Fawlty Towers is alive and well!!
Have stayed at this hotel on two occasions both for over four days each time recently. Both times, rooms are good, and food was ok. (although please be aware there are two types of rooms, renovated and not...) The front facing rooms have a lovely view, and although much noise at night, it is in keeping with any city centre location. However, be aware also, that there is a great deal of renovation going on at the rear of the hotel, (which the staff do not disclose when booking), and the work goes on till 2 or 3am, utilising loud... more
better than i had braced myself for!
I had read the reviews beforehand and was expecting somewhat shoddy rooms, torn sheets etc but was happy at the rooms we had, although they were back rooms and yes the view was non existant they were clean and tidy (maybe the twin was small?). The finish could have been a tiny bit better such as wallpaper nicks here and there but it didn't prevent cleanliness or anything. We found the service at the restaurant to be really good, you were constantly looked after. The view at any meal time couldn't really be any better as the location of... more
lock outs and location
Hotel is brilliantly appointed, with rooms(furnished to a very high standard for price) and the dining are having fantastic views over the gardens and castle, which is all rather good indeed. The negatives however. The ridiculous key card system failed on 8 different occaisons over a 2 night stay, occaisionally one of either my or my partner's card would work. The worst event was on our arrival when the cards would not work first time. I went to reception whilst my partner waited outside our room with the cases. They... more
Great Room and Location
Great hotel, great location but prices can really vary! Not having used priceline website before for booking, I phoned the hotel a few weeks before our check-in date to confirm that we had 2 double rooms booked. They had us down as twin rooms so this was adjusted and confirmed. When checking in the staff has us in 2 single rooms! They spent 20mins at the computer typing before confirming we had our rooms. This could have been dealt with better, even an apology saying sorry for the delay would have been ok! But when we walked into our... more
Locatio, location!
Nice hotel - AMAZING lovely location (I don't think I've ever had such a beautiful view over breakfast) - dining room overlooks the castle, but most importantly - it's in the heart of the shops, opposite Waverley train station and 5 mins walk from the old town too! The rooms themselves are in need of an upgrade (at least the ones that don't face the castle) - if you are staying longer than overnight, it may be worth the £30 upgrade fee - not just for the view, but also for the new furniture and the lack of peeling paint on the pipes... more
Great Hotel,Fab location
My family and I have just returned from a fabulous stay in Edinburgh. This hotel was more than we expected, rooms were spotlessly clean, food was great, but it was the staff who had the biggest impact on our stay. They were all so friendly and helpful. I felt we got great value for money and that the hotel is definately at the top of the 3* range.Get a castle facing room, its30 pounds extra per night but its worth it!!! Enjoy
Dont believe all you read
Stayed at this hotel 25-27 Jan 07, having booked it through www.gtahotels.com chose it because of the location in the city centre and the price £75 per night B&B. Was dreading it because of the reviews. On arrival was greeted by very friendly staff and told Damien my friend and I were visiting our daughters and wanted a nice room. We were allocated a re-furbished room "New York" style with the castle view. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable with a large clean bathroom with power shower. We had absolutely no complaints about the... more

Accomodating Accomodations
After being thoroughly disgusted with the accomodations I booked at the Old Waverley Hotel, I walked a half block up Princes Street to find the Ramada Mount Royal. The receptionist was able to offer us a room for a reasonable price (with no prior reservation). The room was bright and cheerful with a good view of the Castle. The entire staff was very pleasant and breakfast was always a joy with their attentive service. Don't bother with a disruption in your plans from the Old Waverley, but plan your next trip to Edinburgh at the... more
Ripp Off
Booked on the internet through a certain commercial hotel website. Paid in full for 2 nights bed and breakfast, (£198), on arrival at reception , was mistakenly told we had only paid deposit.WRONG,Checked with credit card company indeed i had paid. Next ripp off came on morning of depature when the restuaraunt manager demanded payment for breakfast (£47.80) APPARENTLY i had only paid for room only-Not according to the offer on the afore mentioned web site. SO BEWARE. The hotel itself was centrally located and good for... more
