Point Hotel Reviews

Jun 2006, Miss G Cartwright

We arrived at this hotel having been promised a castle view. The view was there but you had to be a contortionist to see it. After complaining, we were upgraded to a luxury room with a double whirlpool bath and a bottle of champagne. The decor is less impressive than... more

Pointless any more
We stayed at The Point a few years ago and it is disappointing to note that it has gone down hill. The public areas are adequate but the bedrooms are badly in need of upgrading. The carpets are worn, our sink was cracked and the "furnishings" (eg drawers and wardrobe) extremely dated and falling apart. The room was large but resembled a student residence rather than a "4 star" (?) hotel. Dinner in the restaurant was OK but the so-called "hot" dishes on room service were cold and quite pricey. The self service breakfast was very basic with little fresh fruit and few choices of juice. Once again the "hot" items had been left too long and were cold as well as tasteless. The lift was not functioning properly and we got stuck for about 10 minutes with our small child which was not pleasant. Apparently it does this frequently, we were told, so perhaps an inspection and repair is needed?! Health and safety? The rooms were good value for money but with absolutely no finesse so we probably will not choose to return. Pity, as its location is also good and we had a good night's sleep after a few wee drams.

Thank you for taking the time to share with me your experience whilst staying at the hotel recently. I am disappointed to read your review regarding your experience within our Food and Beverage outlets and will discuss this with the Food and Beverage Manager and Executive Chef to understand what went wrong and resolve immediately. We have started a soft refurbishment program since taking over in September before the major work commence in 2011 as we believe in offering a good quality service at an affordable price. I am concerned with your comments concerning the lifts at the hotel as they are covered and maintained as is all our equipment at the hotel through service agreements and adhere to all Health & safety policies as our guests and staff personal health is of the upmost importance. The lift like all other equipment does break down from time to time however this is common in all businesses and is reduced with good practices and maintenance which we have in place. I am sorry that you left the hotel with a less than favorable opinion of us however I can assure you that I personally read and action all our guest comments to ensure we learn from our mistakes and make the necessary changes. Thank you Ronald Little General Manager

Gone downhill
Despite all the recent awards for Best Hotel down the years in Edinburgh, I think this place is not as good as it used to be. The reception and bar area look the part, but once you step upstairs to therooms it's a different story. I had booked through the corporate supplier so had certain expectations. Firstly on arrival I was told breakfast was included in the rate, then found out the next morning I had been charged £13. The room was a single and also the door rattled through the night. I have already contacted the hotel direct and they have promised me an upgrade if I say again and that is appreciated, however I much prefer the Premier Inn on Haymarket.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience after your recent stay with us. I am disappointed to read of your experience and appreciate that the hotel is indeed not as it was when it won plaudits and awards for its design. We are in the midst of completing a soft refurbishment ahead of the major works in 2011 due to our recent acquisition of the property. We believe in delivering exception service within excellent facilities and I appreciate your patience and custom whilst we work towards this. Thank you Ronald Little General Manager

I appreciate your feedback on your recent stay at the hotel. I am happy to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and although would have preferred that you used our restaurant and/or bar, I am glad you enjoyed the atmosphere in the local bar. Thank you Ronald Little General Manager

Weekend stay
For the price paid it was a value for money weekend away. Great service from the staff. Food excellent and location was ok. I took ill one night I was there and the hotel staff couldn't do enough for me. The rooms were spacious and had everything you needed plus the comfiest bed I ever slept in at a hotel. The only thing is because it's a venue for evening drinkers children had to be out of the bar for 8pm.. Bit early for a hotel bar. That was the only draw back. All in all a good weekend and if you take in the sites that Edinburgh has to offer you're too tired to stay up until then anyway.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with me after your stay at the hotel. I am glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and had a great time in Edinburgh seeing all that it has to offer. I am sorry that the strict licensing laws in Scotland stop us from allowing children into our Bar after 8pm. We allow families to relax in our restaurant or reception area due to this to ensure they can enjoy a drink comfortably. I appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you back to the Point Hotel Edinburgh soon. Kind regards Ronald Little General Manager

Perfect Location, great hotel!
The best thing about the hotel is it's location, it's in the perfect place to walk to the main shopping area (Princes Street), The Grassmarket and all the tourist attractions. We had an amazing view of the castle from our room which I would say it is definatley worth a visit. The hotel Bar is lovely serving fab cocktails and the general decor of the hotel is really nice. The room was big with a nice ensuite with bath and very powerful shower! We went for a meal at Tigerlily, George Street which was amazing. Edinburgh is a lovely city and if I went again I would definatley stay at The Point again.

