Not too bad
After reading some of the reviews on here I wasn't expecting much at all, but I was pleasently surprised. My room was clean and comfortable, with a decent sized bathroom, and a good shower. Breakfast was plentiful, and the staff seemed very helpful, though I didn't have much contact with them outside checking in and out. From talking to other guests however, it does seem that room size is a bit of a lottery, and some were particularly small. The hotel is definitely a little shabby round the edges, though they are in the middle of a... more
very poor
this hotel is in a great location but that is about it.rooms are tatty, service is poor, and the place is in much need of a complete refurb.they are going to start a £12 million pound refit and once this is complete the hotel will be worth looking at again,as it does have great potential. In the meantime there are much better hotels in edinburgh to stay at.
go only for location
The location of this hotel is excellent and the buffet breakfast was truly great, apart from that I have only negative comments about this hotel. It is incredibly dated , the receptionist did her best to get us a good room ,she showed us 3, all of which were appalling. The reception , bar and dining area have all been refurbished, half the hotel rooms are shut as they are in the middle of a refurb. The room we occupied was incredibly small, dirty and dated. Travelodge rooms are much superior ! We were very dissappointed and... more
Great location and wonderful food
Stayed here during a two week tour of Scotland and loved it. The lobby was beautiful and a favorite haunt for the members of our tour. The room was fine although a bit stuffy when the temps got up into th 70's. The food was the best of our whole tour. The buffet offered lots of variety from our usual porridge. The location was great too. Just a few minutes walk to Princes Street and all the great shops.
Probably about to go upmarket!
Stayed here early in 2005, and had to change rooms as the heating wouldn't switch off in the first room. The carpets were threadbear, and the whole place was in need of a serious refurb. Good news on the horizon, the hotel has been bought from Intercontinental by the same group who recently refurbished the Royal York and the Manchester Palace - hopefully they will do the same job of restoring hotels to their former glory and in six months time it will be a decent hotel once again.
Rip off
We stayed here last weekend for what was supposed to be a birthday treat. The room was a disgrace, I had read that the hotel was being refurbished but did not expect to receive a sub-standard room. The carpet was threadbare in places, the bed had no headboard and was sloping down at one end. The room was freezing as the window was coming away from it's surround. I will never stay here again and recommend it to no-one. Choose somewhere else which will be better value for money. At £99 a night it was a rip off.
Shame the concierge spoiled an enjoyable visit to Edinburgh
Stayed at the George last weekened (Dec 10th/11th 05). Breakfast was good as always, public rooms lovely and we paid £30 for an upgraded room (well worth it - we were pleased with the room overall). However, what really spoilt it for us was the attitude of one of the concierges who was on duty when we arrived during the morning. Our room wasn't ready on check in (no problem as our flight was early) and, as usual, we asked the concierge if we could have our case stored so that we could go and do some shopping. He wanted to know what time we... more
Love it or loathe it!!
I think these reviews are all quite fair really. We use it for business a lot and our opinions are as divided as the ones you see here. It just shows that one size doesn't fit all! I love the George; I'd give it 4 stars for myself but I do recognise its downsides so wouldn't raise false expectations. I know there are smarter hotels nearby (eg The Carlton) but The George has got real character. Unbeatable location - just off Princes Street and not much traffic noise. Some of the rooms are indeed a bit shabby but the public areas are lovely. I... more
Not that bad....
Having stayed at the George for the fifth or sixth time ealier this month, I must report that the George is still pretty much like it always was. I enjoy my stays there, found the staff helpful, and would stay there again. I understand the cheapest rooms are pretty grim, but we enjoyed the room we had which was a premium room and, as always, the location cannot be beaten. But renovations start in January, 2006, and perhaps the buyer shold beware unti, they are complete. In terms of hotels in Edinburgh, I'd still stay at the... more
Great location way OTT concierge
Well great location and nice public areas our room had a great view, BUT the hotel was let down by the money grabbing head concierge - before our bags could touch the floor they were whisked away later to be brought to the room (which wasnt ready for published check in time) here a tip was almost demanded this would be expected however the same concierge had previously taken our car for valet parking at a charge of £9.50 he made such a hullaballoo about the difficulties he was having getting a space a tip had to be in order, you think this... more
