A Lovely "Time Out"
We have just returned home after a three night stay at the Frederick house Hotel in Edinburgh. Having read the good and the bad reviews of this hotel we were not entirely sure what to expect - but we had a lovely time here. I guess its one of those hotels that either suits you or not depending on what you want from a Hotel. We wanted peace and quiet - time out from a busy working life and we got exactly that. The hotel itself is perfectly situated - a minutes walk from Princes Street. The rooms are basic, but are very clean and... more
Pleasant stay
Stayed for a night whilst travelling around the UK. Quiet conveniently located in the heart of town. Walking distance to the station (10-15 mts.). Well maintained hotel, neat and clean. Single rooms are quiet small, found the bathroom to be bigger than the actual room. Nothing to complain about though, the staff were quiet friendly and were helpful with the "what-to-do around here" tips. The best way to see Edinburgh is by getting on one of those hop-on-hop-off buses, good value for money. I'd sincerely recommend going on one of... more
Cheap & Cheerful
Stayed here for 1 night on the 4th November with a group of girls. Great location! The hotel could certainly do with a makeover however it is clean {with the exception of the net curtains}. Rooms are a great size. 1 room {101} could actually fit 5 adults {1 double, 1 single and 2 camp beds!} .. Check out is early {11am} and they dont arrange late checkout so we ended up having to pay for an extra night as our flight wasn't until 10pm. They charged us £80 it was well worth it!! The staff are friendly and the breakfast was in a hotel across... more
Fantastic location
I along with 5 other people enjoyed a stay last Saturday (21 October) at the Frederick House Hotel. We were through from Glasgow for a musical at the Playhouse. Rooms Excellent size - we had 2 triple rooms. Clean and comfortable enough, basic but no complaints. Breakfast was supposed to be serves at the restaurant/bar across the road, however we were then advised the next morning that it around the corner at a place called Tigerlillys - excellent Staff Very polite, helpful & friendly. Location Absolutely... more
Good Hotel & Location
A three star hotel and that is what you get. Rooms are a decent size - we had two to accommodate us (one for parents/ one for kids) and these were adjacent which was helpful. No interconnecting doors though - again this is what you'd expect in a proprty of this age. Our rooms were at the back of the hotel so the views were simply the back of the surrounding buildings but this was no problem as we didn't expect to be spending much time in the hotel anyway. Having a fridge in the room was a bonus as it meant we could obviously store a few... more
A Modest hotel Close to Everything
The view was best when entering the hotel front door (see picture)! But the location was great, and within minutes by foot of the railway station, Princes Street, the Scott Memorial, the Castle and the Royal Mile. A modest building, adequate. Breakfast was at a cafe across the road, which was OK except it was a little rainy, but that wasn't the hotel's fault. There is an elevator, but there are also steps to negotiate into the hotel itself. Recommended as a good headquarters for exploring this wonderful city.
Needs freshening.
We needed TWO beds so we were given a room in the front that was enormous. However, the place really needs a redo. It's not just shabby. The state of the upholstery on our headboards led us to put towels over them before leaning back. The rug was very spotted. The one (and only) chair was in shreds. The location is fantastic, certainly, but we did not like having the breakfast across the street. It made coming back to brush teeth quite inconvenient. Breakfast was OK but not great. Checkout is early at 10 AM, although there is a... more
Pleasantly surprised
Had read mixed reviews on Trip Advisor so approached a stay at this hotel last week with a fair bit of apprehension, but was quite impressed. The staff were really welcoming, and, despite a very early arrival off the plane, storage of luggage was no problem. The room was quiet and everything worked. Previous reviews talked of a shabby hotel, but though it has rather old fashioned decor, my wife and I found it clean and comfortable. Breakfast is taken across the street (using vouchers provided by the hotel) in a 'designer bistro' where again... more
Very disppointing and uncomfortable
When I had to request cleaning products and a sponge to remove the yellow rim of dirt in the bathtub, I knew things were going to go downhill from there. £80 per night for a tiny, narrow and dark room with the strict minimum: tiny TV, tiny desk, nearly non existant window. The room had a very old (some might say very "traditional") decor, with golden door handles and tacky English mis-matched patterns everywhere. Walls and furniture all showed signs of old age and uncleanliness. The head rest had clearly never been changed, the curtains... more
A Bit Disappointed
I just got back from staying at the Frederick Hotel on a business trip last week. This was my first stay as my regular hotel was booked. I found this hotel on the internet, read some reviews, only to be disappointed when I got there. This is definitely not a hotel for business trips. The hotel is of course very old, which adds to the character. The people very nice, but the bedrooms just don't have that comfort level you are looking for after a hard day at work. They are very basic; six inch televisions, dark, no drinking water and old... more