I am glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us at the hotel and your time in Edinburgh. I appreciate you taking the time to share your comments with us and hope to see you again on your next visit. Kind regards Ronald Little General Manager

I would stay here again.
We booked in for a night at the weekend as we were having a reunion with some old friends. It's really good to see that there is feedback coming from the general manager, and to be honest his feedback very much picks up on the 'little niggles' I had about the place. The lobby is impressive and spotless. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful, and we also made use of the left luggage service after we checked out which just made our day a whole lot more enjoyable. We did notice that there is 'soft refurbishment' going on, and that is a good thing as it is required. I laughed at a previous comment about it looking like there were bodies in the bed - because we thought that too! That said, the beds are comfortable, the pillows are excellent and I had a great night's sleep. Dubious stain on the curtains (not sure how it got there!) but they were dark and lined and made for a good sleep. Restrictors on the showers would be a welcome addition, half our party did not use them as we were a bit scared after hearing the other half of our party's experiences with them! Even on the upper floors the pressure was immense. The tiles around the shower area in our room could do with a steam clean - they were a bit grotty and stained due to the minerals in Edinburgh water. The tap also leaked into the bath and has stained it yellow. We didn't realise breakfast was not included as we must have read the thing wrong online. £27.90 for two breakfasts - which were fine but nothing to write home about - is a *bit* extortionate! Especially as one person had tea and toast, unaware of the charge levied on check out. We were also supposed to get some free wine as we booked online and we didn't get it. In fairness, we do think breakfast included would be nicer than free wine. We had a few drinks in the hotel bar, which was clean with good service. Knowing Edinburgh well, we didn't stay there long and headed out and about. I definitely wouldn't say no to a return visit to this place. It is well-placed to get around the city easily, is close to major bus routes and tourist attractions and the staff were just great. I would be interested to return after the refurbishment programme is complete.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience whilst staying with us at the Point Hotel. I note that although in general you enjoyed your stay with us, you highlighted, Breakfast, the Showers and Bedding as areas where we need to improve. In the past 7 weeks we have been working to make improvements throughout the hotel after taking over the property and have made some progress to resolve these. We have received new duvets to replace the bumpy (dead bodies effect) one we had in place and these will be installed shortly, breakfast improvements have started and we have streamlined the offering to focus on quality and will continue to work on adding to our offering to enhance the breakfast. I am sorry to read that your colleague only had tea and toast and was charged the full price. This clearly should have been highlighted at check in to ensure you knew of the charges for breakfast to allow you to make the decision before hand. The hotel is going through a soft refurbishment at present to refresh the property and has a great team in place this is being carried our without any inconvenience to our guests. I am sorry to hear that we did not deliver on your package and will discuss this with the team to understand what went wrong to ensure it is an isolated incident. Thank you Ronald Little General Manager

Brilliant stay. Friendly staff and beautiful views.
Just got back from this brilliant hotel. Went for a 2 night stay a bit sceptic as previous reviews were not very postive. All doubts were completely shattered on entering this hotel. We arrived too early for check-in but the lady on the desk double-checked to see if she had a room for us. Unfortunatley there wasn't a room available untill 2pm so they took our case and stored this for us no problem. The location is great. A 10 minute walk from Prince's Street and a 5 minute walk from the beautiful Old Town. Only bad point is the amount of strip clubs nearby but they caused no problems whatsoever. On return for check-in the lady on the desk was so friendly. It was my partners 21st birthday (which I had popped on the special request section when booking) and she had took notice of this and was lovely to ask. I had requested a nice view and was astounded by the room we got. It was fabulous. We were given a room on the top floor even though we only paid for a standard room which was right next to the pent-house. Quite convinced this was an executive room to be honest. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean an quiet. Exactly the remedy we needed after a long day of walking around this gorgeous city. We loved this hotel so much we are looking to book up for February for a longer stay. Don't believe the bad reviews you read about staff being impolite or noise disturbing sleep. It's rubbish. Couldn't be happier and can't wait to go back. Definate value for money.

