Festival Magic!
Had a wonderful stay at Channings last weekend, it was our anniversary and the staff could not have been more helpful. Our room had views over to Fife and was of a very high standard. We were able to take in some shows at the festival (the hotel were kind enough to book and recommend some shows). It has been a while since we have stayed at Channings and the Bar and Restaurant has totally changed, with a new restaurant called Ochre Vita which we dined in one evening (excellent Tapas). We will be back and recommend it for a weekend in the... more
Did not live up to expectations
We stayed in this hotel for my birthday last year and although got a good rate on the Internet, it would still be classed as an expensive stay. I have to agree with the comments listed that the hotel lobby (and indeed website) deceive you into believing this is a high quality boutique hotel. Our room was tiny and a bit on the scruffy side. The bathroom was just a corner of the room which had been blocked off and hardly enough room to turn around in. On returning to the hotel after a day out the window had been left open and the room was... more
Needs proper cleaning and maintenance
Seems much worse than a few years ago. Bedroom rather dusty, window dirty, chair had large depression where cushion should be. Satellite TV erratic and I could not get internet connection to switch on. Blood spot on duvet. Bathroom had loose towel rail & shaky fitted hairdrier, poor quality towels smelling of ?bleach, and an odd unpleasant smell in the bathroom generally. Restaurant very good and good value. Butter seemed ransid, but hard to avoid this in warm weather I suppose. A number of dogs was noted in the bar where a... more
Would not recommend
I was extremely disappointed with the accomodations and service at the Channings Hotel. Although the room was nicely decorated and somewhat spacious, it was noisy and uncomfortable. The queen bed was actually two twins that were joined together. The television was approximately 16" and not visible from bed. The room was extremely expensive, yet they charged four dollars for the daily paper and the refilled bottled water in the room. Glasses were not washed or replaced. Upon our arrival, we were offered coffee, but later charged 15 dollars.... more
Foosty Rooms!!!
This Hotel is relatively expensive and for the same money in Edinburgh you can get much better. We stayed in a top floor room which had a 'foosty' smell and the bathroom needed a bit of attention. The televsion didn't work properly. The reception area is highly decpetive as it looks fancy and contemporary but when you get to the bedroom its is tired and slightly smelly. The reception staff were quite condescending when we asked if we could have a free upgrade and told us that the hotel was full (despite the fact that we were the only people... more
Disappointing
Although the hotel itself was adequate, I felt it fell terribly short in the service category. Too few staff and those that were there were ill trained . They were nice enough but all foreign. This meant that you never spoke to anyone with any local knowldege and they didn't seem to care about getting you the information you needed. One worker spent all the time that I saw him repeatedly polishing the plaque outside the hotel and shuffling and re-shuffling the hotel brochures. It just lacked professionalism. The 6am wake-up calls that I... more
Nice hotel, shame about the lift
We booked to stay here for my birthday and, after reading some of the reviews, was a bit worried about what lay in store for us. However, it was not as bad as anticipated. Our room was on the top floor so we certainly became very fit over our weekend stay as the lift was a bit dodgy. We had a horrible view over the back of some residential garages and the decor in our room was a bit tired but I think they are refurbishing some of the rooms. The main lobby of the hotel is beautifully decorated and is very welcoming with an open fire.... more
Always good but avoid 3rd floor rooms
Stay here regularly on business, great rooms, very comfy beds, nice bathrooms, cable TV, very quiet, nice dining room - only thing is to avoid the 3rd floor rooms which are smaller and not so nicely decorated.
Fantastic retreat
What a great hotel. We were in room 14 which is actually one of the ones downstairs. My girlfriend was a bit worried about this at first fearing some poky, dark room in the back of the hotel but quite the opposite. Really nice suite - probably the most comfy bed in the world and really classy decor abound. Pretty ---- sexy too! Moments from the centre of the city, brilliant uber friendly staff, great bar - what more could you possibly ask for? AND - not an arm and a leg to stay. Laugh at the misguided fools trapsing to the multiple... more
room ok but food amazing
Stayed here as part of our honeymoon in mid Feb. Had booked a superior room with jacuzzi bath and paid full rate as had booked well in advance. While the room was good there were minor niggles like tv not working (quickly rectified by staff) and 2 single duvets instead of a double (fixed the next day). Basically it was all pretty standard and nothing spectacular. The location wasn't brilliant but a helpful taxi driver pointed out that the hotel was only a few minutes walk from Stockbridge which was full of shops, pubs and restaraunts,... more
