Herald House Hotel Reviews

Jul 2007, Mrs H Brown

My son and I stayed here for 2 nights when we went upto Edinburgh for a concert at the castle. It’s a well looked after, clean hotel. The staff were lovely, very helpful, and friendly. We had a room on the 3rd floor, reached by the lift. It was clean and well presented.... more

Very decent!
Approximately fifteen minute walk from the Royal Mile, and ten minutes to Haymarket station and bus to airport. Close to supermarkets and cafes. Excellent breakfast. Everywhere needed a good dust.
We'd Go Back...
We stayed for 4 nights this month at Herald House, and were very satisfied with the service. If you've read the previous reviews, here's an update: they've finished painting, and the brewery is being replaced by a commercial/residential development. Our first room had an old mattress, so we asked to change and were helped immediately by their friendly staff. Everything else was fine, the rooms were good, breakfast generous, and staff were lovely. It's a two star hotel, remember, so yes the bathroom is small and yes some bits of the hotel are a bit worn. But it is only 10-15 minutes walk to the Castle, 5 minutes walk to Haymarket station. There are some good restaurants round the corner in Morrison St too. If you want a quiet room, ask to be put on the third floor. I've paid more for much worse accommodation, and would happily stay here again.
We loved Herald House
Staying at the Hotel during our break in Edinburgh we found the other reviews to be unfounded, the hotel is conveniant for the city centre, the room was comfortable, the staff were great and the breakfast was wonderful. Next time we are in Edinburgh we will be staying at the Herald House.
Dreadful Place
Very poor customer service. We were told we could check out up to 11.45 when we arrived at reception at 11.47 an additional day was charged to the room which we were intimidated into paying. I will never stay here again.
Perfect for a weekend break
I really valued the reviews I read about this hotel so thought that I'd write my own! This hotel was lovely, perfect for our weekend break to Edinburgh! Bit more of a walk to the centre than I had expected - I think it took 20 minutes to walk in but really nice walk and away from the noise of the city centre. Quite basic inside but clean and had everything you wanted with really friendly staff! If you want a site-seeing stay in Edinburgh, this place is perfect!
Excellent Value for Money
Recently stayed at the Herald House Hotel with 15 friends for a hen party. We were a little worried about some of the previous reports but were really pleased when we arrived. The rooms were great, clean, good size and comfortable. The cafe bar made quick snacks which was good. The staff were friendly and breakfast excellent even though we turned up just before it closed on both days. It was about a 15 minute walk into the main part of the city but this was no problem as the walk was welcome or we just jumped in a taxi. We had an absolutley brilliant time, Edinburgh is a great city. Had a very good meal in La Tasca on the Friday and found some excellent pubs. The Three Sisters was brilliant on Saturday especially as the weather was hot and the England v Paraguay football match was screened outdoors. If you want a great weekend then go to Edinburgh. If you want a cheap, good hotel (we paid £30 per night each B&B) then stay in the Herald House Hotel.
great 2 day short break
room very adequate, staff excellent, breakfast second to none.would hope to be back soon.
Worst in the world
I had the utter misfortune to be staying at the Herald House this weekend past. My room was on the second floor and overlooked the road outside, for the total stay I never got a wink of sleep as I could here the couple next door enjoying each others company and the local hobo outside being very ill, not to mention the countless streams of taxis which pulled up between midnight and five in the morning. Rooms are tiny, dirty, outdated and thrashed. Corridor had been stripped of paint so it could be painted, the dust had gone into the room and whenever you bruched against the wall you were covered in a white dust. Breakfast finished at 9.30am, I went down at 9.15am, the buffet had been destroyed and when I asked for it to be replensihed was told that breakfast was over, I reminded the girl that the room infor said breakfast was on until 9.30am to which she shrugged her shoulders and walked away. NOT a nice expereince and CERTAINLY one I will NEVER repeat. AWFUL place.
Could rest my head oin the wall whilst on the loo!!
Had a 4 day break in the Herald Hotel, location very convenient for the main part of the town. Parking an ache as no where at all to park at hotel so had to use public car park overnight. Staff were friendly and breakfast was good. We had a double room anotel had a nice cosy bar it would benefit, instead it has an internet type cafe bar that was always empty, too modern and sterile with plastic chairs. Cheap hotel with a good breakfast but would not stay here again...ever... d it was pretty cramped to be honest. the bathroom was a bit of a shock; contained a shower cubicle, loo and sink but was so small that when sitting on the throne knees were almost touching the wall!! The other problem was the noise from the other rooms, a definite lack of privacy!! and whether you liked it or not the noise of slamming doors woke us around 7am each morning. If the h
Good value for Two-Stars
My Wife and some friends stayed here between Christmas and New Year's and for a 2-star hotel this place is pretty good really. Yes, the bathrooms are very very small. Yes, the hotel is next to a Brewery. Yes, compared to a three-star hotel the rooms are a little shabby but you get what you pay for and... The Hotel is barely five minutes walk from the cool Grassmarket area. (There's also a bus stop close by and an ATM on the corner). The complimentary full scottish breakfast is one of the best cooked buffet breakfasts we've seen. (Or else try the super-cheap friendly Jaspers cafe on the same street). The staff were also very friendly (The night porter who had three different jobs had no problem opening up the bar for us when we arrived in late at night). This place ain't the Hilton but we'd definitely recommend it to budget-conscious travellers.
