A Brilliant Hotel
Stayed in standard twin with good mate for Scotland versus Wales rugby weekend. From a really friendly welcome things just got better. Room was very clean, warm and modern. Breakfasts were great, as much fresh fruit as you could eat and great eggs benedict. Food in Brasserie was so good first night that we ate there the second night. Extensive wine list with large choice of wines by the glass. Location is away from city centre but we walked once and took a taxi (£10) back. But lots of good restaurants right next door. All in all a great hotel. And Scotland beat Wales. A great weekend. Have booked to go back in March for Scotland Ireland.
A beautiful building but......
We have just returned from a weekend at the Malmaison. We arrived on the Friday and were greeted by a very friendly receptionist. I have to say - the receptionists all weekend were fantastic. We paid slightly more to stay in a 'room with a view'. and it was worth it had it not been raining the whole time!!! The room was incredibly dark - so dark in fact that i couldn't get dressed and see what i was wearing properly. so i'd advise to get dressed etc in the bathroom. The first night the fire alarm broke so we were awoken with loud ringing at 1am! The breakfast was fantastic - although i was quite shocked that it cost £15 for porridge, and a buffet - and as the price of the room was relatively expensive, this did put me off a bit. Saturday night - we wanted a drink after we had gone out for dinner and i have never been spoken to so rudely by the bar manager - clearly she couldn't cope with it being busy - we did mention this to the receptionist the next day who couldn't have been more helpful. The only reason why we stayed at the malmaison was because it was the rugby and we couldn't stay anywhere else and in fact i wouldn't stay there again - it's a 20 min drive to edinburgh - although the buses are very good and you feel like you're staying quite far out. The staff were lovely (apart from the bar manager) and the room was great and the shower was amazing! so all in all - it was fine. hence the 'average' review. Hope this helps!
Very pleased
Very nice hotel in a lovely old building. Reception staff were polite, friendly and very helpful. Room was spacious with a big double bed, hi fi, tv (with sky sports) and free broadband internet access. The bathhroom was very clean and looked quite new. Breakfast was not amazing, but still nice.
Watch your bill
OK, but in comparison with expectations, really quite disappointing. Booked a room via Tripadvisor and got a good rate of £75 exclusive. Room was OK, clean, but small and curtains were hanging off the rails. Wake up feature on telephone was broken. NO aircon. Room was cold and only source of heat was thermostatic electric fire, which took ages to heat up. Bed was only half made. Corridor had an invisble slope half way along and with no warning sign it tripped me every time, exacerbating an already injured ankle. Food in Brasserie was very good, as was service, though menu was surprisingly limited. The full breakfast was 9/10 - not the best, but close. The lift is painfully slow and far too small. Gets overloaded at peak hours. On check-out, the receptioinst tried to charge me £10 over the agreed rate. When I questioned it, she then argued that I had signed a card on arrival which showed the higher rate - in fact I had signed a blank card, and they had filled in a higher rate afterward. It was only on presentation of my booking confirmation that this argument was conceded. Far from impresssive and an example of very unprofessional service - bad enough to get it wrong, but then to argue............need for retraining here. Overall, for £75 a night it's OK, if you can put up with the rather OTT pretentiousness and over-designed everything (come on guys, a milk jug in the shape of a milkbottle with the label "MALk" - this is surely utterly contrived). At normal rates - poor value. LOts better in Edinburgh, as the Tripadvisor tables show.
could do with a good spring clean
we visit edinburgh regularly as i am from edinburgh and have to stay in hotels as my parents cannot accomodate us all . we chose this because of location to be near some of the best restaurants, waterfront and because it was malmaison. the room was for a disabled person the washbasin being at knee height, the furniture was shabby and damaged. cleaning is not at the top of the list here tiles, bathand sink fronts had never seen a cloth for some time. ledges doors were whit with dust. the restaurant was lovely but the wine they call it a flush ( three glasses on rack of different wines) sent back as i dont like warm white wine. breakfast awful when it eventually came how hard is it to poach an egg and not burn toast even when sent back the first time! so its back to the Calley next time...............
Xmas at the mal
My Partner and Mum stayed at this property from Xmas Eve through to 27th Dec and really enjoyed it . We took advantage of the Xmas offer for only £50 a night Room only which meant that there was no maid service but clean towels and linen were provided. The hotel itself was very swish and very beautiful. We stayed in the cheaper rooms on the first floor and were very impressed with the speediness of room service and the staff were very polite. Xmas dinner was very good- a reasonable £65 a head. Our only concern really was the lack of heating in the room but that was quickly resolved with a missing key card arriving from reception to allow us our warm room! The water in the bath was discoloured - a dodgy yellow colour but in the room it stated this is leith's water colour!! very nice tubs in the rooms tho. Would recommend as enjoyed our stay- nice and central to bus stops to central edinburgh, Bus 35 runs from around the corner to and from the airport. Try Cruz bar ( a bar on a boat near the mal) and the granary restaurant nearby provided a nice cheaper alternative to the brasserie downstairs. Much nicer than the manchester mal, good sized rooms x
Fantastic Chic
This boutique style hotel is just such a classic chic. Situated in a 19th Century sailors mission that has been typically rebuilt, extended and refurbished to Malmaison's exacting standards. Located in the rapidly changing Leith waterfront district of Edinburgh, just a short walk from 'Brittania', moored alongside the waterfront shopping centre and the Scottish Executive headquarters. Everything about this place is first class and is one of our favourite hotels anywhere. The staff are just first rate, so friendly and helpful, the food is haute cuisine par excellance, and if you can afford the suites, do try them. We have now lost count of the number of times we have stayed here, but would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel. Just loved it.
Pleasant and professional
I read some recent reviews here after I already booked two rooms here, so I was a little reticent about staying here. But no worries, the place was fabulous. The staff was professional and helpful. Even though their brochure said a room service breakfast started at 7 AM, we were able to order four breakfasts for 5 AM, the morning of our flight. The rooms were very comfortable. The bathtubs fill up very quickly. The overall mood was relaxing and indulgent but low key. We stayed three nights and had a great time. The hotel is a short bus ride from the city center.
Disappointing!
We booked this hotel for a 2 night leisure stay through Malmaison's central reservation system and were really looking forward to it. When booking we requested a quiet room and also provisionally booked a table for two in the restaurant for our first evening. The hotel is relatively easy to find and nicely located at the waterfront, less than a 5 minute drive to the town centre. We even walked the distance once which took us 25 mins. Overall we had a rather mixed experience, somewhat stronger on the negative side. It seems there are serious communications problems between Malmaison's CRS and their hotels. One day before we arrived we were called by the hotel saying that they could not warrant our dinner booking which they had only just received even though we had made the booking weeks earlier. When we arrived at the hotel, staff seemed baffled by the call, saying there should be no problem to accommodate us in the restaurant. By then we had booked dinner elsewhere. The greatest disappointment was the room. Even though it was rather spacious, we felt the design a let down considering how boutique-style Malmaison advertise themselves. The room was nothing special. The real shock came the next morning when we were woken up by noise at around 7.30 am. We had requested a quiet room but had been given one facing a construction site! Unbelievable! We took it up with the staff but were told that our request was not received and were only given a lame excuse. Not what we would call good customer service. We had planned a nice ly-in but far from it. Service in the bar was also very slow. Considering the rate we paid I would say this was rather poor value for money. Not recommended.
