was good all the time but temperature wasn't into the 30's yet - this meant the lack of aircon wasn't an issue but I guess it could be if you stayed in a really hot month - you have been warned!
Tips for a successful stay - 1) don't bother cooking in your apartment, eat out - its cheap and theres loads of good local places:try Karlinas & the Outback, 2) due to location you will probably won't want to walk into Paphos - either get a bus (short walk and 50 cents) or get reception to get you a taxi (agree price of about £4 cypriot before hand) 3) visit the waterpark & massive go kart track in paphos 4) play pool with Chris from the bar, your bound to win 4) on returning home make sure the idiots at Thomas Cook airlines remember to load your luggage onto the plane (although I did only have a 48 hour wait for it to be couried to my front door).

Having read other reviews of the Hilltop Gardens Apartments (after we had booked) it was with some trepidation that we arrived there in April 2004.
How pleasantly surprised we were. This place was not in the least little bit like the Hilltop Gardens Apartments of previous reviews.
Everything was quite clean. The rooms spacious & reasonably furnished.
We did have a broken toilet seat in our Apartment, but this was replaced within an hour.
We found the staff to be friendly, helpful & polite.
Our only criticism would be its location as it was a 20 to 30 minute walk into Paphos, or a local taxi ride at a cost of Four Cypriot pounds.
All in all we enjoyed our stay at Hilltop Gardens & would advise anyone not to be put off by the previous reviews.
Perhaps there have been problems in the past, but not now!!

The Hilltop Gardens Hotel Apartments is the worst place I have ever stayed in my life. Quite simply, if you are reading this review BEFORE you have booked your holiday, consider yourself very lucky.
I cannot stress enough, this place is absolutely disgusting.
The staff are some of the most hostile, unfriendly, people in the industry.
We checked in to this stinking place, only to be met by at least six, stone faced, staring men standing in the reception area. These turned out to be staff working at the hotel.
Just about every person on our coach, had the same complaint.
There was very rarely any hot water, the bath and shower were completely delapidated, and did not function well at all. The toilet, well unless you have a very strong stomach, you would almost want to throw up at the site of the bowl. The cleanliness of the whole place was so appaulling, it was beyond belief. The towels and bedding stank. You are lucky to get a change of towels in a week!
The heating was completely useless, with airlocks all over the system. The radiators were barely warm.
The bar area is completely filthy. No air extraction, the place was thick with smoke and cooking fumes. No entertainment of any description. A pool table was available, if you could breath to play on it! A few 20 year old arcade games stood covered in dust, all switch off and unplugged.
The staff did not seem to bother about any of the problems at all. A couple were moved, only to have the same problems in the next apartment.
If you had to mention a problem of any sort, your card was marked from then on the looks from the staff were very intimidating.
We booked our holiday with Olympic. The rep was excellent. I feel sorry for any of the reps that have to take people to Hilltop Gardens. I strongly feel that a quality operator like Olympic, should not be offering this run down, health hazard to its customers. I will be telling them so very shortly.
If you're like me, you'll be looking forward to your holiday, and let me tell you Cyprus is most beautiful. But listen and listen well, if you book a stay in the Hilltop Gardens, you will be VERY DISAPPOINTED to put it mildly! Please, I wouldn't wish this place on anyone, so look elsewhere, there are lots of places to stay in Paphos.
If you are reading this already having booked your holiday at Hilltop, try to upgrade with the booking agent. How ever much they charge you extra.... it will be worth it.

We would advise anyone against booking a holiday at Hilltop Gardens. The apartments are filthy, run down, non-existent of proper maintenance.

The complex stinks of sewage, the staff, with the exception of the lovely Philippine girl on the bar, are rude, unfriendly, uncivilised, unhelpful. You are lucky if the cleaners change your towels or bedding more than once a week. Don't eat there. Very unhygienic. We were moved three times as we complained. Each apartment was filthy. the sink in one bathroom couldn't be used as water flooded floor as waste pipe broken, the toilet in third apartment wouldn't flush, so we had to use the one and only pan each time anyone used the loo, to fill the cistern.

The blankets stunk like nothing on earth, the cooker was rusty. the one and only knife supposedly for cooking purposes, was blunt, no tea towel, toilet thick with hard brown stain...hadn't seen cleaning materials in years, as with bath, shower curtain held up with what looked like toilet roll wedged at ends. Walls filthy, balcony dangerous, one of wooden slats completely loose at bottom with rot. Bloody awful.

Loads of people complaining, thereby staff treated you with even more contempt. Filthy looks etc..even to children. another couple complained about gas cooker leaking, one couples cooker didn't work full stop. floor hadn't even been swept on arrival. patio doors filthy. even had old luggage stickers stuck on them.

No entertainment whatsoever, any planned was cancelled the night before. no curtains in children's bedroom and full opening windows which are dangerous for small children. concrete below. no smoke alarm in third apartment. outside stairs light not working sometimes, very dangerous.

Our stay in Cyprus was ruined by this hell hole accommodation, talk about fawlty towers! we spoke to others who had paid far less than us but had immaculate accommodation in Paphos. Shame on you Thomas Cook for allowing such shabby treatment of your customers by using such disgusting places!

Overall I thought that hilltop gardens were good.... The apartments were clean and tidy and there was a change of towels and bed covers twice a week.
The downfall of the apartments was that it said that there was air-conditioning in the apartments. Well the only air conditioning that was there was fans which you had to pay to hire..
Another downfall of the whole place was that the outside of it always smelt and the staff I found very rude and unhelpful. There was only one member of staff that worked there which me and my family found welcoming, friendly and helpful but the rest were always rude and was disappointing.
The pool was very clean and we spent most of our time around there.
