I stayed at Tailors Hall during the Hallowe'en weekend this year with my sister. We had originally booked Ellersly House Hotel but were contacted the day before we were due to travel to say that the hotel had unexpectedly had to close. We were therefore offered Tailors Hall... more

The hotel looks an impressive old building from the outside with a very nice courtyard. The location is excellent. The check in was quick and the staff very friendly. The room was fine - a good size and clean. The pub attached was very good - although therein lies the... more

Noise!!!
Reasonable location for the Royal Mile, however I wish I had read the reviews prior to booking! This Hotel is attached to a night club! On arrival found that our room smelt like something had died in it. Asked for another room and were offered a room on the first floor, we could hear the band playing in the night club as clear as if we were standing on the dance floor. However it was the smell of death or the noise, we choose the noise because at least it finished at 0300 or so we thought! Once the band stopped we could hear the air conditioning units outside our window competing to see which one could make the loudest clatter. Night 2 - moved back to our first room, the smell had gone - sleep disturbed all night by the boiler room intake fans spinning away below! Service was OK and breakfast average, it was however served in gloomy bar that was not really suited for the purpose and had little ambience or appeal. The whole place seemed slightly shabby!
Not recommended for anyone over the age of 25
I stayed here recently as part of a tour of Scotland. The location isn't bad as it's a short walk to the Royal Mile, Princes Street, and other sites in Edinburgh. However, it is home to a popular pub, the Three Sisters, which gets very loud in the wee hours. I knew this in advance and was warned about how popular it is with bachelor/bachelorette parties (aka hen and stag parties), but figured since I was there on a Tuesday, no one would be out too late. I was sadly mistaken and heard lots of yelling and music until 3am. If I was in my early 20s, I'm sure I would have been downstairs whooping it up with the revelers, but now that I'm in my 30s, I just want a good night's rest. I was in a room near the elevator, so I also got to hear lots of drunk people stumbling back to their rooms. The other problem with this hotel was the cleanliness factor. The mold in the bathroom was absolutely disgusting! (See photo of the ceiling above the shower.) This wasn't a tiny bit of mold - it was all over the bathroom ceiling. I don't know how the cleaning staff couldn't see it and just spray some Tilex over it! I should have complained to the staff, but I was tired and in the middle of a tour, so I dealt with it for two days. But it made me seriously wonder how clean the rest of the room was! I spoke to others on my tour and their rooms were clean, so maybe it doesn't affect the entire hotel. There's no AC in the rooms. Edinburgh doesn't get too warm but it is rainy, making it humid. You may want to consider another hotel if AC is important to you. The staff was pleasant and the Scottish breakfast was good and filling. The pub is quite large and a fun venue, but you can hear the noise from many of the rooms. I'd recommend this hotel if you're young and just want a place to crash, as it is near quite a few popular bars and clubs. If you're older and want a clean place and a good night's rest, try the Radisson. I stayed there at the end of my trip and it was a world of difference!
Under staffed and very noisy
The hotel is definitely in the budget category. The staff was very friendly, but definitely lacking in numbers and we had to ask daily for bars of soap and the correct number of bath towels as we had three people registered in the room. The "Three Sisters" nightclub has an extensive outside "Beer Garden" that is in operation most nights of the week until well after mid-night with blaring music and a large video screen. The noise from the music and people makes sleeping almost impossible. The scene looks like a disaster area the next morning before a power washer removes the remenants of the previous night. Do not recommend hotel for anyone wishing a restful night's sleep much before 12:00-1:00 a.m.
Cleanliness is dire here.
A two night stay in the hotel enabled us to enjoy three days in this wonderful city and a desire to return (but not to this hotel). Prior to booking we were aware of the potential for noise and merriment, but experienced no disturbance. The lift was out of order prior to arrival and remained so. This was revealed after checking in and necessitated a trek, with luggage, to the third floor: exploring areas of the staircases which, I'm sure, management would prefer guests not to see. Cleanliness is dire here; not just shabby and worn but inexcusable. Bathroom grotty in area of taps, tile grout, shower curtain, wood facing of bath and behind door. Carpet in reception is beyond redemption and a good indication of cleaning standards. Staff were cheerful and welcoming and superior to the hotel fabric which does not justify a charge of £186 for two nights B&B.
Not for me
Okay,if you want to party and are not particular about comfort. I don't know which rooms they used for the pictures but not ours. We booked late and saw 3 stars. Room not clean on second glance, beds uncomfortable, couldn't see out the two windows. Location was good once you found it.
Run in the Opposite Direction
One of, if not the worst, hotel I've ever stayed in - and we paid over $100 for the room. It was very dirty - the floor had probably not been vacuumed for the last few guests and the bathroom definitely the dirtiest I've ever seen in a hotel. The bottom two feet of the shower curtain was completely covered in mold. The corners of the bathtub and on tiles throughout the bathroom were covered in mold as well. The street was very loud and prevented us from going to sleep until after 2AM.
Not for the elderly or married.
12 of us stayed for a weekend and we loved this place. It has great nightlife about it and is in a very central location. It you are out for a bit of fun and a few drinks then this is the place to go. If you plan on being dull, unfriendly and generally sober then avoid it at all costs, - as dull, unfriendly, sober people actually do - which is why everyone there seems so lively and outgoing. Staff were friendly and helpful and all round great - espically the cute girl who looked a bit like Kirsten Dunst, - she, was, gorgeous. I honnestly can't say a bad thing about this place. Its not fancy or elegant or posh, its just a nice 3 star hotel with a good atmosphere. Loved it and defiantly going back this year. Its worth mentioning again that she was gorgeous - with theese lovely big puppy dog eyes - cute, as, buttons. To summise; Great. -Go here!
grubby and unfriendly
we stayed at this hotel 15/02/05-17/02/05, after reading some of the reviews for this hotel, we decided to go ahead and book, there seemed to be half &half for good & bad. all I can say is, the people who wrote the good reviews must be easily pleased! The place is in a very industrial grubby looking street. The room was cell like small, creaky, uncomfortable beds, the bathroom was like a sauna and the room was freezing. The one member of staff on duty in the breakfast room first morning boardered on sulky to rude, I could go on about this place but it puts me in bad form talking about it. I have travelled all over the world and this hotel ranks in the four worst hotels I have stayed in, making two of them in Edinburgh. Two very unhappy TRAVELLERS
