Horrible hotel, good location
from Medicaltraveller
The hotel is close to the centre of Edinburgh on a very busy cobbled street; I was kept awake all night by lorries and heavy traffic rattling down the road. The bar is horribly generic, there are so many great places in Edinburgh to spend an evening or eat breakfast that I can't believe anyone would chose to spend time there. The bathroom was shabby, the toilet bowl cracked and the room generally felt completely bare and drab.
Well up to standard

I use Travelodges frequently and am posting a review about this one because my experience there has been more positive than some of the previous reviews listed here. I have come to expect no-nonsense, efficient service from the Travelodge brand. My large room was exceptionally clean, the bathroom was sparkling, the one towel is enormous and there are tea/coffee making facilities in the room. The staff were helpful and smiled alot. What more can you want from a budget priced hotel? There is a bar which serves the usual pub-style food, and breakfast if you choose to eat on site. The location is a few strides from the Royal Mile. Also great for railusers like me, but be warned that the car park is pricey.
Good for what you pay
from indigogirl1976
We stayed here for 2 nights in Oct 2006. The location was excellent!!!! If you are a first time visitor to edinbugh this hotel is slap bang in the middle of the toursit district. The room was quite basic as was the whole hotel. My main problem was the noise. The street noise from traffic is really loud...if you are a light sleeper you may have problems. I would ask for a room located at the back of the hotel...i.e. off the main street...the noise might be less there. All in all not bad for £65pn and its better than a hostel! Just don't expect luxury!
Great Location

we (26&34) stayed at this hotel for 2 nights (saturday 14 oct to monday 16 oct) we found the hotel easy after getting off the air link bus. are we arrived at 8am our room was not ready, so the staff were happy for us to leave our case and start the day in EDI. we did not spend too much time in our room, but it was nice and clean. great bed, and shower. could hear a little traffic, but this did not bother us as we were up and about round about 9am. did not have break fast in the hotel, went out to a local cafe. reception staff were great and were very nice and friendly. we were on the 2nd floor (222) and was did not hear no one walking pass our door, even though we saw a few hen nights staying at our hotel. location was great. lots of bars and cafes, close to the royal mile, castle, etc. (very close to the raddison and the bank hotel) book this travel lodge as you know what you are getting for £60 per night.
Great Stay!

We stayed here for 6 nights and it was fine. Room was clean and comfortable, we had a family room and was spacious for 3 people. Great location for Edinburgh. Would stay at again and breakfast for £6 or so was great.
Dirty hotel in a central location
from TheSpencers
Made a booking to stay in this Hotel over September weekend. Checked out within the hour after looking at 3 rooms. All were dirty, with a terrible smell. Staff were helpful, we got a full refund. Please beware should you stay here, its very basic. Its similar standards of a hostel not a hotel.
Hen / Stag night heaven - Noisy location - bit of a dive
from CathyC
Stayed here for two nights - Friday and Saturday nights - we needed somewhere central - near train station and with parking. The staff on reception were more than polite - poor things having to work there with all the drunks. It was absolutely full of hen parties and stag groups. It is a great location just a few mins from the Royal mile - Great for a hen night. And it was cheap. Unfortunately it was very noisy making it hard to sleep - we were on the 2nd floor facing the road - road is cobbled so even more noise- the window didn't shut properly and wasn't double glazed - so heard the revellers until 4am - the countdown was amusing on the Friday night - the sirens on the emergency vehicles seemed to be going off all the time. The carpet also felt a little dirty. There were only 2 bath towels (had booked a family room) no hand towels. Bought Earplugs - recommend if you want to sleep here buy some!
Never again . . .

My boyfriend and I stayed at the Travelodge Edinburgh Central for two nights (June 28th and 29th, 2006) during a trip to the UK. The location was the only thing this hotel had going for it. If you could even call it a hotel. It turns out that the Travelodge Edinburgh Central is actually more like a hostel (lots of young people hanging out at all hours, no hotel staff anywhere to be seen, BASIC room) - which is fine, if you are looking to stay in a hostel. But we weren't. My main issue with the hotel was the lack of customer service. Our room had a slip of paper on the desk explaining that in an effort to cut back on costs, guests are unable to call down to the front desk. This creates quite the hassle, especially when there is a problem with the room. Our TV only had 3 working channels, and the movie menu wouldn't work (the movies you can order and add to your hotel bill). After having a hotel staff member come up and look at the TV, we called the movie/TV company's customer service number (which was provided to us by the staff member), and they told us we were missing a cable from the TV and to talk to the hotel about it. My boyfriend went back down to ask someone (since we couldn't call the front desk!), and she said she would come up and never did. At that point it was late, and we were on our way out, so we told her to not bother going to our room. She stared at my boyfriend blankly, having obviously forgotten about us. Being able to order movies may not seem like a huge issue, but when you have an early flight the next morning and want to have a quiet night in, 3 crappy channels will drive you mad. And it was the way they handled it - if they had acknowledged us and said "sorry, we can't fix the problem" I would have been happier than having been ignored. What kind of customer service is that? And, the same girl who forgot about us called our room and provided my boyfriend with a message to call someone back. We weren't expecting a call, but the name she gave was of a family friend in Ireland. So my boyfriend called the number (charged it to his credit card) and it turns out he didn't know the woman - she just happened to have the same name as the family friend. But she told him she had left a message for someone else staying at the hotel. When we were on our way out, we told the girl about her screw up and how we had to pay for a long distance phone call because of her. She gave us 30 pence, and said that should cover it. When we got back home, his credit card bill was charged $6.00 for the call! It may not be a lot of money, but it is definitely an unnecessary expense to have. I would recommend looking into the Jury's Inn, or any other hotels in that area. Even if it is a bit more, I would rather pay an extra $50 a night than stay at the Travelodge Edinburgh Central again.
Great location and cheap, but be wary

We stayed for two nights in early July 2006 -- had reserved months before via the internet and, luckily, I had brought the confirmation print out with me. Upon checking in, we were overcharged 20 pounds, and when I displayed the confirmation with the correct price, they grudgingly corrected our bill. We were sent to our room on the top floor, which turned out to be a smoking room -- reeking of stale smoke, as was the entire floor. This meant another trip to registration, only to find out that our reservation in their system had us requesting a smoking room. Again, our printed confirmation came in handy -- it clearly stated "non-smoking." Our non-smoking room was adequate and even spacious with a couch and double bed. However, the television only worked on two channels, and, worst of all, the bath had a broken water diverter, making both tub baths or showers miserable. We complained about the diverter early in our stay, but it was never fixed. Our first night the fire alarm rang about 1 a.m. and the entire hotel evacuated; while this is obviously not the hotel's fault, the lack of staff overseeing the evacuation or updating us on when we could re-enter during a very chilly outside stay left us with a bad feeling. Our room looked out on the street, which seemed to have people shouting and arguing nightly. Even on the third floor, we could hear them clearly with the windows closed. Our advice: book this hotel if you want a very convenient place to sleep near the Royal Mile. Print out all reservation documents and bring them with you to check in. Be aware that you will be staying at a fairly clean, but not responsive hotel on a very noisy street that amplifies any sound, especially drunks in the middle of the night. And prepare yourself for an early morning fire evacuation.

Excellent location and really good value for Money. I got the room three months in advance and was charged £19. The rooms were large and clean with a modern bathroom and flat screen TV. The hotel is very modern and has a meal and bar service available. The location in the... more
