Absolutely First Class

We originally booked The Balmoral through Alpharooms but as they were overbooked we were offered The Caledonian instead with a guaranteed Castle View room. After looking at Tripadvisor and seeing some of the negative comments we very nearly turned it down, but as the flights were booked and it was very short notice we went for it. How right we were, the level of service we were given from begining to end was absolutely outstanding. The room although fairly small was perfectly formed immaculately clean, with all mod cons and did indeed have a super view of the Castle. All of the staff were first class and Frits in the main restaurant stands out for special praise for going well above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that two weary tourists late back for lunch were treated like royalty. If other visitors have the same treatment we did they will have an outstanding stay at this hotel. Highly Reccomended
Lacking the personal touches

Tidy, clean room with large bathroom – excellent shower. We found the cleaner the most helpful staff member. Food: We booked a meal at the reception desk on arrival only to be turned away at the Chisholm Restaurant when we turned up for dinner – they claimed they didn’t have us listed. We thought we’d confused the booking. So we tried the Pompadour - we weren’t listed there either, but they took us in. (Before this they called down to the Chisholms - as it turns out we were on their books!). The Pompadour Wonderful, pampered by waiter and enjoyed absolutely wonderful food! Might not stay at the hotel again but would venture into the Pompadour again! Sadly, it’s pricey – but you certainly get your money’s worth! Chisholms Restaurant Another night we did dine at the cheaper option, but the staff were marginal at best! The food was fine.
Shocking

This Hotel should not carry the Hilton brand, having stayed at many only to be greatly dissapointed by lack of service, most dissapointing breakfast, nasty room. On arrival at 9pm with heavy baggage nobody offered assistance, I mean really is that 5 star service. We stayed in one of the older rooms first night, a two star hotel would be the rating for that one, stained carpets, hot, no cupboard space, creepy. After complaining we were given a newly renovated room, nice, small but still not 5 star in my opinion. The buffet breakfast was really awfull and looked a mess. The eggs were left to fry in a pan of oil 1 inch deep, I have never seen anything so disgusting. The only plus to this hotel is the position. At 228 pounds + Tax for the old creepy room its not worth it
Elegant but Overpriced

Beautiful old building with wonderful grand staircase and friendly staff. Despite a major recent renovation, we were unable to turn off radiator in middle of heat wave and the room had plumbing problems. Convenient to Princes Street shupping but reaturants are a walk. In view of the cost of this hotel cannot recommend as good value for money. No executive lounge for Hilton Honors members. No in-room Internet service or even a telephone jack.
stolen digital camera

The hotel was fine with the exception of no airconditioning. How ever on July 17 about 3:pm I went in to the bar to have a drink in doing so I removed my camera from my wrist put on the bar. I also placed two packages on the stool next to me. There was one other couple at the bar we struck up a conversion they left before I did. After one drink I went to my room. After a few minutes I decided to charge the camera battery. NO CAMERA. Went immedately to the bar. Barman denied seeing a camera. Night personal very concerned. Met with the security manager next day at noon. Reviewed security tapes. Everything I had reported was documented. Then he could not or did not show what happened after I had left there were no images of anyone walking thtrough the area or setting at the bar. The only person that could have taken the camera was the barman. He would have had to see the camera when he removed the dirty glass. removing the glass was not shown to me. There was no offer of compenstation when I checked out of the hotel. All security had to say was "goodby Joy".
Still no AC

We stayed at this Hotel July 7,8 and 9. Our room did not have any air conditioning . After numerous complaints to the front desk, concierge and the engineering department I wrote a letter to the General manager. I was contacted by his underling who proceeded to offer us a room with air for the final night. Several other members of our party experienced the same discomfort. It seemed that hotel employees were not empowered to act on a complaint without contacting their superiors.
No AC. No Luxury

We stayed at the Hilton Caledonian Hotel in Edinburgh for 5 nights in June 2005. These were warm days, and the hotel had no air conditioning. It also had construction scaffolding outside many of the rooms and considerable noise by the workers. The first room that we were given had scaffolding all around it, so that its one tiny window could only be opened a tiny bit. We would have died in that room. When we asked for another, we were given another stifling hot room with tiny windows, but at least there was no scaffolding. It was, however, next to a vent from the restaurant, so we smelled food all the time. This is supposed to be a luxury hotel, but we didn't get that impression. It has a very good location on Princes Street close to the major sights, but the rooms are definitely not ideal in the summer. They say they are installing air conditioning next year, though. They need it. The other annoying thing was that they never even appologized for any of these problems. In fact, we paid extra for a castle view room, and that was the room with the tiny window, through which one could only see the scaffolding and a postage stamp view of the castle. I guess it goes without saying that we were not very happy with this hotel. The only good thing I can say about it is the location.
very dissappointed

My wife and I stayed at the Caledonian for our wedding anniversary over the Bank Holiday weekend. We were very dissappointed, we had booked a delux room-it certainly wasn`t,the mini-bar was missing ,there was no trouser press, the tv signal was very poor, half the channels did not operate, and the windows were blocked by scaffolding. The builders had a lift near our windows, which started opperating at 8am on Saturday and Sunday morning! Unfortunately my wife was taken ill on our arrival in Scotland, and was not well enough to take breakfast in the dinning room,I asked for some dry toast and tea to be sent to her in our room and was charged £6.30, despite having paid for a breakfast in the room charge. On a positive note, the food and service were exceptionally good and I am sure that once all of the refurbishment work is complete, the "Caley" will live up to its previously earnt reputation. Regretfully for us this was not a weekend to remember.
Fantastic !

Stayed overnight at the Caledonian on business. I noticed from the Hilton website they have both refurbished contemporary rooms and more traditional. I went for the refurbished, absolutely spot on. Room service and breakfast were great too. Would stay here again any time, location is excellent too.
I stayed her for 2 nights over Easter and was very impressed. The location of the hotel was ideal to explore Edinburgh and was in walking distance to most of the major attractions! I found the room to be delightful with traditional décor, very high ceilings, comfortable... more
