Clarendon Hotel

Recently back from our annual holiday, 8 days of which were spent at the Clarendon. Have travelled to many places around Europe (from Australia) in recent years and our Edinburgh stay rates as one of our more notorious accommodation experiences. To start with, our double room was very cramped, with barely enough room to get past the bed. Cases had to go on top of the wardrobe to make it manageable. I have just returned from a 2-night stay in the Clarendon Hotel. Having checked from the ratings guide of what one would expect from a 3 star Hotel, I was bitterly disappointed. The room had a window that did not close tight allowing a draft in on a cold night. Lucky the curtains were quite thick. The bathroom did not have an extractor fan or any visible signs of ventilation, which I am not entirely sure is legal, as it had not have any windows. There was no trouser press. We stayed at the Clarendon for 3 nights for 190.00 inc. breakfast. Compared to the other hotels in the centre of Edinburgh this was cheap and we got good value for money. The room was clean and the shower was good. The windows didnt open in our room but that didnt matter. There is a bar and a room where you can leave cases etc. on day of departure which was very handy! The staff were friendly enough. Hotel has no case racks. Room had no chair until one was requested. Shampoo comes in impossible to open sachets. Soap provided was minute. Some staff wre friendly and helpful. Paid over 100 UK Pounds per night during the Festival period. This hotel needs to improve.

This hotel is now called the Clarendon hotel, not the Maitland. I wrote a letter of complaint after I was disgusted by the treatment. Best thing is for you to read it more or less the same way I wrote it. We stayed here overnight in Jan 2005. Booked through laterooms and got a double with ensuite & Breakfast for 45 pounds. The room was spotless, heating good and the location off Princess Street hard to beat. The airport bus picks you up right outside the door. As we had to leave so early (5am) and wouldn't be there for the breakfast they offered us an earlier time. We declined as we couldn't stomach any food at that time anyway. I would definatley stay again.

this hotel i dont think should be classed as a 3 star it should be a 2..... we went the weekend before xmas, ok it is clean an tidy and in a reasonably good location but for winter it was extremely cold. the radiator (which was a plug in) was very very small and every time you left it on to heat up the room for coming back they came in an turned it off...... we complained an were told they had no more radiators......the bar/restuarant is a joke, for £80 per night i think we were well overcharged. would not stay here again!

Well I stayed before the renovations, but it was OK. And like someone else on here said you can get really good deals through websites like laterooms. I got a room for £40 a night which is not bad for a place in walking distance to all the major sites in Edinburgh (plus it has the airport transfer bus stopping outside!).