Thank you for taking the time to share your comments after your recent stay with us. I am glad to read that you enjoyed your stay at the hotel and also appreciated the fantastic views we have to offer from our front facing guest rooms. We have a selection of front facing rooms which are both standard and executive so it may have been that you were given an upgrade by the Reception Team which had the effect that they were hoping, leaving the lasting impression of a fantastic stay in Edinburgh overlooking the Castle. I appreciate you taking the time and look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel on your next visit to Edinburgh. Thank you Ronald Little General Manager

Huge suite, great value for money
I returned home to Edinburgh recently and wanted a view of the castle as primary requirement. Paid £230 for 2 nights in a suite which was the size of an average 2 bedroom flat! Jacuzzi is huge! The rooms are a wee bit past their best with a refurbishment probably not too far away but for the same money I could have had a room about a quarter of the size in a recently refubished 4 star place for the same price. Overall, the staff were great and I thought the stay was fantastic value for money!

Thank you for your feedback on your stay with us at the Point Hotel Edinburgh. I am glad to read that you enjoyed your stay with us and the fantastic view from one of our Jacuzzi Suite. We have recently taken over the hotel and have started a soft refurbishment plan to enhance the bedrooms and the overall product as the rooms are all spacious and most have spectacular views onto Edinburgh Castle. I appreciate your time and feedback and look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel on your next visit to Edinburgh. Kind regards Ronald Little General Manager

Point...less
Lobby to hotel is clean, modern and spacious with an efficient check in. There ends the majority of the good points. Corridor to the rooms on first floor where we were staying are tall but walls are painted grey with aubergine doors giving depressing, dgloomy appearance and there was n unpleasant smell to go along with it. Outside one of the rooms there was a vertical illuminated pole with stripes- made it look cheap and tacky and didn't seem to serve any purpose. Entering my room there were two single beds pushed together (not unusual) but they had two single quilts and seperate underneath sheets. The duvets had not been straightened within their covers and it looked like 2 bodies in the bed. Having said that the white sheets were pristeen. Beside the bedhead, on the carpet, there were stains which looked like vomit and had bleached the carpet.......not nice. A big long settee would have been a great assett if one of the legs had not been left lying next to it on the floor rendering it a seesaw. There are no curtains but a blacked out sliding glass panel which does however serve its purpose. There was tea and coffee with one biscuit which was not replaced. The shower over the small bath was so powerful that it hurt sensitive parts of the anatomy and the shower curtain sucked onto your bopdy (unpleasant) but if pushed aside it resulted in flooding the floor. Cleanliness was ok on the surface but the bathroom sink was not cleaned during my stay and the skirtuing boards were filthy. I had 2 problems during my stay which were dealt with quickly and efficiently on reporting: 1) No toilet roll- inexcusable at this price 2) My electricity supply went off during the first night- could happen anywhere Breakfast was satisfactory, nothing to write home about but an adequate start to the day. Situation wise the hotel is in a redlight area with sex shops and lap dancing clubs but it did not appear unsafe or unsavoury and it made central Edinburgh accessible. In short I would not choose to stay here again or recommend anyone to stay. Its rate was the same as the Novotel and Ramada with their high standards to offer a comparison.

Thank you for your feedback on your stay with us at the Point Hotel Edinburgh. I am disappointed to read of your experience at the hotel as we failed on many levels and let ourselves down unnecessarily. We have just taken over the hotel in September and have started a soft refurbishment program to enhance the bedrooms and corridors and have better systems and procedures in place to resolve issues before guests' arrival to reduce inconvenience. We will make the changes necessary and apologise that it was not in time for your visit and hope that you will allow us another opportunity to serve you again on your next visit to Edinburgh. Thank you Kind regards Ronald Little General Manager

In general we were very satisfied with our stay.
We would however propose an installation of a new shower taps. The present ones were almost impossible to operate. Not possible to regulate the flow (only full) and also a good mix of cold and warm very difficult to achieve. The parties stayed in room 316 &3178.
Management response from GM_Point_Hotel 25 Oct 2010

Thank you for your feedback on your stay with us at the Point Hotel Edinburgh. I note that although in general you enjoyed your stay, you highlighted cleanliness and water pressure as areas we need to improve. We have recently taken over the hotel and are currently changing the way the team work to ensure we focus on quality at the hotel and improve on the processes of cleaning and checking of our guest rooms. This will allow the team to focus on working more efficiently and enhance any niggles we have at present. The water pressure is very powerful as you indicated in some rooms and although it is the ultimate power shower, we will be placing restrictors on these to reduce this in the long term as we replace the bathrooms. I appreciate your time and look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel on your next visit to Edinburgh. Kind regards Ronald Little General Manager
